We all love animated films right? They’re not only fun but full of memorable characters and most importantly, breathtaking animations.They help take us to new worlds or to see our world in a different light. But despite the attention to detail that goes into them, mistakes still happen. Take Disney’s Frozen, which has it’s fair share of mistakes but the one we’re talking about this time focuses on a certain snowman named Marshmallow. Other Disney and Pixar films have made mistakes, such as Finding Dory, Big Hero 6, Zootopia and Moana. They all look gorgeous but still have something that draws us out a bit. But it’s not all Disney and it’s not all for kids. Batman: The Killing Joke is definitely not for kids but still remains one of the most talked about and polarizing films of that year. One animation mistake can be found during one such scene that divided fans. Other films include the return of Spongebob Squarepants to the big screen and of course, the Minions, who are always up to no good it seems. Luckily for them, this mistake actually has nothing to do with them specifically so they’re off the hook this time. The Peanuts Movie saw the return of Charlie Brown and Snoopy to the big screen yet despite it’s unique and charming animation style, was also the victim of some animation mistakes. Cars 3 raced into cinemas so we looked back at the first Cars, which had an usual cow tipping scene which caused the film one of its biggest mistakes.

1:34 I don't know... maybe Judy moved her alarm clock? There's a whole day between the two sequences. You missed the obvious one in that scene, though: the amazing changing top when she's microwaving her carrot.
She probably changed while it's cooking.
Or when her eye color changes in the movie right around the 2nd or 3rd encounter with Nick

In Hercules, the titans break loose from their cell, walk in a line in the opposite direction of Olympus, you'll notice the cyclops is missing from the shot.
Also, in Zootopia, when Judy is watching her carrots in the microwave, she is wearing a different shirt then it cuts back to her uniform

The most troublesome mistake for me was the one where Elsa literally flipped her hair through her shoulder. But... I wish I could do that..........
The technology is more to blame than the animator with this one. One con of 3D animation over 2D is that the animation program used (any 3D animation program; they all function similarly) will "fill in the blanks" between the key poses that the animator has defined (in spline mode; blocking shows only the defined keyframes, just like 2D animation). This can lead to all kinds of weird-ass problems like a character's hand rotating 360 degrees or objects clipping through each other.
I can't remember what exactly the problem was with Elsa's braid in this shot, but the program kept wanting the braid to clip through Elsa's shoulder and the animator had a hell of a time getting it to do what he wanted.
It might have been that there weren't enough frames between her braid being behind her shoulder and being in front of her shoulder, so the program kept wanting the braid to simply move straight through her shoulder regardless of the fact that the animator added inbetweens to scoop the braid up and over. This is just my guess, though.
That would drive me crazy too, but I've never really seen the movie.
I watched it once with my 6 year old cousin because we were on vacation together.
Other than that I've never touched it...

Weird. To me, it looks like her braid bounces, from behind her arm, over the arm and down in front. Doesn't look like a mistake at all. But if the animators are saying it was, I guess it was. I still can't see it that way!

In Hotel Transylvania 2, the vampires couldn’t show up in pictures, but in the video chat, the vampires could see each other through the camera. Mavis also had a picture on her contact picture.
99.9% of these "mistakes" are made on purpose. They are made to make sure every frame in an animation is as perfect as it could be. You move elements in scenes just to create better composition in every frame. It's a bit "lazy" way of creating every 3D scene for animation, but it's hyper production, so it's ok. Plus, it's animation people! It's a medium that lets you play in ways real life can't. So let it go and enjoy the work these creative hard working people do.

I love how nobody even notices these mistakes when watching the movies.
I think it's important to notice these things and keep them in mind, if only to keep animators on their toes, but I'm glad you reiterated that we don't fault the animators for these little mix ups. Animating an entire movie cannot be easy, especially in Zootopia's case. They had to draw each individual hair on each mammal in the movie, even ones that only showed up for a few seconds, and don't even get me started on the detail work that had to go into the reptiles/non furry animals.

Alex Dodge hand drawn means drawing with your physical hand. Computer animated mean drawn virtually, which is what most of today's films are.

You're right, Nathan.. and these mistakes are not animator's fault.. actually in these kind of budgets, the task of an animator is restrict to characters and moving objects.. i mean, they don't compose sets..

A mistake would be, if in one Scene the fireplace is on the left, in the next Scene on the right side of the Room. That would be a mistake, cauz a fireplace isn't moveable.

They almost certainly have to be deliberate. You can play with Pixar's Renderman and you'll see how a lot of this works. You don't do things from scratch for each frame. You model the whole room, corridor, etc, the computer only looks at what can be seen, and the animator moves everything that moves. Only shifting from one scene to another should ever produce weirdness.

The frozen one wasn’t an error...when marshmallow knocked them against the mountain you can see they dropped heir weapons in front of them, and picked them up in the next cut.🙃

Animation is great, but it’s a medium, not a genre. Genre is about story and style. Medium is about how that story and style are transmitted.
Books, radio, theatre, live-action TV/movie, and animated TV/movie are all examples of media.
Sci-Fi, fantasy, thriller, comedy, romance and horror are all examples of genre.
(And neither list is exhaustive)

I noticed mistakes like this in animated shows in the 1980's... all my friends told me at the time that I was reading too much into it.. I kind of just forgot about it and thought it was petty to dwell on.

Non of these "errors " were the animators' fault .
When things appear and disappear that's the layout artists field and there are people who check the work after to make sure it's all good.
You should call these videos "mistakes in animated movies" , the Elsa hair thing was the only mistake made by an actual animator.
And "splice two sets together " , you clearly have no knowledge of this field.
Even the Elsa hair animation wasn't a mistake, it was intentional. Most people don't catch it unless they are trying to find something to poke at- animators cheat a lot of shots to make them look good- to animate it how it would look realistically it wouldn't flow as nice. Animators cheat physics CONSTANTLY, and intentionally break things like bones, otherwise they'd move like they were rotoscoped.

The hair clearly penetrates or "intersects" her body, and that's never something that's excepted in animation. If you watch that clip the hair moves a bit like a passing key frame was deleted.
In computer animation you make key frame poses and the computer calculates the inbetween frames.
(Sorry if you already knew that)

Ray Avid Lebon The hair animation was a mistake, among other animation horrors in the same movie. It's no secret this movie was rushed, which most certainly explains all the errors with it. The animator (or animators) must have skipped or clipped together frames, which must have made the individual animated objects to phase through. Since the hair and body objects are usually (if not always) animated separately, the frame skipping is the most obvious conclusion. Further more, to say "We couldn't do it because we couldn't make it look good" is lazy there's many methods to push hair over the shoulder without phasing through.

In the last one, you can see the guards drop the crossbows
Zootopia-the construction zone she got stuck in wasnt there in the scene before it
Finding Dory- Hank hides as a plant using the coffee pot but magically dory isnt crushed and the water is still in the pot
That second one is more likely them not wanting/needing to make that much of an effort because it didn't matter
So you clearly don't know what a "continuity error" is. And none of the 3D ones are on the ANIMATORS.
Ever used animation software? Or even just a basic rendering package. A proper one, like BMRT or Renderman, using a 3D drawing package like Blender or Rhino3D? What time have you spent on in-betweening software or solid object simulators?
My guess is not much. Otherwise, you'd know that using incorrectly versioned scene files is a continuity error.

The Elsa hair "goof" was actually intentional. If they made the hair move properly, it would have ruined the flow of the movement

I'm a small year behind, but on the Spongebob one, you're off: The "mistake" consists, if you look closely, in moving the characters around the scene, so that in the final frame you show, Mr. Squarepants is standing in the puddle of improvised inks, and not beside it.

There was actually a mistake in a Moana scene you didn't mention. During her younger years, when she finds the sea shells, there was a fish that left an imprint in the sand, then in the next shot the imprint was gone :3
