      I saw this tool and thank you for the info. The blade thing is a deal breaker for me. As a handyman, I need to have availability of supplies. Would have to pass if it needs special blades. Great idea, absolutely but when it comes to the blade, I will deal with what I'm used to. Thank you.

    This is great. Informative, concise. I usually find the old-school one works most efficiently, probably because there's a bit of flex in the blade & you can use a standard blade. Thank you.

    It's surprisingly clever, but kind of a Frankenstein's monster. It's big and chunky, and probably clumsy (the knife, not me). I find that knife blades last a long time, but scraping really takes it's toll. That's why I like cheap straight razor blades for scraping. Now show me some more of that tight little Milwaukee Fastback.

    I agree, the availability of the blades is an issue but a bigger issue is the blade does not stay secure in place. It falls out a lot. The mechanism that holds it in needs to be better engineered to keep that blade in place.

    I’m ok with the blade situation, the angle of attack with the scraper is a little limited. The small $5 scrapers are great and weigh nothing, but I’ve broken several because they are a little weak. fastback is a legend for a reason. The toughbuilt adds a heft to the scraper that can’t be matched. It’s great for downward press cuts. I love them all equally, unlike my children

    Depends on your purpose I bought one yesterday, had to cut scrape and clean off silicone 60m of it. Having the one tool was awesome... the cost difference is nothing, but I did buy a 30 pack of blades. Like any other product including saws, I always buy 1 or 2 spare blades as the product may not be available in that shop next week if they don't sell enough.

    I'll stick to the Milwaukee fastback and the retractable scraper because its actually more compact and lighter on the belt/pouch/pocket. Fastback is surprisingly durable for a folding knife, so much that i don't used my bulky Stanley knife anymore. Honestly, besides windows/mirrors/countertops/chaulking, I'd just use a regular scraper so I don't waste blades.

    In maintenance here... Having scraped a ton of caulk and debris off of tubs, sinks, vanities, etc... I think I agree with most others, it's the angle of attack here that's the main drawback. But, I'd still give it a shot to see how it stands up over time with a lot of scraping. I can't tell you how many little handles I've bent or broken with the cheap flat scrapers.

    I just bought the tool just because I needed another utility knife, thought it was a cool idea and I'm pissed off at home depot. I think it will be best as a glass scraping tool. Don't like it being blade specific and I wish it had blade storage in the handle, but overall what a cool idea. I have the 6 in one fastback but this is even more versatile. It will find a spot in my tool bag. Home depot sucks with the self checkout, guess they think they are Wal-Mart. Lowes customer service is definitely better!!!

    Most informative and honest review i've see about the toughbuilt scrapper utility knife and you even tested the tool for what it was intended for.
    But judging from your review it seems that this tool is not worth the price other types of utility knife might work better as utility knife + scapper combo like Snap-Off utility knife you just need to buy stainless steel blade or solid blades because both baldes can be bent further before they break.

  • @yeliab814
    @yeliab814 3 роки тому +2

    Spot on with the points you raise - i’d have bought this before realizing either of the proprietary blades , and the angle of attack problem-both deal killers for me.
    The problem I have with the cheap ones is they lock the blades poorly -both in and out and side to side. I suspect this may be partially due to the ever cheaper quality Chinese blades, that get thinner and thinner by the order.. I need a tool that has adapted to this reality.
    I guess the most obvious take away from your review is there is a HUGE opportunity for someone to design and offer a product which uses standard utility blades in this switchable configuration, in a lower profile and narrower mechanical design. Seems totally feasible. Such a scraper, with its stiffer blade compared to a razor blade based scraper, would often be a great alternative to the dedicated wall scraper with its expensive blades and all..

    Yes, the blade thing is definitely a deal breaker for me. Even though I live about 5 minutes from one lowes and 10 minutes from another lowes, I think that not fitting the standard blade is really a bad design. • @EverydayHomeRepairs
      @EverydayHomeRepairs  3 роки тому +2

    I actually got this before I knew about the proprietary blades and that was a bit annoying. I will also say that I only used this for a few weeks and I think something came out of it. If I had to guess it was probably the spring as I've heard others say. I got it for about $17 and I think that's about how much its worth. • @DaddyBeanDaddyBean

    All too often, when a product tries to combine two products into one, they end up with an inferior version of both. (The classic example is a while back, there was a trend of 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner products, which were pretty bad at both jobs.) The only functional advantage this tool has - apart from the cool fidget-spinner aspect - is you can carry one tool instead of two... but for items as small & light as a utility knife & standard razor scraper, combining them isn't much of an advantage. Add in the inferior functionality in both utility-knife mode (huge handle, only one blade position) and razor-scraper mode (as explained int the video) and it's already a "pass" for me. With the limited availability of proprietary, expensive blades, it's a hard pass.

      For Tapcons I always carried my hammer drill with a masonry drill bit (sized appropriately for Tapcon screw) and my impact driver with a nut driver bit. That way I could predrill and then drive the Tapcon with the impact driver without switching between the drill bit and nut driver bit each time. If you do use the drill for both you do not need the hammer setting to drive in the Tapcon.

      I am sure there is some of that and my big thing is I would hate to run out and have a Lowe's 1 hour away with the proprietary blades and a ACE 5 mins away where I could pick up standard blades.

      @@EverydayHomeRepairs I understand that but for many people visiting Lowes can involve less travel. Sure, if one isn't close by, then buying one of these cutters wouldn't make much sense but I doubt this is the case for many people in the comments that hate the idea of proprietary accessories on a small scale but have no issues when it comes to battery platforms as I said.

      @@jrworthy Forget about the proprietary blades if you watch the video you can see that this tool is not even that good as a scraper.
      Snap-off utility knife with solid blade or stainless steel blade might work better as knife + scraper combo because it has longer blade and more flexible.
      And i don't think you can use proprietary battery as comparison with proprietary blades because you can recharge the battery so you don't need to buy the replacement batteries very often.
      Most people who willing to use power tool with proprietary batteries/accessories usually because the tool works better that other or at least it's the best tool for the price.
      While this Toughbuilt works just like a regular knife and isn't very good as a scraper you'll need a lot of spare blades because using utility blade as a scraper will dull the blade pretty quickly and the lack of spare blade storage makes it even worst.
      So people's complaints in the comments about the proprietary blade are perfectly reasonable.

    I just purchased this and noticed it needs special blades. Absolute dealbreaker for such a cool tool. Ill be returning it in the morning. Huge fail by tough built IMO.

      Yeah, I see why they had to do it but that is a pretty tough pill to swallow.

    Proprietary blades?!? Sorry, not a chance in hell.

      Yeah, I understand they needed the additional slot cut out to hold the blade during scraping but I think it limits the number of buyers to about 1 in 10 if they were able to somehow use standard blades.

    It is a really cool design... But it doesn't hold up to real use. If you're a diy'r with light use then maybe. I'm a drywall contractor and picked it up because of it's scraper ability.... It lasted me about an 2 hours before the entire function got jammed and wouldn't close or switch positions. Within those 2 hours the blade actually fell out on me 2 TIMES! Which is very dangerous while you're cutting in to something. Nice idea but I would highly suggest staying away from this one!
