This is so interesting, I can’t believe velociraptors might have been iridescent

I'm so happy science has truly marched on to the point we can learn real dino colors when all the books I read as a kid kept saying it was "impossible".

One of the most interesting pigment studies I've ever heard about was done on Archaeopteryx. For the longest time, when Archaeopteryx was depicted in paleo-art and paleo-media, it was depicted as VERY brightly colored, and also depicted as a vast menagerie of colors, almost like a parrot. Well, in 2015, a study was done on pigment cells found in the feathers of Archaeopteryx fossils and the study showed that depiction to be COMPLETELY false. Archaeopteryx, as it turns out, had a color scheme on its feathers that was actually very similar to a crow: it was primarily black, with patches of either grey or silver (probably running parallel to its armbones).

That's really bloody interesting! It actually does make it almost more fascinating that it wasnt all colourful but more like a crow. Thanks very much for the comment mate!

Is it really countershading or is the body just putting melanin where the UV hits?

That's actually a really good point. Although in the case of sharks it's definitely counter-shading because UV doesn't penetrate water. But for dinosaurs, you've got me stumped there. I'm gonna have to do some research on this, thank you!

I'm sure you're not the only one 😂. I really want to believe it, I love depictions of feathered T-rex's but I'm yet to see fossil evidence that persuades me.
