Just when you thought you know so much about Western musical theory, you travel to the other side of the world and realize that you are completely lost. This is genius. R.I.P. Ravi Shankar.

The audience was so polished and well-mannered. When Pandit Ravi Shankar asked them to stop clapping and listen to the playing, they obeyed immediately. Shows how humble the two legendary musicians are on the other hand.🙂 They didn't crave attention but wanted to present what they went there for. That's why they didn't care about the applause. That kind of humility should exist in all artists.

I also was blessed to witness this pair of musical demigods perform at Sydney Town Hall, must have been 1968. They performed a similar tabla banter to this although from memory Ravi was "teasing" Alla with complex vocalisations which Alla immediately played on the tabla. An amazing concert and even more amazing ... an audience of merely around 200 affectionados. Those were the days.

Any two musicians who do what these men did,
communicating mostly through what they were improvising
and making it seem as if it was all preplanned
are ultimate masters from whom others should learn.
Their skills are rare, the products of long and diligent study.
Far too few people today care to put in the time and effort to become such living treasures.

Western Classical and its vast body of fixed work is the greatest man made creation. Even beyond it,however, is Indian classical, which is the bridge between man and God. This spontaneous improvisation is beyond man's thought-out creation. It is more like the deepest realization of music already within your soul, a realization obtained through a life time of devotion. But I agree with the sentiment of your comment. Keep listening bro! God sent us youtube!

It might be true, but it is also dying out. There are a handful musicians who reach this plane of even understanding and following along with intricate taal signatures like 2/3/2/3 or raagas, let alone performing. There is barely any audience without this type of understanding, right?

Alla Rakha's greatest contribution to Indian classical music is making tabla respectable and taking this instrument to a higher plane (earlier it always played second fiddle to the vocalist/instrumentalist). Of course his other contribution is giving the world Zakir Hussein. I have been extremely lucky to see these legends live several times - starting from 1976.

I would have to say, that these are the most accomplished musicians on the planet, and I am not an opinion to be taken lightly. I have played every form of Western music from ( yes I can read music) classical, country, rock, jazz, heavy metal, blues, funk, fusion..etc...in order to make a living. Jack of all trades, master of none, so to speak. But these guys are the undisputed masters of their trade, and I highly respect them for it. No disrespect to any other drummer, but I would rather hear Alla Rakha to any other drummer with the exception to Buddy Rich, who is my all-time favorite drummer. Buddy was THE master of jazz drumming, hands down. Of course, that's just my opinion.

They are speaking the language of God. They are messengers of the Vibration of the Universe that Created us ALL
Edit: this is a perfectly scientific way of playing. It's pure maths. And maths was considered in ancient times to be the language of the Universe and therefore of God.

Lol and few years back science don't even know the fact that you can move things with perfect sound frequencies.
And vedas also said that sound can heal your body too. But stupid scientist first claim everything crap then they realise that ayurveda is pure science. 😂🤣😎 So this music is also complete science because it came from same shastras 🙏

Forget playing the sitar, forget playing the tabla. Just to CLAP along with Ravi Shankar, just to do that CLAP accompaniment along with the tabla improvisation -. Try it! It will take a lifetime may be. The brain gets scrambled mid way through it reminding us what ordinary mortals we are :).

Great mental skill is needed in playing of all musical instruments but Mridangam and Tabla are two musical instruments which need strong mental skill, strength of body also. Above all is the rigorous practice. Great Tabla players like late Shri Anokhe Lal, late Shri Samta Prasad, Shri Kanthe Maharaj ets had the super talent of playing tabla. They left the audience stunned with thier art. But one this shri Zakir Hussain who in such low age has astonished not only own country but the whole world. No doubt amongst all those mentioned above this gentlemen Shri Zakir Hussain son of a proficient renowned Tabla player like late Shri Alla Rakha, is a born prodigy who came from the womb of his great mother itself to astonish the world wit his talent. I have heared that his fathe Shri Alarakha from the childhood itself of Zakir Hussain started giving the training of playing tabla. And with the growing age the practice went on to be more rigorous and prolonged. Late shri Alarakh himself was a great proficient tabla player which could make Shri Zakir Hussein a better and more profficient Tabla player. With all combined I can say that a Zakir Hussein can not be created first without gift of god, his personal capability, and lastly without Guru and trainer like the great late shri Alarakha! God bless him. No doubt he is a gem pride of India. 😊❤

Ustaad Allah Rakha : Rock n' Roll, such as the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart, admired Ustaad Allah Rakha and studied his technique, benefiting greatly even from single meetings. Hart, a published authority on percussion in world music, said "Alla Rakha is the Einstein, the Picasso; he is the highest form of rhythmic development on this planet." Alla Rakha also collaborated with jazz drummer Buddy Rich, on their 1968 album Rich à la Rakha. The Ustaad gave us a genius, his son, Zakir Hussain !!!
