Old MK was amazing. Back in the day you'd stand in a crowd around the MK machine at the arcade. If you were lucky the guys playing knew combos and could pull off fatalities. Access to the internet was limited, i remember me and a friend doing his Older brother's chores so he would teach us how to bicycle kick with Lu Kang. Good times man

The kids would give me their money and say "Finish it with Scorpion!" or "Finish it with Sonya!". I'd play for free, finish the game on the hardest setting, any character, back to back flawless fatalities. Sometimes new people who didn't know me would put their money and play me. Never even close to beating me. But there was ONE guy, he was about 17-18 much older than me. A guy with glasses and he sometimes came to the arcade in a group after his college day was over. If I was there, playing MK, he'd look around and see me and just a huge smile would appear on his face and he'd come over and be like "Hey man! I'm SO glad you're here!" and he'd put 10-20 credits into the machine and we'd play back to back games for up to two hours. A HUGE crowd would gather round, getting behind the games. Even the owner would come over and watch. Thing is, he was so good, it was sickening. Nobody else could even come close to taking a round off me, but this guy won 8 games out of 10. He really understood the game. Sick player. Those few matches when I would win, they would be right down to the final second, the final hit point of health, true battles where it came down the wire. To beat him I'd have to do something extraordinary, like uppercut him in the middle of his raiden dash, or predict his jump timing and intercept it with a scorpion lane shift into perfect grapple. But whenever I did win, he'd stop and turn to me and say "WOW man! That was AMAZING! Excellent!" and I'd feel great, like I just beat Mike Tyson. I was only 11 or 12. Great times.

I'd been playing MK since the first cab arrived in my town. He was just better, one of those elites like todays top eSports players. Reaction times, motor skills and intelligence combined. Glad we existed at the same arcade at the same time though with the perfect game - those crowds of kids all watching us for hours were awesome!

What's amazing about the old school "visuals" is that everyone is crudely dressed. Raiden/Scorpion/Johnny Cage etc. are all basic looking, yet their actions are BRUTAL. Raiden is in a simple attire but when he electrocutes his opponent the contrast between his modest appearance vs. his devastating electrocution is TERRIFYING. Scorpion is a basic yellow ninja but when the lights go out the fires of hell are TRULY displayed. Those opponents who are more extravagantly dressed are deservedly extravagant. Shao Khan of course must be dressed like an absolute emperor. When he shows up looking the way he does with his hammer in front of all these basic looking fighters it actually hits. In the new games every character is Shao Khan and it dulls everything out.
Miss this old school feel. 😔 Raiden didn't have to do a brutality on the Dragon 🐉 Legend Bruce Lee. That was f'd up. 🤘😃 All in all, this is soooo dope!

i see you're playing a heavily nerfed AI. good choice. the original AI was pretty ridiculous. perfect blocking in the middle of your attacks, throwing in the middle getting punched (AI had invincibility frames if you didnt know) Goro had boss armor, and would spam that unblockable jump. glad to see you're playing a way more balanced version.
