I owned an M340 touring for 4 years and switched to an M3 touring in April 2024. What I can say is that, yes, the m3 is much faster, but the M340 was already fast enough, even from the factory. The M340 is more comfortable, uses much less fuel and can have options that the M3 touring doesn't (sunroof, towing hook). The M3 is noisier, but the sound of the B58 is better to my ears. It's only when you switch to attack mode that the difference is clear in favor of the M3. There's also the beastly look of the M3 that speaks in its favor, even if you might prefer the classy sporty look of a m340. So why did I switch? Certainly not for rational reasons, but because I fell in love with the M3 touring.
