As a Canadian I love Mariana's Trench I've seen them perform this life. Masterpiece Theatre is their first concept album which was all based of the basis of living in a show. Your life is a show. There is Masterpiece Theatre I, II, and III. The third is my favourite, but it combines the entire album in different parts of the song, so it's like a giant medley of the songs. Trench is amazing and Josh's voice revivals Freddy Mercury's in range!
I always heard this song as two people in the public eye trying to hide a relationship, or trying to avoid rumors of a relationship. But the singer realizes that by hiding this relationship he has begun hiding who he truly is and this is painful for him, but he continues to do it to protect the other person. That's just my idea though.
The song (and parts of the whole album, Masterpiece Theatre) is about Josh talking about the music industry and how suffocating it is. He doesn’t want to conform to their wants and talks about the struggles and horrors of how a person loses themselves by giving themselves to that industry and their fans is extremely dangerous. There is elements of romance and relationships throughout the song and album that are in relation to Josh’s Girlfriend now Wife, but songs like Lover Dearest talk about his addiction to heroin. The “You're beautiful, can I hide in you awhile?” has double meaning of Josh seeking comfort with his gf and him finding confinement in his aforementioned addiction to help deal with his problems.
For the part you thought sounded like a Christmas carol is actually a nod to the beginning of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen since both are similar in style.

He’s singing about heroin addiction. This entire album is about that.
