The Ophiophagus hannah, or king cobra, is considered cannibalistic because it often preys on other snakes, including its own species. This behavior actually benefits the ecosystem by helping to regulate the population of other snakes, preventing overpopulation and maintaining balance in the food chain. By controlling the number of other predator species, such as venomous snakes, the king cobra indirectly supports the stability of the ecosystem and reduces competition for food. This top-level predation helps maintain biodiversity and the overall health of its habitat. Update* its taxonomic name has been changed to Ophiophagus bungarus from Ophiophagus hannah
In fact, if there were no *Ophiophagus hannah* or king cobras, the snake population in the ecosystem would overpopulate. They exist to control the number of snakes, and that’s part of the natural law.
