Adding the cold gas thrusters to this car will give it staying power unless others follow. But we already have the non production McMurtry Spéirling Fan Car. New class of racing?
YOU GOT IT ALL WRONG about the thrusters. They will point UP! Yes. To accelerate really fast you need traction. Downforce from airfoils need fast air passing over them, so they don't do anything at all at the "launch moment" when the car is not moving and when it really need some downforce to keep the tires from wasting energy. With the thrusters pushing the whole car against the ground you can REALLY accelerate fast without wasting energy on a burnout. You can have a light car that 'weights' a lot and can use all power available on the wheels to move forward. Just like a ground effect but without fans or wings. With thrusters!
This special stainless steel would also be great for ships and planes. Consider the flaws we have had with hull cracking on Aluminum destroyers, not to mention improvements with corrosion and paint restoration!
Lightening a car helps everything from handling, braking, and acceleration without going anything to the engine. Usually cheaper to just install a larger battery or engine.
Excellent analysis. The cold thruster traction enhancement you illustrated is pretty much exactly what I was anticipating. I imagine we'll see something very close to this in the final rendition of the new SpaceX Roadster.

I think the tires are already at the maximum grip possible. More power through the drivetrain will just mean wheel spin. Cold gas thrusters into a jet nozzle would give an added acceleration boost.
@@Joe4show think about it in reverse. Maximal braking is right at the edge of the tires slipping. If you were blast a a jet of gas forward at the same time. The additional force acts independently of the tires to increase deceleration. The tires and brakes don’t change. They continue to slow the car at the maximal ability of the tires to resist slip. The net force vector increases.
@@Joe4show Definitely, so long as the thrust acts through a point between the axles. Otherwise, if it acts behind the rear axle the downforce is less effective and causes a lifting force at the front wheels. I think a better use of the thrust would be by having it act laterally. If the thrust simply acted to push the car from the side you could corner at higher speeds. Lamborghini has a car with active aero (moving aerodynamic surfaces). speculations about rocket engines in the spaceX tesla roadster are useless, it will not have a fuel tank or e rocket engine, "just" compressed air tank and cold air thrusters the advantage is that the trusters are very compact (just a valve and a nozzle) and the compressed air tank is relatively safe if its inside the cabin and protected by the crumple zones but the downside are -the compressed air doesn't hold much energy the thrusters will need to expel about 50kg of air per second at 660m/s (1340mph) to achieve 1.3G of thrust and enable 1s 0-60 -it will require dozens of minute of running a noisy air compressor for each second of thrust -using the thrusters when the car is stationary or drives at low speed is less efficient. it provides the same force (newton) at any speed, thus lower power (Force * speed) and lower energy (force*distance) even though it is using the same amount of air -using the thrusters at partial thrust is less efficient (slower cold air velocity) -using the thrusters when the compressed air tank is partially depleted is less efficient (less pressure => slower cold air velocity) so you need longer longer thrust to achieve the same speed ideal operation of the thrusters is very short bursts of full 1.3G thrust, with long downtime periods to rebuild max 10000psi pressure
