I would love for them to do a remake and really dive into the back stories of the group and all the drama in Motown although no one will ever do David ruffin better than Leon 🤣

Indeed, a project like this could lay the groundwork for other Motown acts like the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, ect. But you're right, Leon has solidified his role as David "Ain't nobody come to see you Otis" Ruffin 😂😂😂

I love the movie and grew up watching it and without it, I probably wouldn't have known who they were and their great music, plus being an old soul. But to keep it, now that I watch it today, I kinda cringe and have mix feelings about the mini series because of the facts I know now about the real Temptations. Especially with Paul's situation and the betrayal of David Ruffin. In my opinion, Leon indeed do a helluva job being David but the way they written his character was wrong. They made him look like a villain when in reality, he was human who been through trauma, which is another thing the movie didn't touch on. With Paul, they completely dismissed his sickle cell diease, which is very painful, and depression that led to him drinking from all the stress on the road. Also, Dennis was still alive when this was made, they could've asked for his input on the movie but they didn't. They need to make a real true story about 5 southern men coming to Detroit and becoming what they are known as today, the Temptations. Needs to be 100% true so fans know the true story from all of their prospective. Not just one man. There's more to it I have to say about the movie but this summed it all in this great video. I'm glad someone is finally making it known that the movie is not 100% all true.

I love your ideas and for the most part I agree with you. One thing I would add (if I may) is more development of Richard Street's involvement with the group. It was Richard who sang lead on the Otis Williams and The Distants song "Come On" and was one of the 5 Temps (the others were Otis, Melvin, Ron, and Terry) who has over 20 years with the group. I would like to see more of his perspective in relation to the group. I would also like to see something on the one Temp that is never talked about and that is Rickey Owens. I would like to see something that explains why his tenure with the group was only a few weeks. One of the things that bugged me most about the mini series is the way they had Melvin die. Melvin did not die in a wheelchair going to get some short ribs out of his mother's oven. I would change that as well, but I would like to see your remake.

Thanks for checking out my video and I agree that more development with Richard Street and some of the other lesser known Temptations would have made the difference, especially with the series being titled The Temptations and not Otis n Friends.

That was a super odd choice to have Melvin die somewhere between Mama Rose's dining room and the kitchen when he died in the hospital. In some respects, I understand wanting a scene with Otis, Melvin, and Mama Rose at the end to remind us of the beginning, the way Otis and Melvin met and to track the group forward through Mama Rose's meals as a way of incorporating Eddie's death as well. They could have done that with a scene in the hospital though.
Richard wrote an autobiography and the overall impression to take away from his Temptations experience is that Otis treated him and the others like trash, profiting from their hard labor while paying them peanuts by comparison.
I don't think much needs to be said about Ricky Owens' tenure with the group because it was so very brief; he doesn't appear on any recordings and apparently was not up to the task of being a Temptation -- he botched the words to "Just My Imagination" during a live performance.

I really dug this video well done. As much as I agree with you and would love this, I think that the issues with your remake would be the issue with the original miniseries in that it's coming from the perspective of one Temptation. I think what made the New Edition biopic so great and at the level of The Temptations or American dream was that you had input from the 7 key players of that group working with the writers, directors, and working with the actors that played them and their fellow group mates. With all the key players in the Tempts gone besides Otis (and Ron Tyson depending on how deep in the story you wanna go) I'm not sure you could get the level of authenticity your idea needs and deserves.

    • @StayTunedReviews

Very true! I think creative liberties would have to be taken for scenes featuring events that only happened between the Temptation members, but I think that a full on series would be better at telling a more historically accurate story than we got in the miniseries.

I loved the movie but I agree with your points. A treatment similar to New Edition's is a great idea.
You do have to bear in mind it was based on just Otis' POV. THAT'S why it would be skewed.
Heartily agree with treatment of deaths and struggles esp Paul who suffered from sickle-cell anaemia - main reason he drank was to numb the intense pain. Beyond pointing out it was root of his physical pain, there was a missed opportunity to sensitize people to this condition.
I also really think it was unfair that the "Five Heartbeats" was treated so shabbily vs. Temps movie that built upon it and reaped rewards. Even Leon said so in a recent interview. And yes, who else but Leon could play Ruffin?

  • @kissradio7575

Very nice video and very good voice. From someone who has interviewed Otis, Melvin, Dennis, and several of the Temptations I will give my perspective. I see in the comments that everyone wants to discount Otis's involvement (and it was based on HIS book) and give Richard's involvement and they should do this ..... and they should do that..... Nah ya'll. It doesn't work that way. You just don't jump up and do a movie or a series. Yes, Suzanne De Passe was the one that spearheaded the first one and she had an interest in and a special love for Motown. If you have a second one - what production company is going to take this project on? The family of David Ruffin threaten to sue to stop the production of the first one so this second time around you will HAVE to have their input. In fact, several family members bought lawsuits against the production company. Was it valid? I don't know but there is no way that a production company is going to take on that with so many of the members that have now gone since the original mini-series. Motown does not own the name of the Temptations. Otis does. Good luck getting him to sign off on some other perspective. There were even problems with the shooting of the location. Detroit residents vent anger about the selection of Pittsburgh as a location. De Passe told reporters that Pittsburgh was chosen to stand in for Detroit because of her experience in 1992 filming ABC's miniseries about the Jackson family here. You have to write and get a script Approved. You have time restraints. So instead of a "movie" are you going to do a "series"? Is there enough of an audience to support those kinds of ratings? People in the comments - yes you are entitled to your own opinion but you are not entitled to your own facts. This is a business first and before anything is even started filming there are too many legal hurdles to overcome. Otis Williams' ex-wife Josephine, Melvin Franklin's mother Rose, and David Ruffin's family, filed suit against Williams, Motown, De Passe Entertainment, Hallmark Entertainment, and NBC for use of their likenesses in the film, defamation of character, and emotional distress. The plaintiffs claimed that they and/or their relatives and certain events were portrayed inaccurately. The judges ruled in favor of the defendants. The plaintiffs appealed but the original ruling was upheld. Otis Williams later stated that while his book was the source material for the film, he did not have control over the making of the film. There is a lot of stuff the "comment crowd doesn't know" For example, some of the cast members did their own singing for their characters. Leon, however, did not provide the voice for David Ruffin. His singing was done by Louis Price, a former member of the Temptations who sang with them in the 70s. The only time Leon's singing voice can be heard was in the scene where Otis and Melvin visit David's apartment to warn him. Many "fans" don't know that David Ruffin performed with The Temptations on multiple occasions before eventually joining the group in 1964. At times, he would even fill in as a drummer for the group's sets. It would be nice to see a "series" of an update of the group but in 2023 unless its profitable and can be signed off by a bean counter executive I don't see it. And of course, you will get the "comment crowd" that will start off with "I feel that"...... and at the end of the day my opinion doesn't matter or their opinion doesn't matter. We can express it and its fun to "what if" but when it comes to showing business it all comes down 95% business and 5% show. Most people have never even promoted a concert much less a show. Do that first and you will see how show business starts to work. Again Great video and you did a great job. I enjoyed it. Keep up the good content.

I appreciate your insight and that you checked out my video! My knowledge of how shows/movies that are based on real people/events get made is extremely limited, but I definitely thought that the chances of this series getting made was all but impossible. I respect Otis for his contributions to music and all he's done for the group. It's just a pet peeve of mine when we get a mini series like this where theres an amazing group of actors, musicians and people working on the set design, but the storytelling keeps the overall viewing experience from being amazing for viewers like me. I did another unpopular opinion video on the Jackson 5 An American Dream series and I would like to know your opinion on that too!

Im glad they only tributed the death if Melvin. Which was basically a tribute to the original five. It would have been tiresome and redundant to have a tribute david, and a tribute to eddie and a tribute to paul and then a tribute to melvin. And the story is told through Otis's eyes, who despite the lack of talent, was the most mature member based on this series. Of course some things were changed and or left out. The mini series can't satisfy everybody and diving into the real story adds interest and mystic to the group.

The New Edition story worked well as a three-parter because New Edition is six people. The Temptations are very different with at least twenty-seven members. It would be cumbersome trying to tell the story of so many people and the ways in which each person left the group (and in some cases returned only to leave again, as with Dennis Edwards and Ali-Ollie Woodson). Whereas the New Edition story was truly the story of New Edition from the perspective of all six members, the Temptations movie was based solely on Otis Williams' autobiography, his experiences. As such, the film is biased toward his recollections and perspectives, which might explain the deficiencies you found in the latter parts of the movie.

I would rather see…a movie more about Paul, Eddie and the Supremes. Even a look at David…
Especially since Paul and Eddie carried the group until David came through.
Also. There’s an emotional sense that we missed on David’s behalf. They made David out to be a bad guy and that’s really not the story.

They put to much on Otis Williams. Yes a founding member but the one, the only one with very little talent. They focused to much on him but I get it. He was the main consultant of the film and other original members were already deceased and not around to contradict Otis's accounts that made it seem as if he was the main guy of the group even though he didn't sing much.

I wouldn't say Otis has "very little talent", not at all. He is not lead singer nor has he ever tried to be, but he certainly can sing and harmonize. His actual talent is acting as de facto manager for the group. Without Otis, the Temptations would have fallen to the wayside long ago as members left the group. It wasn't Motown recruiting replacements when guys left or were voted out. It was group members led by Otis.

It wasn't necessarily a mistake to leave out the things issues or events leading up to some of the deaths and Ruffins Crack addiction etc...I believe it was damn near impossible to cover everything as there were probably budget concerns and personal opinions that had an influence. For instance if you had made this first series" there'd be someone else having different ideas and issues themselves. So I'm just gonna cherish this production for its positive impact and accomplishments. I was too young when they were hot" born in 61" but am #8 0f 9 children" So I was blessed to have been exposed to many different genres of music. I can remember when I was like 5 or 6 abd a couple of my brothers and sisters trying to do the Temps moves.....but haha" White people can't dance! Very true! I think it was impossible to create a Temptations movie or series that would have made 100% of people happy. And I'm right there with you on the production for the series. When I first saw it, I thought it was one of the best limited series ever. It wasn't until I got older and heard all of the interesting stories that were left outta the series is when I began to wonder why couldn't we as fans get a full meal (series with indepth storytelling) instead of an appetizer (30 years of story wrapped into a 3 hour movie).
