  • G'day Friends!
Today I am re-visiting how I started art journaling back in 2015 and giving you a cute collage moment and a LOOOONG tangent-y chat :)
Hope the message finds you well, I still feel a little vulnerable about being candid and open. I can't promise I will always express myself eloquently but I hope it shows that I'm trying my best to learn how :)

James, to be open and candid is to be vulnerable; but it is the only way I've found, in my 76 years, to be authentic and true to myself. I've followed your channel for several years, and find you, your art, and your life as you share it to be thoroughly delightful. Creativity just bubbles out of you. We all have good and bad times, sides of ourselves; but you also have a fantastic sense of humor; and that is extremely valuable. Applause, applause, applause....

I like that you can be so honest about your shortcomings or past behaviors you are not as proud of...so many people cover those up with defense mechanisms...thanks for being a REAL person and able to be vulnerable, publicly. Modeling that attitude and approach to life helps others to be more authentic as well. Your artwork is awesome too!!

OK so I was totally dying over here when you were ripping some of those pages out of your journals!! But I also understand and since they are YOUR journals, I suppose it's allowed. (Haha.) It's funny how our interaction with our own pages can shift over time. Some of the old journal pages that I used to love really irk me now. Maybe one day I'll give myself permission to redo them. For some reason it bothers me to mess up the chronology of my journals. Silly, I know! I always love your work- that last two-page spread is so buttery! And of course I love your videos, but I would TOTALLY understand if you needed a sabbatical. We all need that sometimes!

James you are such light in this crafty world! You are so genuine and heart warming. You are such a huge reason why I kept going with my UA-cam and made the jump to try Etsy! You just being you allowed me to just shed some fear and be myself on video. Thank you for all you do for this community and sharing yourself!

damn your art is awesome!! xx great chat, too. the world was made clearer to me, when i first really 'felt' the sentiment. to "choose your arguments!" lol that's made a huge impact on me, & freedom. 1) i'm so not always right, just because i dogmatically dig my toes in. 2) i'd say most arguments that i'd jump on, were in some way too bs to offer my energy to/didn't need to feed m hurt pride. saving our energy for all the things that truly matter, is so much more holistically balanced imho. 3) walking away isn't weak, it's survival/it's often the clearer decision. art IS therapy, & just getting our anxieties & issues out through the many avenues of it leads us back to the light. but we do need to process it, so the dark stuff is just as vitally important as the light. honor both, i say. it's like writing that shitty letter that you needn't send, but getting the toxins our, has freed us. with art & writing, as Barb Owen does, we can then black gesso over it, & do beautiful collage work. i sang in rock bands for many years, & belting out songs was just the best therapy Lol. blessings to you, dude xx

I can relate to this video so much. After years of struggling with opiate addiction I finally got clean in 2011. I met a wonderful man, had a baby, bought a house, and did all the things I was suppose to do. But still there was something missing. I was a wife and a mother yes...and as wonderful and fulfilling as that can be...it wasn't enough. When my daughter started first grade last year, suddenly I had all this time on my hands to be...ME. To find myself. I had no idea who I was because I ran from myself for so long. I used to spend hours just pacing the house. Just...pacing. Like the lost soul that I was. I felt that I had thrown away the best years of my life. I used to fantasize about going back in time and getting a do over. That I would wake up, be sixteen again and find out that it was all just a very bad dream. I couldn't accept my past nor the fact that my youth was gone. I was now 35 and had no idea who or what I was. I felt lonely, and yet I didn't want to be around other people. I felt scared, of what I didn't even know. But mostly I felt that I was wasting away. I wanted to find meaning. Within my heart. In my soul. It is then that I found the art community. I always dabbled into art, but never imagined it would become so important to me. I'm still finding myself, but it's been a lot easier to do so with people like you in my life to look up to. You have no idea who I am. But I see you. And I appreciate you.

We all want to have an impact in society and in the world! There is nothing wrong with that and it is healthy to want to be recognize in any way as long as it is not something you need to validate yourself or your work! We deserve the recognition but we should be able to know our value with or without it. Being an artist in any art form comes with the acceptance of some audience or your public! We love your videos!

And so now this is ALL I do since the Pandemic. I am disconnected from my community as well, and just look for inspo on UA-cam. Found your journal vids this morning, SO BEAUTIFUL!!! Your placement, color palettes and ideas are dope. And then you started talking about your journey and I almost cried ----- thought it was just me. I miss the stage and that community so much but I feel like it will never be the same. I like that you are genuine and you sharing your thoughts to a public audience in such a natural way is something I hope I can do when I start making videos. if you were able to have all the people who are your art fans in one venue, you would know by the applause that you are a star. ⭐️

I am so chuffed that one of my idols is sort of going the direction that I am!!! I am done with themed journals or one a day spreads and trying to make the cool minimal watercolor and ink collage pieces flow with my daily journaling and art inspirations and quote collections and book notes and class notes and patterns. I am going to go crazy in my journals and make backgrounds and pages and try everything I want to try and I will leave the writing and journaling until it strikes me. Some pages have a lot. Some pages are minimalist. Some have no room for words and I am ok with that. Thank you, James. Thank you for being an example of a life lived as it flows. Not giving up a thing, just allowing the thing to be in its own time.

Gratitude is a way of life and of living, sometimes I forget that. I was a doll artist and my whole life changed about 15 years ago when I became disabled. Yes, it was a little speedy - I had a bit of a struggle keeping al the footage in and not making the video even longer. Looking back I maybe should have just split the videos up and gone a little slower - thank you for your feedback :) - J

In my opinion, “should” is one of the most destructive words in the dictionary! Just sayin’... Love your work and appreciate you! 💖

Watching you redecorate had a few "oh no, that looked lovely... oh, okay, that's nice too"-moments. I was holding my breath when you flipped to the page with the mermaid on the right. A regular thriller. And she survived, phew.

Thanks James for sharing with us love your work and Video's wait for them every week , I think we all get those feeling of discouragement from Time to time . The word should is the most awful word as it shames us and invokes awful feelings in us as in not being good enough. personally I wish the word did not exist . your awsome creative and so Talented James and unique . love ya

I don't have any videos like that, but it is something I can keep in the back of my mind for the future - thank you for letting me know these are things viewers might be curious about. I can't promise anything but I can hopefully try to throw in more specifically helpful tips along the way :)

I looked on your amazon list and around but can not seem to find it. Can you please tell me where you got the transparent file box that had all your scrap pieces? Around 5:30.

Oh, those were from Daiso! My bad, I forgot to mention. There are some versions of them on Amazon under "Clear file folders", but they're like 10 times the price! I got each of these for $1.50 at Daiso. Not sure if that helps, I guess it does if there's a store near you (fingers crossed)

@@JamesLukeBurkeCreative Thank you so much for your response! I am in Las Vegas and we have a few stores like that around, my sister also lives in Japan, so I will be on the lookout. They look very handy and exactly what I need, all of my scraps are currently in a shoebox lid. Hard to use anything when you can't see half of it. Thanks again for sharing this video and your musings with us!

Hi James! ☺️ I’m Lisa. You probably don’t remember me, but we met at Creativation last year. I was with Irit Landgraf and we spent quite some time at your booth. I got to know you and Steve a little bit and looked through your art journals. You even have a photo with me in your Fauxbonichi... 😂🤪
So I listened to everything you said in your video and just wanted to let you know that I LOOOOOVE watching you create, I LOOOOVE your art and I also love listening to you talk! You said your weekend wasn’t the best and sometimes you don’t feel like continuing doing what you do... just know that I think you’re amazing! You have such a cool personality, you’re fun and friendly and your art is beyond amazing!!! 🌈🌸⭐️ I hope this little positive message can help you feel better! Sending hugs 💗
    Lisa
