  • Leica just announced the brand new Leica M10-R, an update to the M10 with a new 40MP sensor. I was fortunate enough to have a couple of weeks with the camera last month to try it out and share my thoughts.

      Funny that's exactly what did I back in the 80s...but eventually after spending about $10K and years shooting with digital DSLR and lenses, I eventually wanted to continue evolving, and picked up a used Leica Q, and then the Leica X-vario, both automatic with fixed lenses....but the important point is that both cameras produce the mythical ”Leica image’ which is amazing. So what I did, start small, and grow from there. Now since listening about the M10-R, hmmm, do I need to get that camera... I know I will upgrade eventually, and trade in my Q and Vario-x for something more advanced....

      Do what I do... use fuji bodies with leica glass.
      Higher tech bodies, film sims, available as slr xt style or rangefinder xpro.
      Leica glass you keep.
      Only a leica film body is worth keep. Even a non functioning one on a shelf.
      Digital bodies are gorgeous future landfill imho. Its the fact that you need proprietary batteries for these things.

    I have an M6 too, with the same lens, and I really debated hard over whether or not to move to the digital M for work as I love it for the same reasons you do. Like you say, it’s an expensive system no matter how you slice it, and in the end I moved from my 5D to a Nikon D850 and a bunch of studio stuff and lenses due to resolution issues. It’s a hard call though because if you’re a working pro then any camera is just a business expense, but ultimately I think the SL2 or a camera like the D850/Z7 with that resolution and AF is probably a more sensible option. Damn tempting though now that they’ve updated the sensor. I don’t think Leica are overpriced but I do think their market is a very specific value set.

    The M6 is also my everyday use camera, and I don't currently have any kind of digital camera other than my phone. I think all the time that if I were to get a digital camera, some options from Fuji would be appealing because they have something of the film camera charm to them, but I know that even though I could never afford it, the M10 would really be the perfect companion to the M6

    The Leica rangefinder system is so tempting, even as a photojournalist its still viable, i've shot some work that didnt need the photos imediatly on my M4-P and the work just flows so well and smoothly, especially when compared to the huge 1DX's i normally use, the people even react different when youre using such a small and silent camera like that, one day ill have the courage to trade my gear in for M's.

    This a camera that nobody asked for. No one ever complained about the lack of detail coming from an M10. The 24MP M10 sensor can provide you with already sufficient detail for most applications. The larger file size is just going to be more taxing on whatever device you use to edit and store your photos. I wonder how well this camera is going to do when you can get a used M10 in the $4K-5K range.
    On a side note, the 50 Summilux is an amazing lens. It's the best I have ever used. Spend your extra money on that and not a new M10-R.

    • @alvareo92
      @alvareo92 4 роки тому

      Yeah well, sadly the megapixel race is still alive and well, and people want smaller and smaller pixels cramped into their 24x36 sensors. There IS a market for a high MP rangefinder, since they’re the only ones making digital rangefinders now

    Got an M10 about a year ago new for half price (a guy owned 4 of them and had never used it, just wanted to get rid of it) and it's my favorite camera ever. I'll probably get the next gen M, the M10R isn't quite enough of an upgrade for me to change, and those huge files will take too much space on my hard drives 😂

  • @nunosantos8784
    @nunosantos8784 4 роки тому +1

    During 25 years I was creating excuses to not get into the most desirable system, the M system, even if I tried a few years ago to buy a M7, unsuccessfully. This year I made that step with the M-E (typ 240). It's just the camera that gives me the most pleasure shooting. It´s a different league and the most challenging camera I´ve ever had, and for that same reason, the one that completely transformed the way of seeing the creative process and the act of photographing. After trying an M10, I still prefer the colors of the M240, but maybe in the future I'll add another M, maybe this one.
    Aside note... keep the simplicity Matt, well done.

    • @jenquest

    You never shot a summilux 50? Awe man, leica was CRUEL sending you that AND asking you to return it!
    I have no leica bodies, just a 50 summilux.
    I have no fuji lenses, just a xt3
    Yeah, what a pair!
    I do all of my street with that pair.
    Wouldn’t mind a 21mm with it since the camera is aps-c and makes the summilux an 80.
    I had a voightlander nokton 50 before that.
    Leica made the 3x price (now 4x!) worth it. Focus tab way faster focusing. Built in lens hood. Mechanical feel way better. Optically the ca is way more controlled than the nokton.
    I shoot using the jpg ooc with the fuji sims. I archive the raw. So the summilux helped that equation because of its cleaner image wide open, look, and faster tab focusing.
    Love your M6

I don't think anything will every be as good for a 50mm or a 90 as the m3 finder that I have come to love. I don't think I could justify all that resolution in a m10r since I have been pretty happy with my film results but I would love to try the m10d or m10 monochrome. Getting color chemicals and getting somebody to develop c41 these days is tuff. It makes me miss my old m9.

    wait a couple months and get a used m10r will be a smarter choice. I got my m10 at full retail, and after 2 years of happy use, I’ve picked up a used m10p for 2500 cheaper than the m10 at retail. even a brand new one is about 1300 cheaper. that 2500 will get you the 50 lux. That’s the lesson I’ve learned from first time getting a leica brand new.

    I thought that ISO 50000 at 7:59 was way better than my old Canon 5D MKii at ISO 6400 tbh. To me it's a usable image. Actually for that price, you could buy a fleet of Ricoh GRIII or take the family on holiday...

    Why not the Q2 as an addition to the SL2? It would help with the documenting approach, it is also small and you could use it with one hand. Also you can share the batteries :)

    I’d love to hear your opinion on the color/b&w differences between the M10R vs SL2. Do you feel that the M gives more of a punchier color then the SL2? Do you see any noise differences in the b&w files?

      @mattdayphoto  4 роки тому

      I didn't shoot anything side-by-side as I didn't have my SL2 at the time, but I haven't noticed any major differences between the two. The SL2 does have about 7 more megapixels than the M10-R though, if that makes a difference for you.

    • @_willfunk_
      @_willfunk_ 4 роки тому

      Matt Day Hey Matt, thanks for getting back with me!! For me, the megapixels isn’t really that important. In fact, I think I’d rather prefer 30 megapixels vs 40. It’s Leica’s statement that the M10-R has a better color rendition then previous models that’s got me intrigued.

      Matt Day yep I watched it. Great video as always from you 👌🏻 From what I’ve seen the V4 is quite similar to the Nokton in almost all respects and in some cases is sharper at smaller apertures. However you know how it is with Leica gear, you want it because it’s Leica and has the prestige etc. I had a Summicron ASPH but sold it because i didn’t like how sharp and clinical it rendered. Was a little boring.

    What are your thoughts on spending that much on a digital camera that at some point will drop to a tiny fraction of the value due to aging. That's what is so different to me about investing in analog cameras vs digital. Take good care of the M6 and you can always sell it for the same or more than you bought it from. But digital, it's always a loss. Of course I too still shoot and own digital cameras, but at this price point that is what comes to my mind.

    • @mattdayphoto
      @mattdayphoto  4 роки тому

      It's definitely a lot to spend on something that we know is gonna lose value over time, BUT the digital Leica bodies do hold value far better than any other brands. The cost of film and processing, for me, is always something I keep in mind as well. Given the amount of rolls I've bought and processed from my M6 over the years, I could own at least two M10-Rs for that price alone. Haha.
