I really miss that series. It wasn't given a chance to thrive. So much great world-building, such great chemistry between the actors, it should have found a much bigger audience.
News Radio was never the same after Phil Hartman’s murder. Science Fiction fans can never forgive the cancellation of good Sci-fi Channel shows during the Bonnie Hammer era.
Where's the timestamps when you need 0:23 - 10. Counteract 1:44 - 9. Almost Human 2:45 - 8. Newsradio 3:38 - 7. Defiance 4:50 - 6. Just Shoot Me 5:49 - 5. Taboo 7:05 - 4. Franklin and Bash 8:15 - 3. Futureman 9:11 - 2. Brockmire 10:15 - 1. Big Time in Hollywood, Fl
most of characters were unlikeable at first, nobody to really root for and they went for multiplatform thing, where people had not time/money/interest to read comics, play game and online content simultaneously to "see the bigger picture", and than it was too late to save it as the numbers went down the shxtter
Carni-freaking-vále. Phenomenal concept, *genuinely* unnerving horror, exquisite cinematography and production design, legit unbelievable cast anchored by paired career-best performances from Clancy Brown and Amy Madigan as the *original* Upsetting HBO Siblings. There are images in that show that will simply never leave your mind once you've seen them. And no one the hell talks about it. (The second season admittedly overstretched itself a little bit, but it was absoLUTEly poised to get its act together for a complete banger of a junior year. If you liked *Taboo* but wish it had gone harder on the supernatural elements, you probably want to look into this one.)
One of the most upsetting cancelations, because the creator later said that was only 1/3 of the story. He said had envisioned it 3 parts with each part being 2 seasons in length and yes the ensemble acting was superb.
I will always talk about Human Target, 2010ish, and wonder why it doesn't get more love. One hour action movies every week fantastic cast and a decent ongoing story running under the surface. The second season makes the show go out with a whimper. If you get a chance watch the first season.
Franklin & Bash was so underrated, genuinely loved the first three seasons. Season 4 was definitely an argument for cancellation though, Carmen and Pinter left such a gap, plus F&B did have a real problem with not retaining characters (God knows where Wendy ever went).
Defiance didn't spawn a video game. They were launched together as a joint deal. They were supposed to work in concert with each other over the course of the show.
Counterpart was one of the best spy shows ever made. It had great story, great acting, fantastic reviews, good viewing numbers. The only thing it didn't have was a bit of luck to land on a network that will appreciate the whole package. So much like Firefly :(
I agree, but I also think it was done. Too many series just go on and on. It didn't seem to me that the show was cancelled, it seemed like it finished.
Love that you included “future man” so good. I think one that was recent is the “the league” had so many good jokes that related to real life like Seinfeld.
Fascinating, informative and for me, eye opening, as I had never heard of most of these. However, I do wish you included the complete list in the notes, so I don't have to either keep stopping to write down the ones that intrigue me, or have to go back and watch again (ditto).
hopefully for Taboo when making the 2nd season that they do something with the sound, cause pretty sure most people said that Tom was mumbling though the first season and they didn't know what was being said.
Don't know if it ever achieved any kind of 'status' - but for me a one-season-wonder I would loved to have seen gain a following & many more series was the (to my mind at least!) rather excellent ''Flashforward''! Another fine example of a superb all-star cast, with Joseph Fiennes in the lead role, with John Cho, Dominic Monaghan, Jack Davenport & many more!, & a pretty unique premise... I thought it was bloody good, obviously I was in a minority! 🙄
Almost Human was great. Deserved so much better. I just started rewatching Franklin and Bash on plutotv this past week. Others on my list: Eli Stone - brain aneurism gives lawyer hallucination visions leading him helping people Justice - legal show where defense team defends client of the week. Went from arrest, defense strategy, public relations, trial and verdict. After the verdict it shows the crime as it happened. You got to see if they were really guilty or innocent. Felt like lawyer CSI as far as style. APB - after the friend of a tech billionaire is murdered he starts funding local police district with tech like drones and stun weapons. Was decent.
One more great action comedy series is The Good Guys. Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford as property crime cops who’s cases always turn into major crimes. A broken street light leads to an auto theft operation.
Before there was WandaVision or Moonknight.... There was Legion on FX, and it clearly influenced some other shows and films (Everything Everywhere All At Onces's director filmed one of the best episodes in the last season... and both episdoe of Legion and EEAAO certainly have some strong similarities)
I still have hope that TABOO will return - now that Stephen Knight has added the NEXT Star Wars movie (having picked up the fumble dropped by Damon Lindelof) PLUS a Peaky Blinders theatrical feature, PLUS Tom Hardy's busy dance card - I doubt we will ever see it.
NewsRadio also deserves some points for being Phil Hartman's final role (though it does lose some points for having Joe Rogan, who I keep forgetting was/is an actual actor)
"Bakersfield PD" and "The Adventures of Pete & Pete" were entertaining and groundbreaking comedies from the early 90s that only lasted a few seasons (in the first case it only had 17 episodes). It's a strange style at the time, both in humor and in the way of filming, similar to "Malcolm in the middle" which was a hit the next decade.
Some of my favorite hidden gems include: Devs Philip K. Anyone remember "Off Centre"? I will always maintain that this early 21st century small-screen jump on the "American pie" bandwagon is one of the cleverest, best crafted sitcoms ever made. A season and a quarter of bona fide comedy gold, lowbrow humor executed with the most delightful sophistication, pitch-perfect dialogue and spot-on performances by a brilliant cast. Eddie Kaye Thomas is the awkward wet blanket Mike, Lauren Stamile his vastly cleverer and spunkier girlfriend Liz, Sean Maguire his eloquent British millionaire roommate Euan, John Cho their volatile and unashamedly skeezy partner in antics Chau, and Jason George the rapper Status Quo, torn between his need for gangsta street cred and his closeted passion for all things fine culture. The late 90s and early 00s was a cornucopia of overlooked sitcom gems, and of them all, "Off Centre" takes the cake with ease. If you haven't checked it out: do.
I personally loved the show FOREVER, which was basically a cross between House MD and Highlander. It definitely had potential to go further, but it was up against the likes of NCIS and Blacklist. How it didn't manage a second season , let alone become a cult classic, I still don't know.
Let me preface by saying I love this channel, and your vids. A certain topic sprang to mind whilst watching this one. A retrospective of short-lived but nonetheless entertaining FOX shows (there is a deep well there) would be amazing. Shows like Herman's Head and Greg the Bunny that all lived and died in the 830-900 slot between Simpsons and Married With Children actually showed some promise at times, and I feel many went unappreciated...
Oh Fox was so interesting when they first came on the air. Trying to compete with the big three they were willing to experiment with almost anything -throw it at the wall and see what sticks.
One that's not on the list but deserves to be: Forever (2014). It had one season and was so fun and interesting, but it just didn't get enough attention and was cancelled. So many unanswered questions and fascinating ideas that did not get explored :(
The 2005 reboot of Night stalker absolutely belongs on here. It was the best supernatural investigation show on tv since the X-Files but was put up against a little show calles CSI (back when that was the hottest show on tv) and was subsequently crushed and canceled after one season.
For me Stargate Universe. The setting, FX & artdesign, soundtracks choice, Editing & Camerawork, Actors are so well done. Only series who has the same dark, dirty, scifi look is for me The Expanse. How appropriate that Defiance gets referenced in this video, on this month: April 2013 was the month that the show and game made their debut, 10 years ago.
Rules of Engagement is a sleeper. 7 seasons and all over the place in time slots. Not to mention Patrick Warburton shitting on David Spade is pretty funny.
Future Man was great. It’s biggest problem - at least here in the U.K. - was changing channels. Initially on SyFy it vanished to reappear (at extra cost) on Amazon Prime…which saw viewing figures fluctuate.
I loved Defiance so much that I never missed an episode, I fell in love with Allak right away because of his beliefs and I thought he was cute. I feel the show Bleep My Dad Said which starred William Shatner should be on this list, it only ran for 1 season but won an Emmy back in 2010. It was a shame when the show was taken off air.
Witchblade should be on this list. 2 seasons. It was a really solid comic book adaptation with good writing and solid characters. Unfortunately, I think when it turned back time at the end of season 1, everyone jumped ship. Which is too bad because it was good.
Being Human (UK) is my favorite unsung TV gem... the US version was fine, but felt a little miscast. Also Penny Dreadful and In the Flesh (but I saw you feature those on another recent list so, yay 🎉😊). Is Pushing Daisies a cult darling, yet? 😅🥧
Omg I forgot about Newsradio. They had guest appearances by like EVERYBODY at some point. Everybody who was anybody then. Aahh so glad to be reminded of this
Eureka should have been a bigger hit. Lots of good actors, and a great premise. Also Human Target, and shame on you for not mentioning Phil Hartman when talking about News Radio.
I love Almost Human! Karl Urban and Michael Ealy had fantastic chemistry, such a bummer it disappeared
( It seems to me ), Karl Urban is especially good in science fiction 😀
@@anonymousstrangeness7348 it does seem to be his niche 😂
@@quitti 😁 His acting is so good, he improves the quality of any movie he's in
I forgot about this show - I remember really liking it
I really miss that series. It wasn't given a chance to thrive. So much great world-building, such great chemistry between the actors, it should have found a much bigger audience.
I miss Phil Hartman
We all do!
He was so funny. ..I'll always remember him being just hilarious ☺
The world misses phil hartman. He was a blessing to us all.
Did you know him or something
News Radio was never the same after Phil Hartman’s murder.
Science Fiction fans can never forgive the cancellation of good Sci-fi Channel shows during the Bonnie Hammer era.
Where's the timestamps when you need
0:23 - 10. Counteract

8:15 - 3. Futureman
9:11 - 2. Brockmire
10:15 - 1. Big Time in Hollywood, Fl
I don't know why do it. If they use the hashtags, it could attract people searching for these shows as well.
How in the hell do you NOT mention Phil Hartman when listing the cast of News Radio?!??!
I really liked Almost Human. The show incorporated technology in ways I had yet seen at the time. It sucks it didn't pan out.
So glad you mentioned Defiance, was one of several good sci-fi channel originals that sadly sailed under the radar
most of characters were unlikeable at first, nobody to really root for and they went for multiplatform thing, where people had not time/money/interest to read comics, play game and online content simultaneously to "see the bigger picture", and than it was too late to save it as the numbers went down the shxtter
Counterpart was great actually. It was a shame it didn't go well. I also really liked Almost Human.
Absolutely loved Newsradio and Just Shoot Me.
It's a shame no one talks about The Minority Report TV series since it was an underrated follow-up to the film that sadly only lasted 1 Season.
Carni-freaking-vále. Phenomenal concept, *genuinely* unnerving horror, exquisite cinematography and production design, legit unbelievable cast anchored by paired career-best performances from Clancy Brown and Amy Madigan as the *original* Upsetting HBO Siblings. He also created The Astronauts, Nickelodeon's first attempt at a drama in YEARS, which was even shorter-lived with 9 effing episodes. Poor guy.
One of the most upsetting cancelations, because the creator later said that was only 1/3 of the story. He said had envisioned it 3 parts with each part being 2 seasons in length and yes the ensemble acting was superb.
Still watch this show once a year . And im always super sad it never got its due everything about it was just fantastic.
I will always talk about Human Target, 2010ish, and wonder why it doesn't get more love. One hour action movies every week fantastic cast and a decent ongoing story running under the surface. The second season makes the show go out with a whimper. If you get a chance watch the first season.
I watched Human Target religiously. I really enjoyed it.
yup, miss guerrero and loved janet montgomery there as well, also worth mentioning second chance with tim dekay /from carnivale or white collar/
Jackie Earle Hailey was great in that show.
Taboo is still one of the best things I have ever seen. Deserves a top notch 2nd season too.
I NEED season 2 of taboo. So good
Yesh
It's coming out this year I think.🎉
Gotta start taboo, Hardy one of my favorite actors
Franklin & Bash was so underrated, genuinely loved the first three seasons. Season 4 was definitely an argument for cancellation though, Carmen and Pinter left such a gap, plus F&B did have a real problem with not retaining characters (God knows where Wendy ever went).
Almost Human was amazing! Crushed it didn't take off. Left many questions to be answered!
Jekyll soooo deserved to be a cult hit in the US. Great show and still waiting for another season 15 years later.
OMG yes! I don't know how I came across it in the US but I was obsessed. James Nesbitt was fantastic
The first season of Altered Carbon could be included.
I loved Almost Human. I also liked Altered Carbon.
The Lost Room. Some of its DNA found its way into Warehouse 13.
Defiance didn't spawn a video game. They were launched together as a joint deal. They were supposed to work in concert with each other over the course of the show.
So glad Counterparts was on this list. I LOVED that show and was sooo disappointed when it was cancelled. It was very clever and very well acted.
I bet that if the cast was younger, people would love, and I hate people because of it, the cast of Counterpart is AMAZING
Jericho (2006-2008) and Forever (2014) could easily be on the top of this list. Chuck (2007-2012) would be a runner-up contender for the top10 too.
Chuck was great
A show that really hooked me was Turn:Washington’s Spies definitely my cult classic
Taboo is one of my favorite shows. I wish they came out with a 2nd season. But I guess hardy released great expectations which seems similar.
Is Great Expectations a movie or tv?
Actually Taboo season 2 is said to be in the works right now. I agree it season 1 was absolutely brilliant and I can't wait for season 2.
Counterpart sounds insane
Counterpart was one of the best spy shows ever made. It had great story, great acting, fantastic reviews, good viewing numbers. The only thing it didn't have was a bit of luck to land on a network that will appreciate the whole package. So much like Firefly :(
I agree, but I also think it was done. Too many series just go on and on. It didn't seem to me that the show was cancelled, it seemed like it finished.
Still watch News Radio....it ranks up there with 3rd Rock - 90's sitcom at its peak!
I loved Almost Human. I was disappointed when it ended suddenly.
Taboo is fucking awesome. James Delaney is one of the greatest characters in television history.
"I have a use for you."
missing "Titus" seriously. this has to be one of the greatest satires of the dysfunctional human condition
hopefully for Taboo when making the 2nd season that they do something with the sound, cause pretty sure most people said that Tom was mumbling though the first season and they didn't know what was being said.
Defiance and Taboo were both fantastic and definitely deserve a look if you haven't seen them.
Taboo had better be on this list.
Edit: YEESSSS!
Almost Human was fantastic. We couldn't believe it when it was cancelled. We loved it.
One that deserves more attention is Southland, that show is very realistic and gritty
Don't know if it ever achieved any kind of 'status' - but for me a one-season-wonder I would loved to have seen gain a following & many more series was the (to my mind at least!) rather excellent ''Flashforward''!

Galavant should be on this list
Yes absolutely!!!! I watched both seasons when they initially aired and I have rewatched the series twice on hulu!!!! I absolutely love it!!!!
Jericho Should Be On The List
Counterpart was absolutely fantastic
"Better off Ted" should have had more seasons
"Carnival"
"The Fades"
"Surface"
"John From Cincinnati"
Sarah Connor Chronicles?
I loved The United States of Tara and rarely find anyone who's ever heard of it before....
Introduced me to Brie Larson! GREAT show that was the perfect vehicle for Toni's talents
NewsRadio also deserves some points for being Phil Hartman's final role (though it does lose some points for having Joe Rogan, who I keep forgetting was/is an actual actor)

Thanks for the list. I'll try and seek out these TV series
Terriers and Rubicon, both brilliant sadly overlooked one season series that should have gone on for years.
Loved Almost Human
Some of my favorite hidden gems include:

I Know This Much Is True
American Gigolo

and Fargo (despite the large season count, I haven't really heard anyone passionately talk about it)
Also, I wish BoJack Horseman could've gone on forever, it had a phenomenal run, but I was never ready for it to end.
Blood drive was one of the bravest and under rated shows. 13 episodes, all unique
Raised by Wolves :( was such a great show
Anyone remember "Off Centre"? I will always maintain that this early 21st century small-screen jump on the "American pie" bandwagon is one of the cleverest, best crafted sitcoms ever made. News Radio was my favorite show from the 90s, had all the great comedians, Never forget Community and the creator destroying it.
Lodge 49, Profit, Early Edition, Vinyl, Robert Kirkman's Outcast
I never saw Defiance, Big Time or Taboo but i still watch all the others whenever possible.
Thanks for spotlighting Counterpart. Loved that show.
Almost human was dope as hell!
Let me preface by saying I love this channel, and your vids. A certain topic sprang to mind whilst watching this one. Happy to say, I've seen every episode of News Radio, Franklin & Bash, Just Shoot Me, Future Man, and Brockmeyer!
Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes
I knew I recognized Taboo. Such a great show- and I need to rewatch it.
I loved Defiance and its game. Surprised the game lasted as long as it did, long after the show was ended.
Quite a few shows on this list that I thought everyone forgot about. Glad to see them get some kind of attention.
I don't know if it is or isn't considered a cult hit but "Better Off Ted" would fit this description.
I liked “Just Shoot Me” and “News Radio”.
Taboo was so good!! Everything Tom Hardy touches turns to gold. One of the best actors ever.
Sarah Conner
Tru Calling
Farscape I find it insane that more ppl don't know or never heard of this early Sci fi channel gem. Hands down one of my favorite all time shows.
OMFG! Defiance was SO GOOD!!! They created an entirely new language for the Irathient.
Sad that it happend before the streaming era (Netflix, Amazon etc with big production budgets) and hosted by MGM who f**ked up the marketing
Here are my picks: Kyle XY, The Pretender, Wrecked, Tower Prep, Happy, Wolf Lake, No Ordinary Family, Unnatural History and Aaron Stone
Forgot about Kyle XY! Great show!
I completely disagree with you on Taboo. It is a vanity project that failed to delivered on its intriguing premise.
The decision to shut down The Double, however, is beyond my comprehension.
How appropriate that Defiance gets referenced in this video, on this month: April 2013 was the month that the show and game made their debut, 10 years ago.
Loved Future Man, such an underrated show
It's almost criminal that you mentioned Lovitz but not Hartman...
I feel bad for forgetting Newsradio. This show was sooooo good!
“Utopia”from Channel 4 never got the love it deserved
Rules of Engagement is a sleeper. 7 seasons and all over the place in time slots. Not to mention Patrick Warburton shitting on David Spade is pretty funny.
Future Man was great. It’s biggest problem - at least here in the U.K. - was changing channels. Initially on SyFy it vanished to reappear (at extra cost) on Amazon Prime…which saw viewing figures fluctuate.
I think you could add Terra Nova and Alcatraz to this list. Both really good shows.
For me my favorute cult TV show is La Femme Nikita with Peta Wilson.
I can give you one of the principal reasons Firefly was a success: Morena Baccarin. Shockingly beautiful woman.
A great show that sadly got canceled after one year was Backstrom. Rainn Wilson was fantastic
Counterpart, Almost Human, News Radio, and Just Shoot Me were such great shows!
I used to watch News Radio when I was a kid. It's the only place I know a lot of those actors from
They aired Almost Human episodes out of order after the halfway point which messed the storyline up too. Hated that it ended.
Babylon 5
Omg I forgot about Newsradio. They had guest appearances by like EVERYBODY at some point. Everybody who was anybody then. Aahh so glad to be reminded of this
Eureka should have been a bigger hit. Lots of good actors, and a great premise. Also Human Target, and shame on you for not mentioning Phil Hartman when talking about News Radio.
