testing out Gamblin oil paints!

- Gamblin Artist Colors sent me a package full of lots of supplies! i hardly use oil paints so it was fun to experiment and play around with these different art supplies. i hope you guys enjoy this fun little video :)

-gamsol is an oderless thinner made by gamblin, it's 'studio safe' and less toxic than other thinners. You can use it to clean your brushes after you're done painting and you can also use it to thin down the paint. When I do a first layer or an underpainting I like to us gamsol with the paint because you can get everything covered up quickly, it dries quickly so the next layer of straight oil paint has something to stick against.
-underpaintings or staining your canvas is good to start out on because it will create a middle value for your painting. If you're starting out with a completely white canvas your values can be off because you're comparing everything you're putting down against the white background. This will tend to make the whole piece not dark enough. If you start with the middle value down it is easier to find your 'darkest dark' and your 'lightest light.' I usually start out with a yellow ochre/raw umber blend and dip my brush into a little cup of the gamsol and then into the paint. You can then make a 'blueprint' for the rest of your painting using more paint for darker areas. You can take a clean brush with some gamsol and remove paint on your light areas. This will give you 3 different values on your intial layer so you can block in where things go and see their relative values before going in with color. Also if you don't cover everything up a little bit of the underpainting will shine through instead of the bright white background. (I have some vids on my channel if you need to see examples or theres lots of other great channels here on youtube that will show you how, "Paint Coach" is a really good channel!)
-gamvar is the varnish. you don't need to use that much, it goes really far. I don't like pouring it right on the painting, I pour a little bit into a cup or a bowl and then I kind of scrub it into the painting for the first layer, I let that set up for 5-10 mins and then I go overtop with another coat. I brush horizontally from the top to the bottom once and then I go vertically from left to right. With oil paints sometimes the colors will "sink in" this means the oil is being wicked into the canvas and it has a matte finish, the varnish will bring back the colors to full saturation and make them *POP*. That won't really happen so much with acrylics so you might not notice a big difference on those paintings but it will create a nice protective layer.

I have become a Gamblin user. There's a human warmth and friendliness to this company. Don't forget, Camileon, they have some other lines of their own paint as well, and they have various free how-to, and explanatory, videos online. A teacher I had phoned Mr. Gamblin and encouraged the company to add two new colors to their arrays. In about 6 weeks, it had been done!! Their paint has worked nicely for me for many years. 'Cam', you are very talented. God knows what you may be doing in 10, or 30, years!

OMG Gamblin sended you oil paints?! OMG😱 i wised i got that mutch paint. I am so happy for you Camileon. I wanna start oil painting and i ordered cheap frence oil. The brand is called pebeo and its commin on wensday. Ita a set of 30 colours in 20 ml tubes. I also bought a acrylic paint set from pebeo cause i love acrylic paints. I started whit acrylic paints and now i wanna try oil paints. And if i am good i wanna try Gambin oil paints. They are so beautifull fibrant. 😊🖐🏾👋🏾👍🏾
