    Cool...I thought I saw it move back like on the second hit...but I agree with the guy who suggested a long pipe....

    That is awesome, I have two mowers, one has a bent crankshaft and I bought another one because I didn't know how to fix it so I just kept it for a backup. Now I'm going to fix it myself.

    I ran over a half buried piece of metal from some kind of a tray it's amazing when you try to mow a property or litterbugs just dumped all kinds of junk that spread everywhere and how many people out there don't know the concept of a trash can because I also ran over some half buried yarn it was a yarn ball and that literally broke the mower. So when I tried to start the mower it sounded like a machine gun and it vibrated so loud I thought it was going to explode or something. I'm going to try this method and see if it helps thank you! Because of the economy now a lawn mower cost $200 even $300 for the cheapest mower but Walmart used to have them for $120 for a nice sized small mower. Now it's double in price so this will help hopefully.

      Did you think the mower was going to pull its own cord and start itself? Insane thing to be scared of.

    • @jasexavier
      @jasexavier 8 місяців тому +2

      @@Blueshirt38Spinning the blade by hand is exactly the same as pulling the cord. For a well tuned mower the only thing that is keeping it from starting is the safety switch. Popping the spark plug wire off is cheap and easy insurance, especially if you're going to do it later in the process anyway.

    • @Blueshirt38
      @Blueshirt38 8 місяців тому

      @@jasexavier Gosh, if only mowers came equipped with some sort of dead-man's-switch style mechanism that would stop the ignition coil from sending a spark to the combustion chamber when not held down... Oh well, I guess we don't live in that world, so we should all live in a constant state of fear that a strong gust of wind may start up our lawn death machines on a rampage.

    • @jasexavier
      @jasexavier 8 місяців тому +2

      @@Blueshirt38 As I said, the only thing keeping it from starting is the safety switch. Like the safety on a firearm, they are useful, but they can and do fail. Also, older mowers don't have them, and some people deliberately bypass them. In any of those cases it's possible to start a mower by rotating the blades by hand.
      The safety switch also keeps it from starting when you pull the cord, so by your logic, there's no need to disconnect the spark plug for that part either.
      Or, take the maximum 5 seconds it takes to make sure it can't start.

    Always remove the spark plug before doing any maintenance on the underside of any mower. It makes a mechanical accident impossible. If the clamp bar connection on the mower were to malfunction and keep the plug ‘hot’, you can start a mower by simply moving the blades. Think of old movies where the guy yelled “contact!” And manually started the propeller of an airplane, mowers work identical to this. Safety first. This is how people lose fingers from trying to work on a mower

    • @floodgates6210
      @floodgates6210 7 місяців тому

      The clamp bar does not only keep the spark plug disconnected but it also has a mechanical brake on the engine.

    I used to pound the sand outta my old mower’s crank when it bent but then discovered the more controlled method of using an eight foot pipe. Just tip the mower and strap it against a strong fence, take the propeller off, put the pipe over the crankshaft and start yarding on it.

    Another website I just watched recommended using a long pipe for this job. Banging on the shaft risks doing internal and fatal damage to the engine. The bent shaft issue could be avoided the first place if the blade was held on the shaft with shear bolts.

      There's no compression with the spark plug is out so you can turn the shaft around easier when you pull the rope.

    Im not making fun of you...but you say that metal is funny like that cause It'll bounce right back? Funny thing about aluminum, it doesn't really 'bounce' at all.... if you hut that output shaft too hard, you're liable to crack the bottom end of the motor...just always mind a bit of finess when doing these types of repairs brother. Great video though!
