I took spanish and german in high school. I've lived in the philippines for months at a time over the last couple decades and I'm still having trouble with tagalog...took about 10 years before I could even tell where one word ends and another begins, just because they don't pause between words the way I do as an intentionally slow talking, precise american....the next problem is very few filipinos can speak a pure form of tagalog without mixing in english and "bastardized" spanish, of which the filipino language is now inclusive...then, the problem after that is that many filipinos don't speak tagalog, so tagalog speakers have to know english because the people from other regions speak to them mostly in english

The one girl who was wanting an American accent almost has it down pat. I would encourage her to use more connecting words and learn as many prepositions as possible. Prepositions will help you describe objects in space. Just think of describing anyplace a mouse can go. Over under around through on in by beside along above below away. I find Spanish and Philippinos are limited in their use of prepositions. But they would allow you to sound more American if that’s your goal. It’s not necessarily better it’s just a distinguishing characteristic.
