In this video we'll be trying our luck at a homemade patina paint job from left over spray paint I had laying around.
We'll be doing this on the 1966 Chevy 1 ton that we spray painted with rattle can Rustoleum paint we got from Wal Mart.
Drop us a line sometime at:

Mike I owns a autobody shop for over 35 years and body and painter by trade. And also ground up restoration on all my collections and toys. And for you to take on this with a spray can and make it look better than maaco. And then take on a patina look. I personally see a awesome job. Love you content. Videos and your knowledge Keep em a rolling and all the negative comments are plain jealous
I'm one of those guys who doesn't like the "patina" look. I think the shiny new version looked great. But, since you were going for the weathered patina look, I have to say you did a great job and it came out looking almost like the original paint might have looked. Looking forward to the video where you clear the truck.
Absolutely love it!
Beard ross .ok guys lets add a happy little patina over here
I think it looks good now , I would definitely go with a satin clear !! Thanks for another , Brother !!
When you started putting the paint thinner on with the brush there was a spot where you had the brush a little too wet. I was totally hoping you were going to say "There are no mistakes, just happy accidents." That would have been perfect.
Nailed it... awesome. 😂😂😂
I was hoping for the same thing!
That's what I thought.
You had that look before you started. I'm for a nice shiny paint job.
I try not to be a hater but I totally agree. I loved the Uhaul truck look but to each his own. I still enjoy watching Mike work.
Not your truck so it doesn't matter if you like it or not.
@@jerrywilcox9890 that’s why I said to each his own. Some will like it and some won’t. He still does a great job and I will continue to follow and watch.
@jerrywilcox9890 Karen, you mad bro?
I was originally a "shiny" advocate. However, you convinced me that patina was the way to go. Sealing it with clear satin would be the best thing to do, in my opinion. 😊😊😊
Always a great job Mike. Still not for me. There are so few old cars and trucks out there and most of them look beat, I want the nice looking one. Even if it is a spray can 10 footer. Keep up the excellent job beard!
WELL. I simply skimmed thru this video. If we knew this was the look you wanted most of us would have suggested to simply paint the truck brown first. 46:01 (rust color or red oxide primer color). And not waste the time and money on the orange paint. Plus I would have hammered down the high spots a bit to prevent sanding thru to metal. I feel it would I d have been quicker. Cheaper and better in the long run
The patina was an afterthought
Why don't you pour gasoline on it and lite it on fire.
I like it now, flat or semi gloss both would look good. Go with the middle satin finish clear. That's my 2 cents. Good work Weird Beard.
Love your videos brother. Truck looks great! Have you been working on the Fury?
Personally, I liked it shiny, but it's not mine! So, if you love it, that's all that matters!
It's your truck, but I still liked the shiny paint job.
I love the sarcasm it was spot on. The Bob Ross nap sack on the chair was priceless. I have to admit I'm not much into the patina look I'm more of a bling bling kind of guy, but I can appreciate your vision and the work that went into achieving it. Well done.
watching from Australia - love it! keep on doing what you do brother!
Thanks! Will do!
167th! GOOD TUESDAY EVENING MIKE! Still not my cup of tea, but you are giving it the old college try! As long as the owner likes it,that’s all that matters. Great job! Roger in Pierre South Dakota
Do a satin clear and if it's still too shiny you can hit it with some 800 grit. I wasn't too sold on it when you started, but now I'm a believer. I really like it.
Looks like a truck guest starring in a Hollywood Halloween movie. Now, give it an appropriate name WB ! A Chillin' Chevy......
I rather go with a shinny gloss look EVERY BODY & THEIR MOTHER has this look its run its course. I did that to my 65 GMC & it got old after a while O well killer color thou.
Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone's got one. Just my opinion, but I liked the truck with the paint job before you tried to do the patina. I am not hating on it, just voting for no patina. Love the channel! Keep up the good work!
Not going back so deal with it.
@jerrywilcox9890 why are you so angry, Karen?
I don't know Brother. Great if you had a week to go in the shop and play around. I owned a patina car for two years. Kind of played out on patina. The clean look looked good on that truck. A bit uhaul looking though..maybe a candy orange would have been cool. And then patina. Good job man .
Sorry Beard but I still don't care for it personally, I think that this look is just over done anymore and for some a excuse not to do body work and paint. But that's my opinion and I still like Watching You all there in on the ranch LOL! Still waiting to see the Coronet finished also! Now That Car was a job I watched every video !
Fair enough
Hey WB . . . i'd try a flat/dull final finish - - but either way u go it'll still be a cool "going down the road" old truck brother! i dig the creativity!
Still like the original orange clean look more than the patina look. But one thing the aging did was get rid of the orange peel. So a win there. You have some bare sheet metal showing, so I am leaning towards a light satin coat, with a little thicker spray over the bare metal spots.
This is turning out ok, but I would have not gone all the way down the rabbit hole.
This was enjoyable to watch and see how you got to your mostly end result. Good job so far.
I like it. Looks like it should as an old original work truck. Satin would give it that old sun faded gloss finish. I’m enjoying this build.
I think you may have been huffing too many paint fumes. But since you went this far, you should put some whiskey dents in it, and it's crying out for some rust holes. But you should do it how you want it.
I think what your doing to the paint job is good because now it doesn’t look like a uhaul truck. Looks way better now. Awesome job and great video
Wasted my time watching you ruin the truck. No, I'm not a fan of patina. I hope your next project is better than the last 2 of this series
I’m one of those guys that just doesn’t care for the patina look, but if that’s what floats your boat go for it! That truck truly should have gotten the a make over job. It has good bones to start with, and it survived all those decades only to end up looking like no one cared for it. That’s why I don’t like the patina look, love the channel!
I’m going to come back daily for the comments 😂😂😂
Thanks for posting WB
Id dig the satin clear myself. Ive enjoyed watching this whole process go down! Good job man!
I love it man!🤘 If u ask me: IF you clear it, do the mat finish. Any shine will take away from the natural look in my opinion
Looks like a weathered u-haul truck Puddin would have a fit over this truck
Looks way better without the big burn spot on the hood, but I still hate patina.
Love it, love it, love it. The only thing I don't appreciate is the universal side view mirror mount /shotgun blast scatter pattern holes on the doors.😢
Mike it turned out very nice, I had no doubt, like you said you can just paint it again and start over. What some people might not get is that you have to paint the object backwards. What color do you want to show through, paint those first, then last is your main color and sand as needed. What about Poppy's Patina ????
Loks apout right for a truck around Arizona, that was nevr painted, You need to seal it with flat sealer
I agree
You're still that 5 or 6 year old kid. You just got bigger Crayons now. 😂
😂
I like it, looking forward to the end of this project and many more. Enjoy the natural flow of your channel man. Keep it up
Thanks! Will do!
I never had any doubt you'd make it look awesome. Great job my friend. 👊🍻🔥
Hit it with Satin Clear and I think she needs a name. Let's say "Cheeto Dust"
Nice
It's really looking good. I love the patina style paint job. I so love that style of GMC and Chevy Pickups. I so enjoy your videos, keep up the great work.
Yes!!!!!Pumped for an update!!
at first i thought it was bad but you fixed it / like to see you clear coat it thank you
Too much work for something that'll happen over time. Just take the shine off and then polish.
It's not his truck.does it the way the owner wants.
@@jerrywilcox9890 who's the owner?
You're 100% correct. I agree with everything you've said here. It's fake patina done really well, for the right reasons! Make sure to dull the area under the door handles! Those areas would wear out first!
Thanks man. Good advice.
That'd just be a patina bonus.
Looks good man. Are you going to do the white to match? I guess I would clear it to protect the paint, but like you say. It can't be too shiny. Some might say this is too much work, but if you're having fun and trying to get a certain look, then it's worth the time it takes.
Definitely going to work on the white a little bit
Low gloss use! Lookin great!
Nothing with patina looks good
That was the look i wanted....I JUST DIDN'T KONW IT!! I stand corrected. The initial faded look was good, but could have been any later paint job. Now it looks like 60 year old paint. GREAT JOB. YOU PROVED ME WRONG.
But WB... my 1972 F-250 Bump side is so freaking strait! And No Rust :) And right now she has the perfect look of 'Original Paint' cuz it is the orginal factory Seapine Green paint! Call me Ole School but she's getting a Fresh and Shiny two tone, Seapine Green and Wimbledon White :)
I liked it better shiny. Mike it’s your truck and I hope you enjoy it. Love your videos and your channel. Keep them coming.👍🏻😊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Different strokes, different folks. Either way I love the paint job. Clear coat would protect the patina look. However, it would make the pátina shiny. So maybe satin. Nice job.
Sorry Weird Beard, I'm still not a fan. Maybe if you had just knocked the shine off I might have been on board. BUT, I'm only one opinion. I'm glad it came out the way YOU wanted it!! YOU are the artist, not me !!! So great job !!
Your the best love it mat uk 🇬🇧
Satin clear coat would look great,
I like the way it looks
👍🏻👍🏻
Adam Bode on his "BodeVision" UA-cam channel just finished doing something similar to his '68 F350 cab. It takes a lot of work and creativity to achieve a decent patina finish.
I see my dad's work truck, mid-60's Chevy C-10 from the city water and sewer department. I can smell it too. My 60's and 70's guitars and amps got patina, but they're weathered from use.
I don't go for weathering replicas, but that Ford you're working on isn't a replica. So I can relate to your desire to give it the 'survivor' look. It's fictional, but it's based on a true story.
I have a 79 GMC pickup 3/4 * 4 wheel drive I'm thinking about painting it just like you did this one I think you're doing a wonderful job keep up the good work my brother and God bless you and your family
I would do a satin finish for sure. Yeah it looks like a 60 year old paint job. I love it.
Question….. If I was gonna try this on a horrible paint job like this Chevy had before you started, do you think painting the whole truck first would be necessary or just start with what you have???? I know it would be cheaper. Lol. Peace
I was team old looking from the start . IM WATCHING YOUR VIDEO AND DOING MY C10 THE SAME COLOR!!
I just can't look at this UGLY truck anymore! I really don't like that patina look, old junk looks like old junk to me. That first beautiful paint job was really nice to me. I guess it's different strokes for different folks!
Awesome 🍺, I for one trust your vision to your work. Thank you Weird Beard, as the saying goes, you learn something new everyday. This truck a great video series. Much appreciated.
I appreciate your skills WB, but no amount of convincing will make me like patina. Everyone is different on that but I don't like it at all. I love the old body style, especially the pre 64 model with the knee knocker doors, and with the big rear window.
But in all seriousness, you truly are an artist. Going down that rabbit hole shows how much of a perfectionist you are. I'm the same way. The fact that you take whatever it takes to achieve the look YOU, (and nobody else, screw them), is going for is proof of your talent. This is why YOUR channel is unlike all the others. I hate patina but I've watched other channels use a patina gloss coat and it makes it look presentable, so satin patina would make it look like someone fixed up an old truck and just coated it to protect it so I think that would be excellent.
Don't say it's like art. Doing that is 💯% ART. Art is done in many different forms. And what you are doing is artistry. I'm not to the end of the video but I can see the vision. I have seen a few people go the same kind (type) of look and there's was not bad at the end at all. But as I watch you build all the layers of colors on all of the hood seems like the way it should be done. I'm so excited to get to the end to see how it turns out. Keep up the great content man👍 Your killing it🎯.
Really enjoying the positive attitude as you go through each step you do on these "home" projects..👍
Rustolium paint jobs will fade and go bad on their own by exposure to sun and weather. It has nothing in it to provide protection from the elements. Your truck, your decision , but I think it was wasted effort. Press on. Love your vids
Mike, you did a fantastic job on this, it looks great. If this was a total restoration with dent repair and all the works, then yes, a nice shiny paint job would be great. But this makes the truck look its age or look like a decades old restoration that is now faded. I guess the only nitpicky thing is if this was a natural patina, those bare metal spots would be rusty. Personally I would love to drive a truck like this, because I would have no fear of scratching the paint lol. Thumbs up! I think a satin clear would finish it nicely and help preserve what's there.
Satin my brother... excellent job... gonna do it to my 1986 white F150...
I'm sorry but it's just not me. I don't want to drive down the road looking like Lamont Sanford. You can call it a fancy name like patina all you want, but to most people, it just look like you can't afford anything better.
Looks old new stock.??. Not knowing what it's called, other than a top coat. To protect the paint. Nothing over the top to take away from what you're going for. Like just a protective coat.??. 46:01
I really love the way you addressed for the apologies😅.
I do think you should do a lite coat of satin clear. Don't think it needs much clear at all. The thin layer will seal it all up. Just to protect the look for a while. Then it will get to the point that nature starts to strip it the way years would have done. It will bring the spots out even more natural and I think your paint job will get even better as time goes by. Not needing 10s of years for it to happen. As long as you keep the clear coat lite.. Again don't get me wrong at all. You are doing an awesome job👏. Just an opinion about how the clear is done. I doo think it needs some protection in a satin. Just after I thought about it for a minute and just had an idea. (I can see what I think would continue what you have started in my head) Lol.
How ever you do decide to stop with the paint I'm sure will look great.
Well...I still woulda body worked it and did a single stage paint job, but that's my hang- up, not yours😂😂😂
Well done now that's looking like a proper old truck, I think it would look brilliant satin clear coated and protect all that hard work, but for me looking very good, sending love from here in England 🇬🇧.
OK, I was haten it bit man that looks good but with that being said I don't know if it's for 🤔
Great video as always,Thanks Mr. Beard
Yes clear coat I would go with satin , you could try just spraying a light dusting of flat over the satin just as it's starting to set 😅custom spray paint ... I want ghost flames ...hillbilly hot rod her
What will you be doing to the VERY WHITE roof ? . . . paint job not my taste but as long as you like it that's all that matters.Seems to be a lot of work involved to get that look though.
Definitely satin
I dig it because I have had nice paint, and shitty don't wash it and didn't care and all the older guys and friends of my dad and family were like when r u gonna paint your car or truck and I couldn't afford it just get them running and drive um 😀 my question is are you going to put anything over the color (flat clear or patina preserver thanks for the great videos love the channel
Man that was painful to watch
Now it's a dull pumpkin instead of an old Barney
But no worries I'm still looking forward to the next video
Funny comment about the apology. The question is, will the truck forgive YOU? LOL...
Don’t like it now,I think it looked better the first time. But that’s only my opinion. Maybe you should use a respirator next time 😂😂😂
Got to say it WB: You nailed that look you were after. Real live Body Art.
You are pretty creative in a 'Weird' way mate! 👏👏
When I was a kid, I used to build model sailing ships. I used to spend hours and hours getting them right, lots of detail, then I would float them in an old tank we had down the back and set them alight. They used to burn right down to the waterline. I guess I had a reason for doing that.
Kinda cathartic in a way...
This is not my cup of tea. I'm a "like new" type of guy. But since this was what you were going for from the start and you seem happy about it , it must be perfect this way and I respect your taste :)
We commented on where you left off last time, like you asked. That nasty splotch you had was not good. So in essence you repainted that. It is much better now, .
gonna have to give a replacement fender for my truck a patina look....hope to make it look right
Good luck man. You’ll get it.
I think it is turning out perfectly. The shiny paint over all the old damage and years of doing truck things looked ok on screen but know that it looks terrible in person. I would put the truck outside for a while after done sanding and let the bare spots rust then flat clear it. Excited to see it come together 👍👍
well sir...gotta tell ya i am one of them not in the patina look crowd....rusty ol junk looks like rusty ol junk....your choice and if its your thing well then a fella can't change a thing by what he says....i just feel sorry for what was going to be a really cool truck to ...welllll...what it is now...just not cool to me...
Clear coat her
Beard, I usually really like your stuff but have be honest … I absolutely hate you ruining the paint on this truck with the fake patina. Sorry.
When is the Fury coming back???? The truck looks awesome! I would do satin on the finish.
A mate looks very good . I do the same sort of thing but to peoples kitchens and furniture give it the old farm house look big money in that work in Australia but very nice job mate loveing it
Lets paint it..then then rub it off again.bruh not convinced.. god bless ya tho...ps.....finish the dodge
That orange powder on your hands reminds me of the infamous cheetos fingers. I like your idea and looks good. Satin or flat would work well.
OMG shame on weird beard makin an ole chevy look like an ole rustoleum sales will go up paint shops will go out of bussines I got a can of red that wont match either now I am inspired
What about the Plymouth? You can probably sell it and use the proceeds for some nice project… my 2 cents.
Mike and I have one thing in common. We are Sooners. …. Yup we’ll finish this project sooner or later
I say let those bare metal spots oxidize then satin coat it. Polish any chrome pieces call it done. Love it Mike, great job.
