It really is! I would have thought it would have happened in the mid-90s, but this one really shows how some genres were branching out into some subgenres. Even though it's not my fave, I really love the incorporation of the variety of sounds. For the 2000s, 2002 just has an energy I really vibe with! 🤗 But we have 6 more for the decade, so that could change fast! It's crazy how much I look forward to these!!
2003 was also the year Apple launched the iTunes Music Store. I like to think it’s easy access to music helped people to really diversify their music tastes, resulting in an eclectic bunch of styles in pop music from this point on to the rest of the 2000’s.
@@thegeecyproject - MTV did also play a variety of videos of rock, pop, hip-hop, dance, metal and soul in the 90s before they went full-time reality-TV. That might have also been what gave us the eclectic sounds of 2003.
Mashing Jay-Z and Linkin Park as a wink to Collision Course, one of the proto mashups: one of so many awesome winks you get to discover listening to these jams,. Loveeeeeee it
I was 7, discovering The Simpsons (along with the Hit & Run game!) for the first time and geeking out over the “Seven Nation Army” and “Hey Ya!” videos when I got home from school. 2003 was the year I fell in love with popular music. Very formative year for me.
Album Covers In The Beginning: Blink-182 - Blink-182 Scissor Sisters - Laura The Strokes - Room on Fire Panjabi MC - The Album David Banner - Mississippi: The Album DMX - X Gon Give It To Ya 50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin' The White Stripes - Elephant The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
My first bold prediction: The mashup opens with the horns from Beyonce's "Crazy In Love" (which btw, if this song appears (which it probably will), it'll be Beyonce's debut in this series as a solo artist), and the "One, two, three, uh!" from OutKast's "Hey Ya!" is used during the title card. I'm also thinking Kanye will likely make his first appearance in the series with "Through the Wire," which was released as a single in 2003.
@@Nicksterbruh We'll might also see the debuts of Muse, Black Eyed Peas, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Killers. Maybe even Death Cab for Cutie or M83. Probably Kelly Clarkson as well.
@@justaguy3007 would love to hear something from Muse’s “Absolution” be sampled! I was hoping I’d hear “Plug In Baby” somewhere in the 2001 mashup but it already seems very sample-dense. I can get why they couldn’t fit it in.
As soon as we see video shot from the inside of someone's mouth, that's gonna be Franz Ferdinand's "Darts of Pleasure". I predict the accompanying audio will be the drums from the start of the song. (In the video, the singer sings the song while brushing his teeth).
Pleasantly surprised they chose to sample “Darts of Pleasure”; I figured we wouldn’t hear Franz in this series until “Take Me Out” in 2004. No complains though, that first Franz Ferdinand album was the first album I ever bought as a kid. Still holds up incredibly well today!
Agreed. I particularly like the way the first part of the mashup is a story. Mr Brightside is all about jealousy and a mental health death spiral, until Andre 3000 comes in with "Alright alright alright alright" and cheers everyone up, while the backing track is the same but more upbeat. That's not just music, it's a narrative arc. The Hood Internet do that kind of thing in several of their mashups as little easter eggs.

So José González is featured, and so is the Knife. González covered "Heartbeats" by the Knife, which was released at the tail end of 2002. I wonder if we'll hear González's version mixed with any other Knife songs?
...and achieved bigger chart success in 2005, which probably explains why you heard it so late. I heard it in late 2004, and it wound up being a favorite hit song of 2005 on many lists.
@@chrisrj9871 it’s cool how he puts songs in the year they first came out as singles if they were released before the albums they were on, or if the singles came out after the album’s release, then whatever year that album was released (like The Reason, released as a single in Jan 04, after the album’s release in Dec 03)
Every time I watch another one of these I think, yeah they can't be expected to top what they did with the ones from the 80s. And I am gradually realizing that it has nothing to do with the talent of the mixing, which has only increased, but more with the fact that you can't continue to make great mixes out of crap music. The general output of the industry has really gone downhill (80% of it, anyway) over the past 2-to-3 decades.
@@markghughes LOL. Yes, every difference of opinion someone has with you must mean "OK Boomer!" Good analytical thinking, there, congrats. P.S.: Coming from a dude with "Yacht Rock" playlists, seems like you might be projecting...?
"My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, and they're like... you're a superstar!"
That is indeed how we feel about these mashups
'03 joins '84, '87, '88, '95, and '99 as my favourites from the series. Brilliant, creative work.
That Seven Nation Army and Toxic mix was *chef’s kiss*

Extra points for not distorting the aspect ratio of some videos and keeping them as they are.
FANTASTIC! When you guys make one of these that doesn’t give my goosebumps, let me know.
This is one of the best yet. Just fantastic from start to finish.
Probably one of the most eclectic years of all in terms of music genres in popular music.
Ooooh, the layers are juicy in this one! 👏🏻 Another gem. 👍🏻
Idk why this got recommended but i am gald it did this is beautiful 🤧
Hey, that was pretty damn good!! Great job!!!
The 99 problems smashing in at the end hits hard
These are so beautiful 🥺
these are always amazing!!
I'm eager to learn if, 19 years later, Stacy's Mom still has it going on
The dawn of Fuse TV is upon us.
Lol holy crap fuse tv
Hidden between Yeah Yeah Yeah singing "wait, they don't love me like I love you"
Absolutely she does.
I see the video but I don't hear the sample.
Nice to see Electric Six!
Mashing Jay-Z and Linkin Park as a wink to Collision Course, one of the proto mashups: one of so many awesome winks you get to discover listening to these jams,. Loveeeeeee it
Outkast hey ya, and hoobastanks the reason was all I remember from 03 being big hits

This comment turned me into dust.

I was four and Finding Nemo was the first film I saw in theaters
I was 7, discovering The Simpsons (along with the Hit & Run game!) for the first time and geeking out over the “Seven Nation Army” and “Hey Ya!” videos when I got home from school.
2003 was the year I fell in love with popular music. Very formative year for me.
i miss hood internet's mashups

My favourite song of all time was released in 2003! This is gonna be a special one!
I’d say the Andre 3000’s count-in from “Hey Ya!” is a given.
@@Nicksterbruh We'll might also see the debuts of Muse, Black Eyed Peas, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Killers. Maybe even Death Cab for Cutie or M83. Probably Kelly Clarkson as well.
Here's my prediction: Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You" over Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps"
@@thegeecyproject Absolutely! Take Me Out is my favourite song from the early 2000s
What a year. To be 11 again 😭
Yup.
Easily the best of the 2000’s so far, and not just because Mr. Brightside is in it. Oh, the childhood nostalgia is coming back to me!

Coming out of my cage and I've been doing just fine
Gotta, gotta be down because I want it all
It started out with a kiss; how did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss; it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep and she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke and she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed, and my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head, but she's touching his
Chest now, he takes off her
Dress now, let me go
Alright, alright, alright, alright, alright
now, fellas (Yeah?)
Now, what cooler than being cool? (Ice cold!)
kay, now ladies (Yeah?)
I said what's cooler than being cool? (Ice cold!)
Shake it, shake, shake it, shake it, shake, shake it (Uh oh)
Shake it, shake, shake it, shake it, shake it (Uh oh)
Shake it like a Polaroid picture, hey ya!
Shake it, shake, shake it, shake it, shake, shake it
Shake it, shake it, shake it, sugar
Shake it like a Polaroid picture

WELCOME 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣4️⃣🎉
What a titanic year.
Huh, I never knew Mr Brightside came out in 2003. I always thought it came out in 2006.
I just found that out too. It was initially released as a single in September 2003 then re-released along with their album Hot Fuss in 2004.
...and achieved bigger chart success in 2005, which probably explains why you heard it so late.
I heard it in late 2004, and it wound up being a favorite hit song of 2005 on many lists.
@@chrisrj9871 Yeah, makes sense.
@@chrisrj9871 it’s cool how he puts songs in the year they first came out as singles if they were released before the albums they were on, or if the singles came out after the album’s release, then whatever year that album was released (like The Reason, released as a single in Jan 04, after the album’s release in Dec 03)
@@gmt921 - Others like to go by chart success or what they remember, like a 2015 mix would have songs very much from November 2014.
😭😭😭
Cool mix but wasn't Mr.Brightside released in 2004 lol?
It was released in September 2003
It had its earliest release in 2003 but was released again after the success of Mr. Brightside.
2003, IMO the year when good music either took a backseat or said goodbye forever as 2004 approached.
We get it. You're old.
@@markghughes LOL. Yes, every difference of opinion someone has with you must mean "OK Boomer!" Good analytical thinking, there, congrats.
