My wife and I are both 78 and we recently had a new washer dryer due to our old one being 10 years old and unrepairable. After the machine had been installed it became apparent that it was too complicated for my wife to operate, I jokingly suggested that she take flying lessons as they would be easier. If only the manufacture makes something like a manual to read to understand the new washing machine oh wait they do why people dont read it or just look at how to work it I will never know think it easier to just complain. And if you dont like the new ones there is a market for older washing machine as they last for years new ones design to last 5 or 8 years max before you need a new one.

I've had two new washing machines, a Bosch and an LG, both of which failed within six years. Modern machines are poor quality and don't use enough water to clean and rinse clothes properly. It's straightforward: people want a washing machine that effectively washes and rinses their clothes and lasts at least 10-15 years, my parents had a washing machine that lasted over 20 years the clothes came out fresh and clean no residue of detergent and the wash cycle didn't take 3-4 hours 90 minutes max ! its very frustrating from a customers point of view that manufactures have priortised energy ratings enforced by bureaucrats !

My main complaint is the lack of manual override. One of which is temperature setting override and another is extra rinsing option.
I would love love love a double rinse.
@@donnamaco1 in my washing machine, which I have seen also in some others, there is an extra rinse button. This can only be activated (the associated light indicator comes on) for only certain wash settings. For example, in mine, it can be activated for 'whites' and "mixed' and not others. For each wash setting, press the extra rinse button to find out which are the required ones.
Wouldnt be as energy efficient if the customer could override everything.
@@gammelgemse probably not. People with sensitive skin want extra rinse no matter how mild the detergent is so they would that option for every setting.
That really depends on the model. The cheaper ones probably don't have those options.
I think the Manufacturers need to listen to the Public ..... l will not want to buy a machine that will not do a shorter wash with a full load ... l do not want to wait half a day to complete a wash. I am sure l am not on my own here ...... 🤔
Although washing can often be done during the night,on a time switch if necessary,if you are caring for someone with an incontinence problem,then it will be in constant use&needs to be much quicker.
It not really a Manufacturer problem it is a law problem as for them to get a A rated sticker they have to look good on paper but in real world they suck but they have to do use less water and energy to please the EU laws that tell them less is best and longer is better but real people hate it.
Totally agree. Who in their right mind designs these things to take a horrendous 2.5 hours to complete one, single, load ?! These machines are ridiculous. And they expect us to believe that you can clean a load of (actually dirty clothes) in a small puddle of water !
Disgraceful 3 to 4 hrs to kill virus and bacteria in these days of Covid, not to mention if you have young kids at school. I want my 60 degree full wash in 60 mins.
The machine has to heat the water up from cold… It takes time to do this, detergents take time to work. 2-2.5 hours is really not a very long time at all. Learn some patience if you want a hygienic wash

Thanks for that explanation about why the bath mat is still soaking wet even after two extra spin cycles. I wasn't expecting any of my problems with my one year old washing machine to actually get fully answered.
WOW. I thought my new American front loader had a long cycle at 75 minutes. But your washer goes over 3 hours. Crazy.
Further to my previous two comments we have finally given up trying to understand how to use the dry only programme on our new Hotpoint washer dryer. Despite following all the instructions and pressing all the right buttons it starts to wash again. This morning I have had to rescue our old tumble dryer from the shed where it has been in retirement for the last ten years.
So frustrating!
Thats because you pressed the 'Dry Only' feature, which programmes the machine to do nothing whatsoever for 3.75 hours, whilst you figure out that it's waiting for you to get in the car and drive to the local dry cleaners. Which is easier and often quicker than using the washing machine.
Why are twintubs no longer available? No circuit boards to go wrong, just bearings that may need replacing every few years, even the motor is a simple fix. I did buy a Bosch a few years ago, was nothing but trouble and only lasted 3 years, fortunately I still had the twintub in the shed and it's running perfectly to this day. I bought it in the 70's.
I have no idea. We used to do really well with twin tubs but not a clue why they have disappeared from the market.
I would love to buy a washer that allows the customer to program the washing cycles. It would be nice to have 5 or 6 customer washing programs. The customer can program the washer from scratch, or program the washer based on existing preset programs by changing parameters values and save the customer programs. For example, for the wash cycle, set the water temp and amount, set the duration of wash time, for the rinse cycle, set the water amount, rinse agitation duration, spin duration and speed, allow water feed during spin duration with water feed duration and spin duration. Set number of rinse cycles. Set spin cycle duration and speed. All these can be set by pushing buttons. And save the program button. Repeat the programming in operations and save multiple programs. When the customer wants to wash laundry, he/she can call up one of his/her programs and run it. I would guess if such a programmable washer is available, a lot of people would want to buy it, and the appliance company would dominate the market and make a lot of money!

What on earth do manufacturers think they're doing. My Hotpoint top loader from 1988 has a wash time of 40-75 mins and uses plenty of water to ensure a decent wash. It's not as if there's a shortage of water in the UK! And it seems they just don't last like they used to.

Great video. I’m not sure why I was suggested it, but anyway. We had a Fisher and Paykel Kelvinator top loader and it would do a wash in like 40mins, but we now have an AEG front loader and it could take 3 hours but it usually recalculates to around 1hr40min. It washes much better and spins faster than the old F&P, it’s quiet and efficient.
We wouldn’t go back.
I've been giving this advice to my customers for a while now when I get called out to washing machines. A lot of the time I'm just giving advice instead of actually needing to
open my tool box to fix the washing machine.
I agree with your customers. When it comes to these appliances I don’t care about energy efficiency. Our power bill and water bills are affordable. I’d much prefer a commercial washer and dryer like a Dexter or Speed Queen. A unit which will be complete in 25 minutes -- like the units you’d find at a laundromat. End of. All these new consumer appliances are total Junk.
Just wait until you are forced to have an air source heat pump to heat your property to see what new junk is being forced on you.

i totally agree on what you said a good washer and dryer should last you 20 + years NOT 2 to 5 years on a new washer and dryer i can go on and on lets just leave there for now
You may be able to afford the bills but there is an environmental impact.
There's also an environmental impact due to electrical good be designed not to last very long.
Thanks my man. My old (26 years!) Indesit has badly furred arteries (London water!). I've now ordered a new one (sadly not from you guys) after looking at your videos and sites like Which?. You give the impression of knowing what you're talking about so I listened. Seems good advice. I find it amusing that I finally gave up on my ancient machine when the wash times got to 3.5 hours yet now that's kind of normal but for very different reasons which I understand. Thanks again!

Why are so many problems with these modern washers. I had 3 that developed faults and they had barely been used that much. Old washers used to last.

They are made with much cheaper materials., all about profits now and not about quality.
With the old washers you could go down the market & buy parts cheap to fix em & have them up & running again ..I am not bothered with all this energy efficiency bollox ,a washing machine that doesn’t wash & get thd grease & muck out your clothes is no good to man nor beast ..

Along with what the others have said I think it's also all these added electronics and features. More sensors, more programs, more circuits to go wrong just like in new cars.

It has taken us a little while to get used to the machine but we've just about got the hang of it, however we are still having a bit of difficulty with the dryer part of it, for example using the dry only programme.
my mrs hated the front loader shes in her 60s, all the bending down to unload and load so she went back to a top loader, no bells and whistles, she leaves it at the same setting for all washes so there is only one button to push, it does walk the floor sometimes during the spin cycle but it warns you with loud bangs and the house shakes like there is an earthquake
I remember my mother still using a washboard and mangle - you can't beat those for energy efficiency.

The only reason I don’t really like modern washers as they aren’t the same as the use to be. The quality really has gone down over time. There are the good odd brands out there. But I think I’ll stick with the old washers if possible

Apart from my automatic machine which has an Extra Rinse setting, very handy too, I bought a Hotpoint twin tub fro ebay which boils - yes that's right BOILs clothes. Sometimes the only way to get white cottons really white after they've gone a bit beige looking.

Damned if i had known ! The new machine let me all the time the new bathmats washed but full of water. I thought it was the quality of the bathmat which were soaking soo much, so i called the company who had no clue ..and I garbaged the 2 bathmats. Then i bought towel bathmats and it goes with towels etc at 60°c.

My biggest complaint about newer machines is the size. When we moved into our house 25 years ago, getting a machine that fits the space in our kitchen was straightforward. Over the years, it’s got harder and harder to find one to fit without having to rip out the kitchen and completely refit!
I don’t understand why there isn’t more choice in size to suit smaller households. Not everyone has a family (either large or small), and if there’s only the two of us, why on earth do we need an 8 - 10 kg machine? A 6kg would perfectly adequate( and would probably fit into my small kitchen)but small households just aren’t catered for nowadays! Bring back smaller slimmer width machines please 🙏🏻
Slim depth machines still exist. Not high end though. Candy, Hoover, Beko and Hisense all do 52cm depth machines. Top end AEG, Zanussi and Miele can be up to 65cm deep which I agree is ridiculous. I only know as I recently needed a slim depth one.
I think it has to do with the energy efficiency labels.
I'm looking for a new machine at the moment and I've seen allot of sites mentioning that a bigger machine is better for the environment as it uses less energy in comparison.
A friend of mine bought a top loader as he found it more convenient (no need to bend) and he's alone so he didn't need a new big machine.

@@ramblingrob4693 I think the majority of us only use a couple of programmes. For me it’s the daily 1hr 8 kg programme, and 30 min 3kg programme.
It’s like most of us only wearing 20% of our clothes 80% of the time!
@@Truth1561 Don't use the express programs, they're less energy efficient and don't wash nearly as well as the regular 2-3h ones. You can see this with deodorant/sweat stains under the armpits of dress shirts. If you always use the short programs, over time the armpit area gets stained worse and worse.
After I started using the full length program I immediately noticed the stains starting to recede, and after 5-10 wash cycles they were completely gone. Same detergent.
This is a brilliant video probably the best I have seen has a great presenter & it so informative about the programmes on a washing that I never had a clue about, I have always tried to avoid long washes but now I am aware of what these programmes are all about I will be able to use with complete confidence.

Important considerations (not mentioned in the video)
1 - Why many or even most people should insist on having extra rinse function available on their new washing machine?
As explained in the video, the new machines are much more water and energy consumption efficient, which is great for at least 80% of the time, when you'll be using the machine. So far, so good.
However, for some tasks you will need to use more detergent and more water and that may come into clash with the design philosophy of your new machine. For example, sometimes I need to wash extra large items like curtains, huge bed sheets or even blankets (I know, by instructions this is not recommended, but I do that too and with success I might add).
In these cases I may even add some more water, after the machine filled in the water and if I see, that it's not enough for proper washing (i.e. if a blanket has soaked all the water and you see no water in the drum). You just need an extra rinse when doing such laundries and it's not avoidable, I'm afraid. That is why you should want to have Extra rinse option on your machine.
2 - Avoid too energy/water efficient appliances, if you know you'll be using the machine often to its full capacity.
The reason for that is, that the machine manufacturer assumes you'll not be using the full load capacity of the machine most of the time (and for the most part they will be right!), but if you know, you will have big loads of laundry at times, or need to wash big items (bed sheets, curtains, blankets) then using the machine at the borders of its capabilities may not have as good cleaning and rinsing performance, as expected.
I cannot make any particular recommendations, you should know your needs and what you're looking for and then compare different brands/models and decide for yourself.
I would advise to be careful if you're going for a Bosch Serie 6 (as shown in the video) - while it is probably a great machine, you should know that Serie 6 is extra eco friendly / environmentally conscious range of appliances and it may not be perfect for some people (like myself). If you have those special laundry needs, as I've mentioned, you may find a machine from one of the other Bosch series to be better suited for yourself (Serie 2 is basic machines, very good for 1-2 people, Serie 4 is kind of best value for money serie and very suitable for families, Serie 6 is eco and Serie 8 is top-notch, high-end tech, advanced features, etc). I think people should be aware of these things, when considering a new purchase, since that appliance is going to be with you for years to come, and you'll want to make sure you've made the correct choice for your needs, right?
3 - If possible, look for a 90-degrees program.
Most people will never have to do laundry at 90 degrees C, myself included, but - you can use this program with NO laundry loaded - as a machine cleaning and disinfection program, which may come handy. If you run a cycle per 1-3 months, you'll have a cleaner and more safe machine for your laundry and that's great.
In case you can't find a suitable machine with 90-degrees program, but if it does have a 60 C program - that may still do. In such case you can use dishwasher tablets to clean and maintenance the machine once a month, you can also use bleach (but not together! it is either a dishwasher tablet OR bleach, not both!). If you use a dishwasher tablet - you can run at 60 C program, if using bleach - 40 C is best (and I would advise NOT to go any higher than 40 C with bleach, to avoid possible release of toxic gases). Doing such a maintenance cycle is not needed more often than once per month or two.
For people with allergies, a 90 C program is a must - and those people should never use bleach or dishwasher tablets to clean the machine. Bosch does have a special Allergies program, and probably other brands do have similar program, so if you do have allergies - look for such a machine, suited to your needs.
In the US, we have the convenience of top-load washers (a boon for those of us with back issues, no bending to handle heavy wet clothes through an inconveniently-placed opening) and in the past twenty years or so, new machine designs have emerged trying to wash five cubic feet of laundry in a half-pint of water. The basic design takes a perforated wash tub with the hubcap from a '63 Studebaker in the bottom; the hubcap turns back and forth supposedly balancing and turning the clothes over, adding a bit of water at a time until the tub is brim-full, diddling about a bit, deciding that the load is unbalanced, draining, refilling, diddling, never getting grimy clothes clean or balanced in the three to eight hours the cycle ends up taking. There are many documented accounts of such machines self-destructing in the final spin cycles, parts even breaking through the drywall and plaster of the laundry room.
I bought an old-school Speed Queen TC5000, essentially the type of top-load machine most common in US coin laundries, and while it does use more water on paper, my water bill was lower after the purchase, the wash cycle takes less than a half-hour, and my grimy work clothes come out clean.
As long as no one listens to this advice, they should be fine. Bleach in a washing machine? LOL
@@niceguy235uk1 yes - 100 ml of bleach in a washing machine once per 1-3 months, with no clothes inside, to kill bacteria, viruses and most importantly - mold.
Then clothes come out fresh with no bad / mold smell. It is a proven advice and method to keep your washing machine sanitized.
@@niceguy235uk1 listen to what Bosch themselves say on their website for detergent - they even accept as common, that bleach can be used as a detergent (I use it only for my bathroom curtain, to disinfect it). The following is a quotation from Bosch's own website:
"In our Bosch washing machine detergent drawers compartment, one is for the prewash detergent (Symbol I). The second dosing chamber is for the detergent for the main wash and also descaler, bleach and stain removal products. (Symbol II)."

Ahh, the 'older generation'
My grandmother used an electric boiler (using gallons) and a stirring stick and I guess rinsed the stuff somehow and used a wringer/mangle ("Acme" !). She never used a washing machine. I suspect she never used an electric cooker either. She never had a telly and while being in the same house, generally wouldn't watch our telly. There were 2 exceptions: The Queen's Christmas broadcast and Gardener's World !
While we were on holiday, we told her how to turn the telly on and adjust the volume. When we got back, the telly was still on with the volume turned down ! (push for on, push again for off.)
In many early Australian laundries was the 'copper', which is a container made with the metal (somewhat expensive now), often with a gas fire underneath to heat the wash water. An interesting effect was that the actual copper killed a lot of 'bad' bacteria negating the need for adding other chemical disinfectants than ordinary soap. Of course it required a lot of manual labour to manage, but that was plentiful when the 'housewife' was considered an occupation...
@@jamesatkinson6480 The term 'copper' is retained in commercial kitchens - as basically a pan so big it has its own legs. Heated by gas, electricity or even steam !
I have seen our 'tin bath' - for bath nights in front of an open fire. I don't recall using it - no real need as we had a kitchen sink with supplies of hot and cold water :)

Basically. Newer doesn’t always mean better or easier to use.
My one year old Bosch washing machine (one of the cheaper models) when we first got it the clothes were coming out at the end of the wash smellier than when they went in, and there were no visible suds when we used the recommended amount of washing liquid. I experimented and found that if I use three times the recommended amount of washing liquid and put two thirds of it inside the drum and a third in the dispensing drawer, and also always use the 60 degree wash, which takes about two and a half hours, then the clothes come out clean. I also elevated the outpipe to make sure that water wasn't pooling and getting stagnant, but that in itself didn't improve the stinkiness of the washing. I compensate for the extra expense of the washing liquid by not washing clothes too frequently, hanging things up and being careful, and also buying giant economy size bottles, and washing delicate fabrics by hand. I was wondering if washing liquid manufacturers, some worse than others, were putting less of what does the cleaning in their products, and the only solution is to use more of it or find a stronger product by a different manufacturer. Strangely I think some cheaper products are better at cleaning than some more expensive ones that have in the past year or so been "improved" (that used to be really good). I don't understand all the settings, but the 40 degree eco wash with the recommended amount of the "improved" version of washing liquid was rubbish at cleaning clothes, they came out stinking. I don't know if the culprit is the new improved washing machines or the new improved washing liquid, or a combination of the two. I never needed to use the 60 degree wash on our previous washing machine, not really old I think we had it about 5 years so bought about 6 years ago, I always used to use the 40 degree eco wash on that and the washing didn't come out stinking.

Just one note. Have you heard of Ebac washing machines. These are a British manufacture with their facility based in County Durham in the north east. Great machines and not badged imports, but built right here within the UK. .
Yes, but expensive of course and will they last longer for it? Can they be repaired? That is the most annoying feature to me as I used to mend our Twin Tub very easily.
My most complaint of if I did get a new washing machine would be getting used to the noise of it.😮

These Euro machines look like an absolute nightmare. 4 and a half hours for a washload? That's just unacceptable, who has time for that? I'll stick to my USA made top load washer. 36 minutes start to finish and the greywater gets redirected outside to water my lawn.
Brings back memories of the 60s (AFAIR) for me.👍😎...My Mum used to have a Hotpoint top loader with electric top rollers. I remember the big internal paddle used to agitate back and forth in the water. I'd never seen water so hot and soapy. If you left your clothes in there for four and a half hours I think they would have melted.😜

There may be shorter cycles on your front loaders but they're as useful for an average washing load as an ashtray on a motorbike

Well with energy prices rising up! its gonna backfire on companies! - but u can reduce the time on most machines.. you dont have to put up with longer wash times.
I love your description on not always using short / low temp washes! spot on, not only doesnt it perform well, but u will make the machine produce more limescale cos of low temp, and also the machines door seal with go mouldy! keep up the great work awesome!

The trouble is everyone's lifestyle is different. My washing is in an outbuilding so if I put my machine on for a three and a half hours I would have to get up at 7am to put the thing on ready to hang it out for 10.30am, I don't have a tumble dryer.
My machine is a Hotpoint. There is a way I can stop the machine full flow on a 60 wash after 45 mins. which is long enough, then use the rinse and spin cycle which is another 15mins. No one in this day and age is that dirty, most people shower at least once a day.
Why does it take so long to wash a load over there. The government limiting every facet of your life down to water used per load I assume. Can wash a load in the states in an hour .
It was started in USA with the ridiculous climate 'emergencies' and your Mr Gore's fear-mongering about water shortages ( there is none at all in UK)
Replaced a 15 year old front loading set with a new LG set and the difference in how much better the LG does at washing and drying is night and day. Yes, the wash times are longer, so I just spread out the loads a bit more.
I know it's not just my imagination - old set was spitting out towels that were matted and slightly musty - almost like it wasn't rinsing them thoroughly. With the LG on the first time washing the same towels through they came out so fluffy they wouldn't fit back into the old cabinet they came out of!
Also agree - people need to stop getting hung up about the amount of water in these machines. Does it get the load clean? That's what really matters. Same about putting way too much freaking soap in front loaders - I have to threaten some of the members in my family with bodily harm to get them from drowning the stupid machines in way too much soap.
🤣 Unfortunately I can only blame myself for causing the mess from detergent generosity and inadequate appreciation, or is it respect 🤔 for the spin balance thing. 😏

You may not have to upgrade to a new machine. They still make all the parts for your Maytag. It is a much better machine.

The biggest annoyance for me with modern washing machines is definitely the wash time,I totally understand the reduction of water and detergent as a good thing but I just can't get my head around using 3.5 hours of electricity as being energy efficient instead of 1.5 hours 🤷♀️! It's all gobbledegook to me 😂
It can be frustrating but hopefully the tradeoff of the machine being more energy efficient should try and make up for it.
It's because the most energy is used in heating the water so by using less water, it uses less heating which is the most energy hungry part. The spinning part doesn't use as much. But also, while a 1.5h wash will be moving basically all the time, a 3.5h wash will have periods where it has paused and is just soaking the clothes.
In short, it doesn't draw a consistent amount of power the whole time it is switched on. It would be like a TV used to watch a movie for 1.5 hours is using more power than a TV left on standby for 3.5 hours. Both are using power, but not at the same rate.

Theres no way on earth a washing machine powered up for 3 hours uses less electricity than a machine powered up for 1 hr - thats simply beyond the laws of phyiscs.
They still have to heat up water to the same degree , and they still have to spin for the same length of time to extract the same amount of water.
The only difference is the periods where the machine is idling to allow the clothes to soak for longer , and even then the machine is still consuming power.
If you have a smart meter at your fuse box you may be able to monitor / calulate the total kw/h for each wash progam.
Eco modes may reduce water consumption but thats it,

Love my Daewoo 9kg, adds extra water, rinse and can shorten wash times, also has eco bubble wash & direct drive.
Shame they aren’t sold anymore really well built machine.

What buyers of new washing machines don't take into consideration when using these high efficiency machines - the long cycle times with the drum rotating five times as much as an old machine - with less water - really wears the clothes. And the low water amount, especially during the rinse cycle, means that they end up still soapy!

Even modern machines rinse laundry perfectly by and no it's not wearing out clothes at all
Modern machines are way more gentle on clothes especially the extremely popular front loading washing machines

Ours have options for active wear, gentle wash, blankets etc. and it doesn't come out soapy at all. It's definitely programmed to adjust based on needs.

One load in our machine takes about 45 minutes and it comes out dry. 4+ hours is definitely crazy 😆
My Zanussi washes in 20,30 and 60minutea plus these ridiculously long programmes.It does a 10 kilo wash effortlessly.
Really who’s got time to make washes that take 4hrs + for each load. If you’re a busy mum/ dad. You would only manage to make 1 wash a day, and by the time the wash is finished it’s too late to hang it out, if you don’t like using a dryer! I thought in this modern world people don’t want to waste time with cleaning, washing etc.

My new Bosch washer is a replacement for a 30plus years old one.I asked them for help but they didn't offer anything that worked.I was very interested to hear about the washing liquid amounts,I will watch that.My BIG complaint is that my washing is stiff and towels are very harsh to feel and use.I had suggestions from Bosch that my towels were Old or I need to hang them outdoors or other equally unhelpful methods.I always hang out if possible and so I tried it with new towels,very luxurious ones.Like using a Loofah!!! I recently had my splendid samsung machine stop working. i investigated and realised i had not cleaned the pump filter for years. when i opened it (with difficulty, I'm 71) whole stones and pebbles fell out. I has been fine since. Perhaps something you may need to mention?
I dont have 3hours to wait for a load. This slowing down tread is annoying. I pay my electricity bill like anyone else

I am also facing issues like machine taking less water at full load. Sometimes during rinse and spin the clothes do not get wet. Not faced this issue on old machine.
just do what i do, use a wash and spin quick program before starting them to wash but do not set the machine on the spinning cycle, tumble or drain the water without any high rpms. My wash and spin takes about 7 minutes, leaves the clothes with water wich fixes the less water consumption bullshit

Hate both my washer and dryer. They are energy efficient, since I avoid using them. Always asking my self : can I wear this one more time with out washing? Feel like the clothes are beaten up a lot more, and wear out faster.
My problem is machine problems which is why I prefer to wash by hand!

Wish I kept and repaired my Whirlpool from 1990's, had new Whirlpool washer delivered and sent back because of noise, so probable watched 2-3 hours of you tube washer videos before finally finding one I could tolerate.

I got a water saving TOP LOADING washer. It 'saves' water, therefore it doesn't do a good job of cleaning. I have found a hack to solve this problem. I start the washer and watch for a few minutes as it weighs the clothes and then fills it with a pathetic amount of water. I then shut it down and restart with the wet clothes inside. Now it weighs the clothes and measures a heavier load. Now it puts an adequate amount of water in. My clothes always come clean.

I can tell you what I hate in my new washing machine: washing time 3,5h😵 and too much water usage. I returned to hand washing of most of my clothes unfortunately. I do not know what happened to constructors brains but modern washing machines are just good for nothing!. A machine bought 15 years ago was fantastic!!!!
Is the water consumption actually more? The amount of water is usually less even on a long programme.

The time displayed for a wash is the max time for a full load and is usually shorter after the programme is started then the load weight is measured and wash time is then calculated and displayed
Thank you for talk: I've just bought a LG washing machine with usual measurements; my old Zanussi m/c was a washer dryer: now I'll have to invest separately in a dryer: is it better to have the two functions separated? I've noticed the energy level on new m/c is higher. Is higher energy better( say B to C)? My new m/c has a bigger load capacity 10kg to the old one, 6kg.

My recommendation is a small commercial washing machine. They don't patronize, the laundry cleans quickly and the machines last longer! Even a small one like the LG Atom does the trick.
LG=Lots of Grief. I had one of their machines and was glad when it finally crapped out. I replaced it with a coin-laundry grade top-load machine made for the home market by a company best known for their commercial machine.
The coin laundry closest to my house has some machines of the same design that have been in continuous daily use since the early 1980s.

I think that the main problem of new washing machine is that they have weak suspension ...vs old 4 coil sprins and 3 shox ...nowadays every washer exept Miele have 2 coil sprins and 2 shox and sealed bearings ...The quality of washing is better no dout ,but they dont last long ....if you use them on hight rpm they will die for for 6-8 years ...i have complains from bearing everyday ...thats why people are looking for long warranty .5 years at least
I had both a Bosch and Samsung brand new which both where disaster machines which came off the supports holding the drum and i was told unrepairable!! I am a Single person so do not have mountains of washing! Outside of everyday clothes, linen and towels I expected the machines to outlive me! Not so! Now I do not know which machine to buy for my limited amount of washing?

I will NEVER get used to a machine that skimps on water to wash clothes…..you start a load, water comes in and the stupid thing LOCKS so you can’t see that there is no water to cover clothes……i hate me new machine.

Most people want a wash load done in less than 1 1/2 ready to hang and move onto next job. You'll have to start wash at 6am if want to hang out for drying at 9am😬
That is correct, but unfortunately a lot of manufacturers are extending wash times to try and make the washing machines more efficient. Thanks for the feedback
Put it on a timer, most modern machines have a 24hr timer you can set so your wash will be finished when you get up so you can hang on the line then you can get on with the next wash👍
@@lords-electrical more efficient what the point when the appliances are built to fail what making them more efficient to be scrapped after a few years because you can't split the tub to replace the bearings it time consumers started to wake up and demand manufactures make appliances that last and can be repaired

How on Earth your Hotpoint keeps going after 50 years is hard to comprehend. Certainly, only 20 minutes is not long enough for a thorough wash - although if it is a hot water fill for the washing, the heating will take less time.
The joy of older washing machine is they get hot water straight from your boiler so no need to fill up the drum then heat it with a element that why old ones took half the time and used double the amount of water to do it faster. All the environment laws are to blame as washing machine company's are forced to use less water and power to get that A rating they all crave and to do that they extends the time and fudge the numbers a bit were what they do is a half load not a full to get a A rating that why when people do full loads it takes longer.
@@alexnelson9512 Most old school washers only take 20 to 30 minutes to wash a full load and use a good amount of water. The old appliances were built to last. And it is Avocado Green. My refrigerator and stove is 1970 Kenmore, and they are also the same green...lol... and still work like new. If you look on UA-cam, you will see washers a lot older than mine that still work.

Thank you for your informative videos. One question; if the machine says, only 4kg for instance, how do you know how many items to load, to reach that limit?
This is always the challenge. The obvious way is to weigh the clothes but in reality that will rarely happen. If you know the machine has a capacity of 8kg then it would be a case of estimating half the load. Some machines will give you an indicator as to how much washing is in the machine though. Great question though 👍
My previous Siemens machine weighed the clothes as you put them in and told you the amount of detergent to use
I thought the same thing but if we weigh a few loads in our arms on a bathroom scale and write it down and stick it to the washer till we get a memory going then we can adjust our loads as we estimate.. looks silly but should only have to do it once so shouldn’t get caught being the crazy lady weighing clothes 😂
I do a rough estimate by hand (but, note that I have huge experience with the washing machine).
Also note, that it is not only the weight of the laundry, but also the size they take in the drum. Ideally, you'll never want to put more than 2/3 of the drum capacity loaded - for best results.
If you need to put something large, that fits the entire space (sometimes you have to) - for example, if you're washing your top mattress cover, then you'll also want to activate the extra rinse cycle, to get it properly washed and rinsed at the end.
In such cases I use the Cotton program (as it uses most water and is the best for big loads) with properly adjusted temperature, suitable for the item, according to the item's labeling (washing instructions).

At 8 years it is always difficult as you should be able to get spare parts ok, but do you want to throw money at it if something else may go wrong. may be worth getting a quote on the repair, i would say if it is £75 or less then go for it, any more then consider a new machine

I've wondered for years why it seems to be impossible to just buy a machine that does a quick wash at 60 degrees. That's all I want. Launderettes always seem to have a quick hot wash. Families often need to do more than one wash a day and 4 hours is unacceptably long. Are manufacturers not allowed to make a machine that does a quick hot wash?
They exist, we have one - laundrettes use professional machines and don't care about energy use and water use very much. Pay attention when you're buying anyway, but set it and forget it, it's not all that difficult, even if you're doing 3 washes a day.
@@streaky81 .....a machine as mentioned by wheresthesea takes 4 hrs for a wash.......manufacturers dont care about energy use obviously or perhaps they have a deal going with electricity companies.............no way should any machine take 4 hrs for a hot wash....should be 1 hour max including rinse cycle.

I would go spare if I couldn't do all my washing in one day. I typically do 4 loads and can only do that because the machine has 1 hour cycles. It is the most important factor for me to consider with a washing machine.

Detergent dosing also needs to take into account the local water hardness. Being in a softwater area, I don't use more than 80ml for a full load of pretty heavily soiled stuff.
I use pre-measured detergent 'Pacs' from the local warehouse club.
