I've fished the Spalding stretch of the Welland for most of my life, it can indeed be hit and miss. Your best bet is to walk the length of it, starting where the bank begins by the coronation channel entrance. The willows and bridge just up from that often hold big perch, load of roach, always the chance of an eel. I never had much luck in the town stretch, but know it can be fruitful based on match results and other anglers. The next spot id suggest is up towards double street and and the next pedestrian bridge, and then up further by the double bridge and Londis shop. Pike can be an issue in all swims, and I've lost many a fish to pike attacks. I've also gained a few perch this way too!
Tench can be found in the drains that come off the main river and the river Glen running through Surfleet is a nice bit for all species.

@AnotherAnglingMan UK The can be had in the peak of summer too, just need to bait the swim a few hours before to actually get the fish in one area and feeding.

How did you mange not to bump fish off with that size elastic ?

Paul O'Carroll he also increased his hook size to a 14 to keep it balanced.
