  • A typical weekend in my home garage. Just showing what kind of stuff REALLY comes in for me to diagnose, how I "operate", and I don't edit out the "frustrations" you usually don't see me deal with.
    It's usually not as exciting as what I normally make videos on, but it's still pretty fun.

    Lol, I remember watching that disgruntled mechanic video with the tire changer. Looking forward to the parasitic draw video! Thanks for sharing.

    Sometimes it takes days for a bright idea, even by the sharpest of wrenchers, it is part of the process of elimination. Sometimes you run into a real head scratcher.

    Those Sienna's can be a big pain in the arse for serviceability for a lot of things around the engine bay area. Lately, I've been working on a few of those vans for the late model ones like 2015s 2016s ish. I have yet still to replace a tensioner assembly on one of them soon at some point. The labour time pays very close to 5 hours for those ones. Not too fun of a job, but it pays decent. Great work as usual Matt! I started laughing when you said 50 dollars for a tensioner because I know those vans quite well by now. 😂I don't know if they just sell a pulley by themselves, but the tensioners cost are an arm and a leg normally.

      @SchrodingersBox  8 місяців тому +1

      Yeah I have never seen one of these before- I definitely underestimated that stupid pulley hahahaha. I tried everything but I can’t get just the tensioner pulley. it’s not interchangeable with the idler pulley even though they look almost identical.
      oh well. sometimes you catch a break but this time I didn’t.

    • @moosemobileautorepair

      @SchrodingersBox LOL 😆 we all have to live and learn someday. It's best to replace the entire tensioner anyways. Replacing just the pulley will probably be a short term repair, but I understand not everybody has the money to fix their vehicles 100%. Thanks for the video content. Wished you posted more often, but I understand it's not your day job. It's great seeing what's going on. I appreciate your work. How is the weather in Colorado these days? Did you guys get much snow lately? We finally got some bits of snow here in Canada 🇨🇦 Ontario GTA area here.

      I sometimes like to check Identifix or All Data to see what I'm dealing with for labour times when it comes to such things. Those things I always try to be super careful. Sometimes adding some labour time for some older and rusted vehicles is necessary too on top of the standard times.

    LOL! Massive cold at -13?! In Edmonton, Alberta is now -37C at 11am and it's been so for a few days. Because I didn't install a remote starter on my Volvo, I have to go and start it every 3-4 hours, but not overnight, I am already like a zombie!

    Old cars can suddenly shut down! I'm the one who does emergency auto-opening 😎. Of course, I don’t need any extra fuss, and I also leave the window open. Finding a parasite using an infrared camera is 🔥, but many beginners do not have that many tools and another solution is an infrared thermometer, since papasite is known to cause heating and the thermometer shows the temperature, which can be used to determine the approximate location of the parasite.
    Thank you! for the educational video 👨🏻‍🔧

    Hello! Thanks for all you do. I'm having some trouble with the window switch on a 2004 Cadillac Escalade EXT. The circuit for the switch isn't always getting energized. Do you have a video that goes through the diagnostic process for a window switch?

    • @SchrodingersBox
      @SchrodingersBox  8 місяців тому

      I do but I don’t recall which one hahahaha. Are you saying it isn’t energized from the fuse? Or at the motor? Modern window switches are controlled from the BCM- it’s not like the switch on the door handles 12V power to the window motor.
      Normally I diagnose this using the scan tool connected to the BCM and see the inputs but if you don’t have a scantool it’s easiest to just remove the switch from the door and check it to see if it has continuity and see if bypassing it works which will tell you whether the issue is with the switch or not.

    • @Thurge
      @Thurge 8 місяців тому

      @@SchrodingersBox Okay here's what is happening. The switch has illumination. When it is working it's illuminated and when it is not, it isn't. There is also a set of controls for the seat heater that aren't working as well. My gut tells me there is either an open somewhere in the wiring harness for that door or there is some component that is failing. At one point if I put the ignition in the ACC position it would power up the door switch and then after starting the car that particular circuit would lose power (which could point to an issue with the battery or charging system, I believe.) While I'm driving it flickers on and off which I believe points to a bad wire or perhaps a faulty component. I guess the easiest thing to do would be to buy a switch see if that fixes the problem and return it if it doesn't. I know that you are not a fan of throwing parts at a problem (and neither am I!) but it's a quick way to see if it's just a bad switch or not. After writing all that I remembered that if I leave the radio on for too long the car will require a jump start. I had the battery tested and the result was good battery and good alternator. Maybe a loose connection in the charging system? I'll look up how to bypass and perform the continuity tests as soon as I can make time. Thanks for the input, you are appreciated my friend!

    • @Thurge
      @Thurge 8 місяців тому

      Update: I went to O'Reilly's and asked if I could test the switch before buying it. The lady at the parts counter said I'd have to buy it first. I asked what is your return policy? She replied if it doesn't work bring it back. I said isn't that the same thing? She then gave me the part and asked to hold my DL. I tried it and it worked. I gave it back to her said it didn't do the job. Went outside and ordered it on Amazon for $100 less. LOL.

    • @Thurge
      @Thurge 7 місяців тому

      So it turns out there is a broken wire in the harness of the door. The new switch was a band-aid for a few weeks but the ultimate problem is a broken wire. Do you have a video on removing the wiring harness for the door? I know I need to test continuity on the wires then trace for the broken part by rubbing the wire but I assume I need to remove the harness to do that, don't I?
