This movie also leans into a VERY toxic movie trope: 'you know you love someone because they drive you nuts'. NOPE. Real love is the opposite of annoyance.

And also as it starts from when we're little. Others telling us that the boys are pulling our hair or whatever coz they supposedly like us. Nevermind if it hurts; be it physically or emotionally. We're supposed to feel flattered that they're giving us attention

What a huge bullshit we never liked it and will like it. But they want us we pretend we like it.

This entire plot also shows how LITTLE men care about consent, for anyone. It doesn't matter that the man in the coma never consented, it doesn't matter that Lucy was coerced into spending time with the brother, it doesn't matter if she doesn't consent to the coworkers pushing boundaries, consent could not be farther away from the point in every single scene.

The looking to a man to figure out what to do (what do I do now??) is such BS I'm glad Reese Witherspoon called it out so publicly. If there's a crisis, I'm going with my gut or looking to other women. That is absolutely the projection of male writers and it's crazy how much it persists! Ps: your commentary during the slipping on ice scene literally had me laughing out loud. That was true cinema. Great job Mel!

It’s always about power dynamics. Belittle the woman so she feels „smaller“ and to be so lucky to find a man who wants her besides because without performing for a man to win him over to feel wholesome.
I always shaking my head when I saw women fighting over men’s attention I am like no thank you not doing that.
The fact that the movie it’s all about that she waits for a man and before her life is miserable and she is a miserable person and all her purpose in life is preparing her so a man chooses her. Ok alright no thank you. It’s laughable really.
I just have flashbacks when I was 18 and women around me started desperately chasing after men and seeking for their attention and were stressed all the time in keeping a men because they are scared running out of time… meanwhile me had the most adventures life and traveling Europe and chasing after dreams…

I think I gave up watching TV and movies just before the lock downs in 2020. It just felt like social programming, and this weird disassociating between reality and how human behavior "should be". Now, when someone uses pop culture entertainment as an anecdote to their argument, I know they are delusional and haven't "touched grass" enough to have actual evidence to support their claims. Social media and entertainment, has truly wrecked community and real life connections. Like, people can't even behave civil at the grocery store, or in public transit. Movies were supposed to be entertainment; an escape...now it's used an example for human conditioning... freaky.

I remember seeing this movie when I was little and hearing about it beforehand as a favorite movie--I feel like it did really well back then..? But when I saw it myself, I was like, THAT was it? I prefer being a realist. It keeps me sane and more logical.
I was angry today when I saw an article popping up „how to put the rose colour glasses on to keep a relationship alive“
They should have better written as a headliner „how do I fool myself into staying in a poor relationship which drains me instead of uplifting me“
Their pro. Paganda is really aggressive. I recieve so many advertisements from dating sites on UA-cam where women talk about how amazing and how much they found a real relationship and true love. Notice the wording? „Real“ and „true“…. And with happy smiling faces ok…

I ma going to bet the men wiritng this movie were like "Bah, a rom com movie for women, easy money and we don't have to make effort!" while they laugh their way to the box office because they take advantage of the greatest tool in the patriarchy arsenal: Lowering expectations.
By ensuring every rom com is terrible and mysoginistic, you ensure taht it creates that standard for teh genre, and so, you don't need to do effort and you can get away with a bad movie with a bad gimmick and bad writing as long as you get pretty and young women to reinforce the patriarchal methods int eh grand screen. Just like men's movies are always about power fantasies, women's movies written by men are about glorifying sacrifice and martyr fantasies instead.

Melanie, i haven't seen 'While You Were Sleeping' but what i gather from the synopsis revealed here in your video, it strikes me as a bad rip-off of the french gem of a french film: Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain. But Hollywoodized and in a bad way. I have some issues with Amelie Poulain as well, but it's nuanced enough that it provides a much richer take on Men/Women dynamics. But Amelie also has a thing with travel and maps, and daddy-issues, and avoidant behaviour, but she's more complicated of a character, as is Nino, her love-interest in the film ,that this weird American version of this story-type is astounding in its terribleness

I saw "as good as it gets" when i was relatively young, and was baffled that helen hunt's character ends up with jack nicholson's. He was such a jerk and it made zero sense. I'm sure it would make even less sense now! These movies are all SO bad!

Reading the plot synopsis, it all comes back. She decides to settle for him because her mom tells her to, hence the title! She makes him "want to be a better man" but he does absolutely nothing to improve her life which doesn't also make his life easier. He's also a mean jerk throughout. But she can change him! Ew ew ew, absolutely not doing that anymore.

It feels like they made the MARK the lead in the boys game...like her boss allowed her in and she can't take the heat of the manipulation or something, lmfaoo.
Guys also force info out of other guys by making jokes about their relationships (you have to have sex to get pregnant)- I am so relieved to know this was, ahem, 'flipped' for a female lead.

OMG, this is like a bad, gender-swapped Forrest Gump. (And that wasn't such a hot movie for me, either.)

I agree often relationships to us is never about us… it’s about their ego or crushing some good spirits and souls with hope ….
