To Katie N, you saying "freedom to explore" made me flinch. I've just finished reading through one of the manifestos, and their use of that phrase is extremely anxiety inducing. Why?:
They attach it to the back end of a pledge to ban conversion therapy, including for trans people. Specifically, "implement a gender-inclusive ban on conversion therapy, while providing the freedom to explore their sexuality or gender." That *while* does some concerning lifting, especially in the context of a ban. How it reads to me, the only way I *can* read it, is that they wish to write the ban in such a way that a loophole exists for "exploratory" therapy. For any *not* in the know, exploratory therapy is just, effectively, a rebranding of conversion therapies to avoid the stigma "conversion therapy" has now. It's a very ominous sounding pledge, couched in language that otherwise sounds like a good thing. It honestly sounds like a ban that won't actually ban.
That "while" could easily be read as an 'and' but no, using it like that is more in line with 'however', or 'but' - it's conversion therapy ban with a caveat.
