Hashim Kedir was one of the victims. Just yesterday I was searching the internet to know the whereabouts of my university classmates 27 years ago, one of which was Hashim Kedir. I typed his name in Google search and found his name in a newspaper. At first I had no idea how he could be in the news. As I read on, I was shocked when I learned his death in the Grenfell Tower fire. I learned about the death of one of my most memorable persons five years after his death! I just can’t express my deep sadness! He was my classmate for five years. Whenever I remembered my university freshman year 30 years ago, I always remembered Hashim Kedir.

People saying "5 years, get over it" are crazy. I live in Sweden and I cannot even get over it. I wasn't even there.
I watched everything unfold during the night from my home in Stockholm. I have been to London and seen Grenfell after the fact. And I cannot stop thinking about it.
I cannot imagine been burnt alive, or losing someone there, or been there and managed to escape, or witnessed it live and trying to help people, the helplessness and heartbreaking witness statements from fire brigade, the aftermath with all the homeless. The constant cold hands from authorities, noone taking responsibility of the refurbishment, the countless houses that still to this day have this cladding.
EVERYONE should be upset. Everyone should still care.

I lived around West London and had around 3 friends that lived in Grenfell. When the fire began they survived which was probably because they lived on the 2nd floor. But their own friends that lived on the 11th floor survived and they said every night they remember the screams of people and running down the emergency stairwell. I pray for the families of the victims.

Corporate greed, flouting regulations, and the immediate authorities ultimately telling the victims to "shelter in place" while the ship was slipping beneath the waves. Almost all of the survivors defied the authorities' advice and got the hell out. For the love of God don't listen to the people in charge when your life is on the line, make your own judgement and if what you are told feels wrong, trust in yourself and protect yourself! That is the lesson to take away from these tragedies; no one is coming to save you. The fat suits will mourn and apologize for doing and/or saying the wrong thing. We need to rethink how we view people who live in these towers or in social housing. We need to make sure it never happens again, and only if we keep those who died in our memories and make sure our politicians know that it is a universal belief in this country that all people, of whatever background, religion or "status" deserve safe housing. Where the law doesn't go far enough then it needs to go further and change. Tenants need to be able to trust in an accountable and fair system where their complaints can be heard; preferably in public. The pursuit of profit must never be placed before human lives.

Whenever I see any videos about Grenfell fire, I get such a not in my throat. I've watched a few documentaries and other videos of people who recorded with their cell phones, and it's still heartbreaking to watch. 6 years now, and authorities in London still have not started removing cladding on many other buildings. Why do people take so long to do the most obvious, save lives. Prevent another Grenfell fire. Fire took 18 minutes to go from the 4th floor to the 23rd floor. That is incredibly fast, and this same cladding was also on the Tower in Dubai fire on New Years Eve a few years back, which also burned and traveled up the building very quickly. How in Gods name is this cladding still permitted to be put on buildings.

    • @You-fools

In a typical tower block fires do not spread like that, because of the horrible regulations allowing for a single stairway for the entire building and the cost cutting to install highly flammable outer cladding the fire shot up, out and around the entire building rapidly. Staying put is completely reasonable and in most cases the safest option when fires start in apartments as you are risking smoke inhalation and crush in stairways as people rush to evacuate, creating more issues than simply staying put and letting the fire department reach and fight the fire.
The fire brigade had no idea that the building was wrapped in essentially a chimney lined with gasoline.

Is that the fault of the builder, the government or the people who were too lazy to take items too large for the rubbish chute down to the ground floor themselves? Was it the builder's fault as he only built one set of stairs? Or was it the architect? If you want to blame a government, blame Labour. The building was opened to tenants while they were in Downing Street. Who broke the lock on the dry riser cupboard that firemen fit the hoses to? Was that the government, the builder or local dickheads? Who vandalised smoke alarms in common areas like hallways from the stairs to the front doors of the flats so they never had to leave their floor to smoke their products? Was that the builder or the government? Who parked their vehicles on the yellow criss-cross lines reserved for the emergency services? Was that the government or the builder? Having no fire extinguisher in a flat. Is that the fault of the builder or the government? The cladding itself was supposed to be safer. When it was replaced in the refurbishment the metal used had a higher melting point. That was an improvement, but the design was wrong as it never fully encased the interior flammable material. That is not the fault of the government, It is the fault of the building inspector who declared it safe. Nobody knows who he/she is. Why not?.If you go right back to the start, why did the tenant run for it with his neighbour? He opened the window for what purpose? It was a small fire visible from the front door, which he left open when he hopped it. This is in his police statement. He was too lazy to get rid of a non-working fridge, and said could not reach the socket to get the plug out. So he ran an extension cable from hos living room right along the hall and into his kitchen. He plugged in the fridge, the microwave and the kettle. It overheated and caught fire. How is any of that the fault of the builder or the government? Was he prosecuted for having illegal 'tenants' sleeping on his living room floor? It took three police interviews for him to reveal these facts as the first one was no good as he struggles with English. So the police had to get a translator in for the next two interviews. And finally, I have dodgy legs, but there is no chance whatsoever of me staying in a building that is on fire, even if the order came from the Prime Minister. I would get myself out somehow. If my legs were okay I'd have probably grabbed a child and took it with me. Not heroic at all, just sensible.

There is only ONE person responsible for the spread of the fire. That is the ONE person who signed that the cladding was safe. The outer casing replacement used in the refurbishment had a higher melting point than the cladding taken down. Therefore it was 'safer' than what was originally used. From what I understand the fault lied in the manufacturing procedure. It left a gap that never covered 100% of the interior material, and that was highly combustible.

No, you can't blame the living arrangements after a fire for your divorce. I went through somthing similar except with SEVEN family members in one hotel room for a year and my wife and I are still going strong.

Maybe y’all are just Trauma bonded, healthy grief & recovery from traumatic experiences can be very different for many & people change, sometimes permanently due to the new normal of their lives. Sometimes it’s for the better, a living circumstance can really be hell of heaven depending on what you emotionally need. Some people need to pick back up and not be stuck in a mid way station and i can understand that this may be bad for ones healing and all this can result in these breaks..
for someone that’s married you clearly don’t have a big comprehension of how people and love work.

Stay put advice is stupid that's what killed most of the people

    • @You-fools
      @You-fools Рік тому

the stay put advice is great in a building not covered in highly flammable cladding. The risk is significantly higher if everyone rushes down the single fire escape stairway, breathes in smoke or trample each-other in a panic. What killed most people was the council cutting corners and costs by installing a slightly cheaper cladding on the building that was known to be incredibly dangerous in a fire.

@@You-fools I agree if the building wasn't fully involved like this one was however in this case making people stay in the building is what killed a lot of them
