Delighted to see us in Ben’s Top 10, er ... Ben! 😁 Always slightly puzzled when you say The Miniaturist doesn’t have an opening title sequence - cause my (2) copies do! How bizarre - I wonder if there were different pressings...hmm 🤔 Anyway, as you know, I completely agree with your evaluation of the stories. And NOW, we’re soon to experience the (difficult?) second album! I really like the finished products - and this time, we’ve got the Hartnell Doctor in completely uncharted territory. Can’t wait to hear what the listenership makes of them! Luke was asking me when the trailer’s coming out; well, as chance would have it, I came off the phone with Mr Briggs about 5 minutes ago - and I believe it’s an audiogram that’ll be hitting Twitter at 10am this Wednesday - so look out for that. All the best, as ever, S 😊
Upon reading your comments here I decided to double check and sure enough my original download is missing the Miniaturist's opening titles. However upon heading back to the Big Finish website and downloading it again I've found an updated version with an extra track, the titles have been found! Funny how due to the Miniaturist's unusual and unnerving atmosphere myself and Ben simply put it down to that rather than a simple mistake having been made 😂 I haven't checked my own physical copy although I imagine this was just a digital error that was caught before they came to burning the discs. It's almost as if our own version of The Time Meddler's lost 12 seconds has just been found 😂 Thank you Stephen! I look forward to giving that a listen tomorrow and getting a tease at what this second volume has to offer! (Not that I need a trailer to convince me to buy it, as I already have it on pre-order anyway!) Luke,
@@tardisguy1235 Well, I think you and Ben must now relisten to ALL of The Miniaturist - now you’ve discovered the title sequence; I’m sure it will take on several new layers of meaning! 😁 I think as, a story and as a piece of sound design, it’s a hard 2-part story to follow - but we’re blessed in The Demon Song with the same composer/designer, Toby. It relies so much on music for its effects - the clue’s in the title - that he balked at the task to start with. But I think it’s a worthy follow-up to TM, in that I think it’s effectively eerie and disturbing. I personally think that’s the principle point of Doctor Who - or at least at the core of its essence. But the DS also has a lot of humour - and we’ve got two terrifically entertaining guest performances from Henry Nott and Bhavnisha Parmar, who become my temporary companions as - of course! - I’m separated from Lauren to facilitate two narrative strands. Again, in Incherton, there’s a FANTASTIC uneasy alliance between myself and a female American character (look out for the Doctor’s accidental?/deliberate? Inability to get her name right) played by the extraordinary Genevieve Gaunt. Nick’s script is fascinating - I hope you’ll agree - drawing on the economic specifics of Britain’s plight in the immediate aftermath of WWII. One of the joys of this job is the huge amount of input Nick allows me - in the Hartnellising of the lines, but also sending me earlier edits of the episodes to discuss; it’s fascinating, for instance, to hear them without the music. Nick’s also written it for Incherton - and done a brilliant job! Where does he find the time? I was sorry to hear, btw, that you both weren’t utterly enchanted by Kaleidoscope, and that Ben didn’t finish listening to it. For some reason, I think it gets far more fascinating in episodes 5 and 6 - I can’t think why - in fact, I think they should put the last third out as a separate release! 😉🤣 Anyway, always delighted to hear you two opining on our endeavours. It’s really much appreciated! And I’ll reply to your other message too in a bit, Luke. Bestest, S
@@stephennoonan8417 Funnily enough I was planning to relisten to The Outlaws and The Miniaturist soon anyway on the lead up to the release of a certain box set coming out next month (what it's called and who it stars seems to have escaped me for the moment but I'm sure it'll come back to me 😉) so it seems that'll be the perfect opportunity to listen to it all, rather than just 99% of it 😂 I've also noticed the inclusion of a kettle finishing boiling at the end of the previously missing track, a key to unlocking much more of what the story has to offer I'm sure! 😉 Wonderful to hear how in similar fashion to Dennis Spooner pushing what Doctor Who could do back when he became story editor for season two, The Demon Song is carring on that tradition almost six decades later by pushing what can be done in the audio medium! I feel like I've harped on a lot about my excitement for Incherton and let the box set's title story slip under my radar slightly, but I am nevertheless keen to feast my ears upon it... It's great to hear how much you're enjoying all aspects of the job, your passion certainly comes across in the finished product and really helps things go the extra mile! It's also wonderful how you not only follow the stories through to completion but even beyond by seeing how they're going down with us the fans, chatting with us and giving some welcome pieces of insight behind the scenes too! I'm happy to report that Ben is currently in the process of giving Kaleidoscope another go and that he feels like he's clicked with it much more this time, I believe he's up to part five at the moment so he's just getting to "the good stuff" 😉 Doctor Who is one of mine and Ben's favourite things (I'm sure that'll come as a huge shock to you 😂) so we're always happy to talk about it and put our opinions out there on the internet. Thank you for taking the time to not only watch our videos and listen to our thoughts but to also leave such delightful comments on them too! All the best, Luke
@@tardisguy1235 The sound of that kettle is ESSENTIAL to the understanding of the piece, you’re correct, Luke. Without it, the following click is meaningless - and that of course then leads to everything else! (Not particularly) fun fact: the voice of the North Yorkshire newscaster in that first scene is myself - at the end of the day’s recording. He may be my finest ever performance - and surely worthy of a spin-off series! I wouldn’t worry too much about NOT grappling with Kaleidoscope. What on earth the Nanobots - or indeed ‘Mick Jagger’ - had to do with the plot I never quite fathomed; indeed it may be unfathomable. But, as Tom Baker used to say, ‘If you understand the play, it’s no good!’ I strongly suspect that - like myself - Doctor Who may be a little more important in your and Ben’s lives than many people would consider healthy or normal - but what can we do?! It is, I fear, an incurable addiction. But not, I’m fairly sure, a fatal one. 😁 Several interesting questions were raised by you in that other thread, and I’ll tackle them shortly... Did I say that yesterday? 🤷🏻♂️🤣
That's great. I look forward to the demon song. Recently relistened to the outlaws and was just as good second time around. I'd love to see your version of the first doctor get a six part story
My favorite for 2022 was the revival of an old range. Doctor Who Unbound: Doctor of War: Genesis (Destiny was really good too, but I loved Genesis!) Colin Baker's take on the War Doctor (or the Warrior) is amazing! It's one of his best performances! I also love the sheer chaos of this version of the Time War; it's so warped that it seems none of the three stories take place in the same continuity. Also, after doing stories with Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Sylvester McCoy & Paul McGann, we finally pair up Colin Baker & Geoffrey Beevers. And it is amazing; "Aftershocks" is the jewel in the crown of this set. Long story short, if you miss the days of early, experimental Big Finish (Creatures of Beauty, Flip Flop, anything by Rob Shearman), get this set!
I'd certainly recommend it Ben! Although with The Demon Song not long away you may want to hold off purchasing for a little bit as they could put The Outlaws on sale to tie in with its release.
Honestly the Outlaws two story set is absolutely brilliant - Mr Noonan covers the whole range of the first doctor with care and acting ability capable of putting you on the edge of your seat with tension, and chuckling away the next minute with his impeccable first doctor timing!
