I use just the same materials he uses. You can you use, Staedler pencils, since B till 9 B and Koh-I-Noor Hardtmuth "Giocaonda"-Black- to give even darker shadows. Hope I helped a little. Hug, Hercules .
Delacroix is also a painter that paints more than draws, his painting are not what reality is exactly supposed to look like. If you want a very close image of what Chopin must have looked like by Delacroix you should go see his Chopin as Dante drawing
