Nice TV, hopefully you'll be able to resurrect it. I just finished a LCD TV repair for someone. Needed to replace the motherboard because the Tuner was intermitent on the old board, and guess what, you can't find anymore or anywhere a replacement tuner.... planed obsolescence people! Keep the vintage TV's alive because they stand for quality and care. Cheers :)
Years ago when I was repairing TV for a living I had an insurance adjuster tell me that the most likely part of the TV to cause a fire was the AC interlock on the back. I've seen some pretty badly melted and charred cords.
We had a 1958 Silvertone 19" B&W with a handle and dials mounted on the side. It also was an all metal case except for the back panel. It generated a lot of heat when operating for hours. So much so, it could add a few degrees to our small LR in the winter months. Like the one shown I do not recall whether it had a built in antenna or not. Certainly not a telescoping one which Sears put on later years models.
Very interesting, Admiral was made in Brazil too but it was not considered reliable TVs sets however the air condiotioners made here by Admiral were very good.
That's an awesome 50's set, and I'm looking forward to the next installment. I'm surprised the flyback didn't arc to the case with the tire missing....I imagine you'll silicone that.
Only thing of mine that ever had asbestos in it was a very old radiant heater I used for defrosting stuff; it was used as the electrical insulation right behind the ceramic heating element bobbin which glowed red hot in use. I kept it in there, knowing that it probably wouldn't do anything as long as it wasn't opened again.
I'm writing to you because my comment below is all screwed up and for some odd reason my phone it's not letting me delete just for the record I think you're a nut and the genius at the same time look forward many more of your videos you have a great day my friend take care
this set, was also sold under the Hotpoint name, had one,, looked like its twin, tough sets, I remember ours rolling from one side of my Fathers 57 buick to the other, and other than a dent,, worked for 15 more years,,
Wow your good I love old TVs but mine was black and silver and it had the turn button at the front for the tune contrast and volume but I do live in England so the plugs are different we have 3 pin plugs great video tho can't wait for part two xxx
I see that you posted this years ago, but I'm curious if you created a follow up video or continued the restoration in any capacity. I just acquired one of these sets and enjoyed watching your breakdown here. Thanks!
Shang, I've got a question fer U, OM. When I was a kid and re-capped my Hallicrafters SX-25 receiver, I replaced all the caps at once. One of the caps turned out to be defective or I made a wiring mistake, I can't remember. I then had one hell of a time getting it working again. So ever since then, I've always replaced the caps one at a time and re-checked the operation of the unit after each one. Your thoughts?
+William Crowell Exactly the way you should. I often compare them on the cap tester to verify still changing them one at a time but several between power ups.
+William Crowell I have made a habit of running all my new capacitors through the bridge before putting them in a radio or TV, I got burned on some NOS caps a few years ago so I just test them all out of habit so I don't have to do things twice. Sometimes you can replace caps one at a time and test the set after each, but in some cases it's just not feasible. Like in one radio I worked on most of the capacitors and resistors are installed on hand wired circuit boards under the chassis, so you have to disconnect each board before you pull them out and replace the components mounted to them. However I overhauled one board at a time, and before I did I made detailed diagrams of where every capacitor, resistor, and wire went so I would not loose track. It was a Roger model Ten-60 from 1935-36, think of an RCA model 140 or G.E K80 only with no diagrams of the boards, plus rubber covered wire, and you will get the picture.
What did you do about that radius arm on your Exploder? My buddy had a 96' Explorer that he A B U S E D for 7 years and just over 300000 miles. That thing never broke and was running fine when he sold it. His 95' Chrysler Concorde on the other hand was a nightmare, fast, but a nightmare.
Those repair facilities that make them kind of remarks should go out of business. I ran an Atwater Kent radio for years with only changing one capacitor. The transformer needed replaced because the windings were bare. The radio still picked up stations from all over the USA. Sure beat the all American five radios.the paper capacitors had wax but nothing leaked out. At that time the radio was over 40 years old. 73
Bob Andersen will like this video, he likes Admirals. No, it is not likely to burn your house down, anymore then an AA5 will, though the selenium rectifiers in the voltage doubler will make a good stink bomb should the filter caps short out.
he is using a digital box, that is connected directly into the tv, if the tv was functioning correctly there would be no snow, as the signal from the converter box is connected directly.
ua-cam.com/video/JR_mEQgGXFs/v-deo.html It has the same title, but says part 2 in the description, actually have not watched it yet, found part 2 before i found this one.
Shambo can we PLEASE fire up the Russian TV? I don't mind if it's pay per view. We'll pay for that one? Loved this vid tho buddy. Thanks for the hard work. We love your vids!!! Steven from nc
I figured you losers were into the badass tv I am talking about. If you aren't sure whAt I'm talking about then you aren't shangoites. Just sub to him like and go away. :) Damnit. I'm moving to Upper Volta next month and they don't have YT Shango. I guess I'll never see the badass Russian TV get the Shango AC ram.
I'm not sure but ,if anyone else wants to uncover tc electronic repair try Saankramer Electronic Magazine System ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my cousin got cool results with it.
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else is searching for computer pc repair try Saankramer Electronic Magazine System (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my buddy got great success with it.
Built to last. My dad still had our first color TV. It worked over fifty five years old
I've been watching your videos for the last several days and really enjoying them. Thanks for posting these. It's been great fun and very educational.
We had several tv sets similar to that when I was a kid.
I watch a lot of your videos you are very smart I could neaver repair a tv

An impressive mid century beauty!

That 833 on the dual diode was probably the date code. 33rd week of 1958 maybe?
Dum Barton I also saw a 20th week of 1958, so I agree.
We had one when I was a kid!
Beautiful tv!!

That really is a beautiful TV!
I like the american Style metal Cabinets, never seen this before in Germany.

shango66 I absolutely love your videos.
how old are you and plesse tell me how long you've been into tvs.
thanks
30 years
Why dont you use the oscope to check those patterns on the sams????
Shango, at 12:40, what type of modern Schottky diodes do you put in place of the phase detector double diode?
Cool tv
I've been looking a tv like that
I've seen those models before. That is considered a "portable" Television, and I guess for it's time it was.
Well no reception is due to the lack of an ntsc broadcast as of mid 2009 as it is all ota tv via atsc nowdays
Ha a company i used to work for serviced the warehouse that made thos modulators here in jersey.
Where did that Blonder-Tongue exciter come from?
do you still work on these for customers? I'd love to have one recapped. I know just enough about restoring them to burn my house down hahaha.
Where can I acquire hv putty for the horrible headache inducing flyback noise?

Are you actually a MOCA member or did you just get that Zenith high voltage meter second hand?
Bob Andersen will like this video, he likes Admirals. No, it is not likely to burn your house down, anymore then an AA5 will, though the selenium rectifiers in the voltage doubler will make a good stink bomb should the filter caps short out.
que legal
lol 3 resistors twisted together and no solder
Didn't they shut off analog transmission years ago? Snow on the screen wouldn't be surprising then..
he is using a digital box, that is connected directly into the tv, if the tv was functioning correctly there would be no snow, as the signal from the converter box is connected directly.
although the correct term is ATSC tuner, as its just a box that works with ATSC channels, but has RF outputs
what happened to part 2
ua-cam.com/video/JR_mEQgGXFs/v-deo.html It has the same title, but says part 2 in the description, actually have not watched it yet, found part 2 before i found this one.
Why does the schematic say 'do not measure' on certain nets?
To keep your test meter from getting fried.
Hello I have question please
Which website do you use for Tv schematic
The admiral is shocking’’’’if you catch my drift
I bet it says on the back of the set made in U.S.A..
What's with the "do not measure" plate annotations on the schematic?
Ah, thanks.
Very high voltage peak, it'll make most instruments go bang.
6:39 - It has at least two ants
HA i remember that thread.....
Well Shango you must excuse me for being dumb but I'm still trying to figure out what EOL means enlighten me please
End Of the Line

It'll Probly Last For A While
Then After That'll Take A Poop I
