Doug tearing into Ed's throne for "craftsmanship" on a prototype was super uncomfortable. We know he can output incredible stuff, but he's being asked to create brand-new products to match things a whole team is making in Mass. Sure disagree with some of the design choices, but don't insult the man's craftsmanship

Agreed. I don't think you should expect final product level quality on a prototype. That's just wasting time if it's not exactly right, which with Doug it almost never is. Keep up the great work Ed! Almost exciting to see your work featured.

      I agree.
Attacking Ed's work quality on a prototype to get a design is bad management on Doug's part. Ed has repeatedly been referred to as the rapid prototype guy; let him cook, and if it looks close, ask him to make a final product and see how it goes, but don't expect production quality out of a rapid prototype.
God knows worse quality products are being sold in furniture stores everywhere.

Yeah, I did lots of software prototyping in a startup and it was always a tough balance to find the right level of finish so that people could envision the end product. Depended on my audience and when it was going in front of the CEO, it needed to be pretty polished.
      Keep up the awesome Ed!

on this, i'm actually blaming editing team for making Dougie look a little more harsh than he needs to be. the Rambo joke through line is on point, but i think Dougie and Ed both understand it's a prototype. there's no reason to be like "this gap is an issue" nitpick-y. that's a sexy looking rogue chair, and to prove that it's a rogue chair, there's no seat or arm rests.
i get that the lead in was "Ed does the whole manufacturing" but that makes sense for the shield chair backs, because it's gaudy and silly and hard brand association and e$pensive....so it'll sell MAYBE hundreds. but that prototype with a couple sleek horizontal back slats would sell closer to thousands.

  • @josephwalston2249

I think Doug is processing out loud his concerns which can come off as not appreciating what Ed does, but is just him quickly having to assess a situation. I hope Ed understands that Doug having that level of comfort when looking at his work is a good thing, and Doug is looking at big picture. I also hope that Doug spends one on one time with Ed to show appreciation. I think it would be awesome if Doug could take a day to walk Ed through some of the woodworking techniques that he knows. I also think they should not have Ed do the prototypes anymore, but he should instead be in charge of the signature series one off things that customers want. They should run through a gate system for prototypes, where they have a gate for new designs. Usually it goes gate 1 is outline the problem and the cost of the product and resources they want to throw at it, gate 2 takes the design criteria and a quick proof of concept and feasibility and nail down the overall feel of the product, gate 3 is then doing a proof of manufacturing to see if the concept can be adapted to the manufacturing abilities they have, gate 4 is proof of production where any jigs and fixtures are created or added, and then gate 5 is the final go ahead and start making and selling it. The problem I think they are having is jumping from proof of concept and manufacturability at the same time. First get the overall spirit of the product figured out then adapt that to your manufacturing abilities, so proof of concept can be free creatively understanding that at the manufacturing prototype some features might need removed if they can’t be done. Before moving to the next gate though a person from each department sales, customer service, manufacturing, engineering etc needs to be there to sign off before moving on, so they all feel they have a say and buy off on the product.

The moment where Doug goes in on Ed’s craftsmanship not being up to snuff or demonstrated on a prototype was wild. Whether it’s just for the wyrmlife of it all or not, that’s one of the biggest managerial red flags to me as a worker. When their inflated ego about the job they no longer do makes them critique something that was not in the project description.

I think it was pretty clear that Ed put the prototype together to give a very overall look at what's possible, and because he's making prototypes they have to be easy to adjust/modify so he can take it apart and remake it with rapid changes.
Because Ed's work often ends up surprisingly well-finished for prototypes, they just forget that he's basically cranking out most of the prototypes quickly to be prototypes and are not the intended final versions.
That said, I love the "extra-ness" of that chair and can't wait to see the updated version when it's ready!

I think a lot of these comments are being too hard on Doug. His heart is in the right place, but a lot of times his mouth operates about 3 seconds faster than his brain. Crazy Ed has done a lot of next level stuff and is an excellent craftsman, but he's also a prototyper. These are two very different roles, but he's talented enough to fill both. I don't think Doug was pointing out flaws to be a jerk, he was just saying these are issues that need to be shored up on an actual product. You can't put an actual chair together with pocket screws, it wouldn't last a month.

The comment about quality with the chair kinda go to me. its one thing if its the final product and if its a prototype proof of concept let try and bunch of stuff and see what fits kinda job. the Gaps and stuff are just things that are part of a prototype, the veneer point might be a valid consern but the chair looks good and it did its job of showing off a lot of different ways that you could take the final product.

The benches look fine, but visually, the simplicity of the cushion does not match the esthetic of the wood design underneath. You have this quality wood piece with a simple cushion on top. What if you shrunk the cushion to where there is a 1 to 2 inch wood border around it and you used a pin cushion of a chosen color. The "buttons" that would provide the pin cushion look could be a different accent color as well.

@@yochva Piping is not a bad option either. My concern is the price increase for a signature series should also include a higher end (at least visually) cushion design. Also, I am not a fan of the cushion wrapping around the top of the bench. I would attach the cushion directly to the top of the bench or make it swappable if you want to purchase various colors without having to buy multiple benches.

The real solution was for Doug to ask Ed to finish the prototype so they sign off and then ask for a client chair after the prototype is done to see what his actual technique choices would be when not just trying to bum rush a color selection/vibe.
It's a thing that happens a lot in tech, prototype programmers, enterprise/bulk programmers, small greenfield programmers and maintenance programmers we're all VERY different breeds by default and its unfair to call out a prototype as not being enterprise quality when thats not at all what was even asked in the first place.
The actual proper solution would be to have a VR setup for these things for the simplicity of using a 3d render for early color picks, insert placements, and bevel depths/styles exactly so you dont get bogged down in "theres a gap in this color prototype""

  • @travisty222

The comments Doug made, bashing Ed's prototype, is still rubbing me the wrong way....
As a programmer I prototype all the time. In *no way* are prototypes meant to be production quality. They are literally, "here's an idea, try it out and see if you like it."
Sure, Doug needs to worry about production; but, at the same time, he should not ridicule someone on quality when that was not the point of what was being shown to him.

Everyone criticizing Doug over the comments are way overreacting. Doug is assuaging the desire for Ed's design choices. I don't know if he (Doug) reads a lot of comments, but I see a bunch of people drooling over Ed's designs, which yes are cool and interesting. However he is pointing out in this video the issues with Ed's chair here. Does it come off as harsh? Maybe. I think they know Ed can mock things up quickly and is able to present them with things that are at scale and LOOK close enough to the production model to make decisions without spending resources on the full scale equipment that may just not work. It's a matter of resource management.
Could Ed slow down and produce customer level product? I'm sure he could, he would need the industrial level equipment they use to match the finish of the end product which might be complicated, depends on demand and volume and so much more than "I would buy the thing based off this short hand filmed video." Ed's time is probably worth a LOT more than you would be willing to pay for a chair, I'm sure. Cool designs, but don't crap on people just because they are being realistic.

So... when they're done with the popsicles, does Wyrmwood use the sticks to make MTGs?

If the bench was straight, you could store the toppers on the bench shelf.

I would consider outsourcing the cushion fabric on this one. Maybe someone who can do embroidery or something to not put what looks like a cheap etsy cushion on a very fine, bespoke bench.

I seem to recall a recent episode in which some sort of comments were made about the amount of time Crazy Ed spends on stuff. If you want a prototype that is showroom ready, it is going to take Crazy Ed more time. If you want a rapid prototype to assess how something might look, while complaining about how much time things take, the 1st draft is not the place to expect everything to be perfect. That's not fair. I feel like Doug has been in position long enough to understand that and be mindful of that. But that's not what we see in this video.

If you brought the throne to the MGT line I'm sure you would sell a bunch. I know myself if I could get it for my elm MGT getting 1 or 2 would be a no brainer for me

I would be verry careful putting alot of small detail on a surface that gets handled alot such as the armrests on the chairs. Glued on wood will eventually were off or chip easier there

Crazy idea. Why hinge the bench? Use vertical hinges and have it come up like the table tops you did a while ago on the lilipup i think. Itbwould be neat if it went up and back away from the table. As it stands id have to get up walk around or over the bench to open it. For a high end item i shouldnt be inconvenienced as a customer if im payong 10k plus for a table and bench.

the curve is the issue with the hinges letting it pivot away vs towards the table.

Adam Savage said there are three points on production triangle, Fast, Good, and Cheap. You only get two, if you want Fast and Good, it won't be cheap. You are choosing Heirloom prototypes, do you want Expensive Ed or Slow Ed? Doug saying he hasn't seen quality work from Ed is ridiculous.

He's saying that he knows the quality that he's seen is not production quality. The question seemed to be could they offer Crazy Ed one off products, and his concerns that he hasn't seen the right level of craftsmanship yet start to be valid. Remember, he's always been appreciative of Ed, but the fine details need to be precise. His ideas are regularly being implemented, but he still may not be a perfect craftsmanship yet.

Hey Doug - you might wanna lay off Ed. He constantly goes above and beyond, and has come up with a LOT of great innovative ideas that y'all are currently selling and making money on. You may be too full of yourself to realize it, but if he walks, it would be a big loss for Wyrmwood.
Also, I've never seen a more talented and skilled woodworker.

Your Rambo chair appears to have equivalent precision to your C&C line of stuff you already produce. We have been getting all sorts of ill-fitting jank out of Wyrmwood already, so that chair as is fits right in.
