7 Times You Had to Die for Important Reasons, Sorry

- Spoilers ahead for several games (but nothing newer than 2013). You spend most of your time in videogames trying not to die, then occasionally you hack your way through a thousand goons to reach the bit where, it turns out, your death is unavoidable. But there is plenty of difference between losing your last health point to the 831st henchman and going down in a scripted blaze of glory, and it's not just whether or not you get to respawn. Consider these seven times your canonical death was necessary for important reasons, sorry.
Sometimes the reason your death is required is as simple as continuity, such as in Halo: Reach, where you buying the farm is a fixed plot point, necessary for lining the story up with that of Halo: Combat Evolved, for which it is a prequel. The inevitability of Noble Six eventually getting a Covenant energy sword in his or her throat makes their death all the more poignant.
Other times, your mandatory death as player character is an essential part of a game's narrative payoff, for the sake of karmic balance or in keeping with serious themes. According to Old West justice and cowboy genre convention, John Marston must die in Red Dead Redemption to be red dead redeemed.
Call of Duty's Modern Warfare sub-franchise, on the other hand, turned killing off player characters into a go-to story device, to the point where three out of five of the playable guys die in surprise twists partway through the game. It's easy to forget the impact it had back in the first Modern Warfare, when it was fresh and surprising. Who can forget the sorry fate of Sgt. Paul Jackon atop a mound of irradiated rubble and flaming helicopter parts?

Reach was one of my favorite stories because of how sad it is. No matter how hard you try, no matter how many ships you explode, a hundred more are waiting. You can't save them all.
+AlexRed95 plus it had probably the best story (in my opinion so dont send a militia to my door) i mean you fight through hordes of covenant only for the whole team to slowly die off one by one until its your turn where as you dont just jump feet first into hell you make sure its crowded when you get there

I completely agree and love the story and the ending is fitting for the rest of the game, I loved how awesome the last scenes for the noble squad people were. cats death was really sad though:( but did you know that it is the arbiter that finishes you off. he is the only elite that holds an energy sword in his left hand, at the end you see an energy sword at his left side so either he was looking the wrong way or it was the arbiter

i think i needed more time to actually developed a feeling for noble six and noble squad i think it would of needed more story behind the squad because i didn't have enough time to develope a feeling to the character like Gta 4 gives you time to get to know the characters

The point was, he wanted to die because thats the only way his family would be rid of the troubles. He was sacrificing himself for his family. had he won this battle, his family would never know peace. His death was his redemption
Remember guys, Chief wasn't the last Spartan in Halo 1, Linda was in cryo, Kelly and Fred were still alive, Jun from Reach is still alive, a number of Spartan III's made it out and eventually joined the Spartan IV program as either instructors or part of the squads.
Chris Lagann Jun was killed in an explosion. It wasn't shown in-game though.

Lunardivider24 here is my solution, read the books. They are DAMN good and are easy reads. You can find the pocket sized version for like 10 dollars.
I call shenanigans on Red Dead Redemption, John died for no reason other than the Marshals' corruption and straight up duplicity. Nothing "important" about it, it was an empty death that ruined the game for me. What's the point of continuing a game once the main hero dies? Even if the kid wasn't annoying, you're so attached to John that the player is inevitably going to hate the little bastard no matter what.
While it also ruined the game for me and had me throwing my controler as if id lost an actual family member it added to the over all ending of the game...u could tell something was gonna happen...just didnt expect it to go down the way it did.
Although playing as Jack was the most horrid thing ever, Getting revenge for your fathers death was extremely satisfying.
Is why everyone hated Connor Kenway (other than he was a boring little shit), he carried on from Ezio who you played as for three games and he just simply vanished.

I dunno though, if I was the writer I'd have it end on that mission, go out in a blaze of glory, then switch to the son as he's narrating it to his own kids, swearing revenge. Yeah it'd be ending on a cliffhanger, but it'd be less insulting to the audience than what they did, and we'd get to play as Jack for the next installment, or even just an expansion, similar to the zombie one.
calvaughan27 Exactly! But even that was in a new game, this is in the same one, many hours in. It'd be like if in GTA4, Niko died 3/4 of the way in, and you had to play as Niko and Kate's future kid from then on.

And in ME 3 you have to die again to finish the game (except in only 1 fucking ending that you cant achieve unless you play online or buy ALL the dlc and following a walkthroug). Poor shepard, he/she has a though life

robotguy i don't really know how many people liked desmond but personally i feel bad for him, because the games f*ck him over really hard and then top the whole experience off with killing him. it was like one big middle finger to the guy.

If you actually bothered to know all of the content in the halo universe, you'd know that the chief wasn't the last spartan at the point where halo 1 begins. There were many spartan II's and spartan III's that survived past halo 1. In fact, a few spartan II's and III's survived even past the end of the covenant-human war. I've lost count of the amount of spartan twos and threes you encounter in the books that were all alive after the beginning of halo 1. Some died but many survived past the end of the covenant-human war and are still active in the unsc.

I'm pretty sure the games only followed the book story line for the first Halo. I'm not even sure if reach was that accurate.
What happened to UA-cam reach was not acurate at all. for one the pillar of autum was not on planet when it was fitted for it's mission...and it was heading out of system when reach was attacked and called back to help.
master cheif had a mission in space (so the pillar did not land at any point...and i believe is stated in the books and maybe the first game that it can not) and was not put in a cryo tube on the flight deck.
halsey did not know about the spartan III's untill after the events in halo 1...possably halo 2 (don't remember the exact time line). and speaking of the s III's...there was several classes (three if i remember right), they were cheap and disposable.
first class only two survivors (if you can call them that), second not a single survivor, and third there was three teams (one team dead, one in a stasis of sorts) on onix when the events were set in motion that changed the planet.
also if you read the books there are actualy several surviving spartans (both II's and III's), and the status of the rest of the third class of III's is unknown.
they are talking about important VIDEO GAME deaths. The books are a separate reality than the games. In the game universe the chief is the only spartan ever mentioned and it is often alluded that he is the only one left. the books don't matter if you are discussing the video games on a video game channel
Commander Shepard could have been given a mention as well, since the whole plot of Mass Effect 2 revolves around their death at the beginning and Cerberus reviving them then sending them across the galaxy to do the rest of the game. Not to mention the final game wouldn't have even come close to playing out the way it did if Shepard hadn't "died" previously.

Halo reach was a great game I loved it. I believe it was very well done and a great way for Bungie to say Goodbye to the Halo Franchise

eh, she didn't have too exactly that was just sort of a side effect from here going to a timeline where she had already lived and died. it collapsed her position as a fact and changed it to a probability making her vulnarable.

was gonna say. Call of Duty deaths shouldn't count. they kept killing off characters as a "surprise twist", but after the first time, it lost all of it's effect. Now the characters are just hard to give a shit about because we know they're just gonna die randomly at some point. In fact any campaign mode in that series is now meaningless.

Kaidos Motthasmews I still don't even understand how CoD deaths even happen at the end. Last I checked your practically immune to all bullets and can just hide behind a chest hi-wall to regenerate. So the logic of "gets shots then dies at the end" makes zero sense to me.
GANTZ100pts yeah. I've never been a fan of the playable character dying during cut scenes in any game. it's like you can be so good at the game and feel invincible, then you're helpless the second you lose control.

Agreed. It was most felt in cod4 when gaz, Briggs and the others died, in mw2 when ghost and Roach died, and then soap and yuri in mw3. Ever since, its become overused and bland.
I wanna see a COD Campaign without:
-Stealth Mission
-Being captured by enemies
-Characters dying suddenly
-Switching your team (for example in ghosts you switch from Stalkers to Ghosts, AW from Marines to Atlas etc.)
i still think it was crap how they killed off Desmond. what was worse is how they did it. he didn't go out in a blaze of glory, as the most badass of badasses taking out the evil villain in a climactic duel to the death and giving his life to save everyone in existence. instead he dies from touching a fucking orb that makes him into a humanized baked ziti. maybe it would have been easier to accept his death if he at least went out in the mother of all heroic sacrifices instead of the anticlimactic bullshit we were fed. it was such bullshit it killed my interest in the series and i LOVED assassins creed but now i don't even care about the games anymore. truly a bullshit ending for a guy hyped up so much.
MrHornyboy2000 I do agree but in a sense it was a heroic sacrifice since he does it save the world from a catastrophic event that whipped out the first civilization (That they stupidly based on that dumb 2012 theory)They also killed him off to add a sense of immersion with the new nameless faceless person in the games being you as the player.
I agree they should given him a better death through or at least kept him around until the very end of AC

If you play AC IV and wonder around the Abstergo Building where Sean and that girl, who are undercover and working there, Desmond does come into play as he reveals hidden truths about Abstergo and the Subjects before him. You also play within his blood line as Abstergo took his DNA and implanted it into the new animus. So Desmond's death was actually not useless.
thomas brady i think it would have been cool to have a modern day assassins creed where you could have played as Desmond solely and actually used the training he gained.
+MrHornyboy2000 That is where Watch_Dogs come in. Pierce may not be an assassin but he is very similar to one as he is a vigilante. During this time, Pierce is in the same time as Abstergo and actually assassinates the CEO of Abstergo as Blume and ctOS were making ties with Abstergo.

I know the ending to Infinite doesn't make 100% sense, but I absolutely love it. It breaks my heart every time, but is beyond satisfying.
Indinite fell flat when you consider the fact that the developers tried to do the multiverse theory thing without completelyunderstanding how a multiverse works. For every possible variation of everything in existence, theres another universe in which that variation occurs. For instance, theres a universe where instead of pancakes that mornign i had cereal, or a universe where everything is exactly 1 atom to the left. Thus, even though the elizabeths kill tons of bookers, they simply create even more alternate universes in which they dont. There arent hundreds or even thousands of comstocks or booker dewitts, there is an infitie number of them. Not to mention the universes where booker never fought at wounded knee or died at wounded knee and so on and so forth. Elizabeth wanted to free all universes of comstocks, yet failed to comprehend the impossibility of such a thing, sane with the devs.

The one thing I didn't like is the implication that there was not ONE single universe where Comstock was a good person? Not one universe where he simply led out the rest of his life in peace without ever becoming involved with Columbia? Not one universe where he created Columbia and did good things with it? Not one where he isn't a hypocritical racist asshole? Or how about a universe where he stays Booker, but loves and raises his daughter, and strives to be a good father?
What about Elizabeth's irrational and out of character desire to kill off 'all the Comstocks'? She was very clearly hesitant to give Booker what he wanted at the end of the game, and she certainly didn't look like she enjoyed doing it or seeing it happen. Maybe she can somehow tie universes together when it comes to certain decisions, but you're right in stating that killing them all off would be completely impossible. Hell, what about universes where Booker doesn't even consider baptism? What if some of his incarnations LIKE what he did?
Infinite choices, infinite possibilities. Except not really. I'd like the universe where the devs didn't write pretentious drivel and instead showed some actual understanding of the concept of parallel universes and the true nature of infinity. Even simplifying parallel universe theory down to involving only human life choices, the number of possibilities for variation involve numbers so high that neither we, nor any organic or machine intelligence we could create could comprehend them.
Burial at sea just made it worse. Blech, what a bunch of garbage. At least Ken Levine isn't likely to return to the franchise ever again. Maybe someone less pretentious can make a game with a story that makes sense, or at least pays advanced existential theories more than the barest of lip service in an effort to sound intelligent or profound.
Rednecksith5 imho its best to stay away from attempts at the full blown multiverse theory for gaming, movies, etc. Deal with 1 or 2 parallel universes and your fine. Trying to do this? never works out.

Connor notyerbidness they did do that, post credits booker wakes up in his office to find his daughter in her crib, the idea was to stop THAT booker from becoming Comstock which would have been inevitable because he was a Booker that accepted the baptism (the trigger that makes Comstock)

Desmond Miles might be the greatest player character death of all time for me simply because of how much you experienced him over the years up until that point.
Just so you guys know Master Chief isn't the last SPARTAN-II. A few others such as Kelly, Linda, and Fred all survive the war. Also Noble Six and the rest of Noble Team (apart from Jorge) are all SPARTAN-IIIs which were cheaper 'more bang for your buck' SPARTANS created by the UNSC Army while SPARTAN-IIs were created by the Navy as true special forces.

Why did he have to die though? If there are multiple bookers and multiple comstocks, then wouldn't the only way to stop him be to go back in time before booker prime tried to get baptized and kill him then? Even if this booker was somehow the original booker, how does killing him now stop anything? That death seems more avoidable and kinda stupid the more I think about it.

I actually loved playing as Jack in Red Dead, in my second play through I did the story missions only so that I could do all the stranger missions as Jack so it gave him a story, at the end I remember I had more hours played as Jack than as John.

Murdered: Soul Suspect has you die about 10 min in, but since the whole point of the game is you're a ghost solving your own murder, you get to keep playing.
It takes upwards of 30 seconds to lose consciousness from lack of oxygen, even for someone that is out-of-shape.
Another one is the ending to Dragons Dogma. Because becoming an all powerful being becomes very boring after about 10 minutes.

Nolbe six is a SPARTAN-III whereas Master Chief (or John-117) was a SPARTAN-II (and most probably one of the few left). However, SPARTAN-IIIs were cheaper and easier to make than SPARTAN-IIs. The differences between them are the fact that SPARTAN-IIs are much taller than average people and didn't work as much in large masses. SPARTAN-IIIs on the other hand weren't so expensive and so didn't have all the fancy augments like SPARTAN-IIs. SPARTAN-IIIs were sent on suicide missions (sort of) in large quantities and none came back ,usually, unless they did come back, in which case they put into two man squads called "Headhunter" squads. However, not all SPARTAN-IIIs went on suicide missions and went on to become succesful SPARTAN-IIIs like Thom (the Noble Six before the one we all know and love) who became a member in NOBLE Team. Even though Noble Six & Master Chief are completely different (Master Chief's rank is Petty Officer Mater Chief whereas Noble Six's is leuitenant, AND Master Chief has almost all the medals except the prisoner of war medal (I still think he should've gotten that)) they're both Hyperlethal Supersoldiers, friends with a SPARTAN-II (Noble Six is friends with Jorge and John's friends with Linda-058) and both carried Cortana around. Another similarity is that they were both inducted into becomeing SPARTANs wwhen they were children, but that happened to all the SPARTANs and so it's not unknown. However, with SPARTAN-IVs, they're made up of volunteers, not abducted children (SPARTAN-IIs) or vengful orphans (SPARTAN-IIIs) and so aren't as military effective (they're still military effective but not as SPARTANs). The name of the rank is Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (E-9), the highest enlisted rank in the Navy equivalent in protocol to the rank of vice admiral. However, because his rank is non-commissioned, any commissioned officer (O-1 and higher) automatically outranks him (this now includes Frederic-104, as Kurt promoted him to Lieutenant Junior Grade [O-2] at the end of Ghosts of Onyx).

Halo: Reach will probably be my favorite story line having read the book before hand by the same name. Knowing they all die, but the did it so well. You watch each member die one by one to get everyone else further until the very end, where, as the fucking planet is getting glassed, you don't let those sacrifices go in vain as you fight till the last breath.
Gotta say, Booker's demise was an oddly satisfying ending to Bioshock: Infinite. Can't say the same for Elizabeth in the DLC.

No, you only die in one of the 4 multi colored endings. And since Bioware has opted to leave it to everyones imagination what happened, we can not truly say if Shepard died or not.

Don't know if this fits the criteria since it's more of a you choose your ending by living or dying thing, but my first thought for this list was Emil from Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World.
-Spoiler Alert-
The final confrontation of the game actually takes place after you defeat the main antagonist, when your character Emil goes into his berserk demon lord state and has to fight two of his party members. Whether or not you win the fight, it is discovered that he was in fact faking it the whole time in hopes that his party would kill him and revert him into his core state so he can seal the portal to the demonic realm. But if you end up beating the party he knocks out the girl he loves and, in the grieving belief that he's killed her, pulls a Romeo & Juliet move by running himself through with his sword. Thus to get the good ending of the game, you actually have to lose the final battle.
I still love how Gothic I actually ended with you surviving the final boss and your character telling that he left the colony, but in Gothic II you get resurrected after your death against the final boss and thus lose all your powers and skills as you are extremely weakened.

Drew Russell Duke's skip allows you to skip the entire necessary death part and allows you to entirely skip a huge section of the dukes archives. Lets speedrunners through the area easily and is simple as a few rolls, no game breaking glitches through walls or anything like that

Zack from FFVII: Crisis Core, his death was essential to Cloud's character and how he progressed in both the original FFVII and Advent Children.
Shepard from Mass Effect, his/her death was required in all but one of the 8 or so different endings of ME3 in order for the Reapers to be destroyed and the galaxy saved.
Starkiller in the LS ending of The Force Unleashed. His death allowed the rebels (most notably Mon Mothma and Bail Organa who were instrumental to events both in the movies and TV shows) to escape Darth Vader's clutches and live on to form the very Rebel Alliance which would some day tear down the Empire and free the galaxy from oppression.
Revan in the alternate DS ending of Knights of the Old Republic (the one where Carth talks you down and convinces you to come back to the light after you have murdered half your crew and taken up the title of Sith Lord), his/her death allowed the destruction of the Star Forge and prevented the destruction of the Republic at Revan's own hands.
And Link from Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, whose death kicked off the events of the entire game as it is heavily implied that the kid was actually dead the entire time and the game was just his journey to the afterlife.
I remember there was a phat collectables near my old house and me and my friend would pay 5 bucks to play halo reach for 1 hour but the people that works there just "forgot" about us so we were able to finish the game. X)

In bioshock infinite. There are infinite universes. Wouldn't that mean there would be many diverse Booker Dewitts. Why is your character the spawn of all other Comstocks? It honestly makes no sense for Booker to die.
