A woman carries the history of mothers, grandmothers, sisters who have been raped, who have been forced, who have been surpressed, who have been touched without permission, who have been harassed, who have been silenced, who have been threatened. I can say this because I have a mother, a grandmother and many women in my life who have been the victims of men in this way. I myself have been a victim.

I spent quite a while this morning looking on UA-cam for healing prayer which uses inclusive language and honors the equality of women and people of color. I found that here is no such prayer on the internet, as far as i can tell. Thank God I found your comment which sheds the beautiful Light I was hoping to find on UA-cam, not only for myself but for so many women who strive to love God and to build a world where our equality, and all people's equality, is respected.
This is cleverly presented and amazing. And actually enraging in demonstrating the male 'privilege' mindset that women are objects first. Does anyone think the man would have done this to a man he encountered at the PO? This guy gets the award for having missed all understanding of respect for women and his behavior is just another showcasing of here in 2018 we still have a way to go before men get it... Way to go Tracee for such a well done, insightful talk.

so a community of humans must live in a completely touchless society? that isnt how humans are built. ive touched or tapped plenty of people (male & female) on the shoulder, had to squeeze past them, all without 'consent' to 'violate' their body. this isn't a 'spectrum' causing rape and actual violation.

Oh man I cried. I’m a survivor of sexual abuse and it is sad how we rationalize and it’s just normalized. I used to not even believe in women empowerment cause I didn’t want to scare men away. Why do we do these things to ourselves to attract men instead of standing up for ourselves!

Thank you for this Tracee👏🏽It’s so important to acknowledge that as a society we still have a long way to go to combat patriarchy and ethnic supremacy that is still very dominant throughout the world. Although progression for equality continues to get better, it’s still difficult for women to stand up for ourselves, particularly women of color when we are the singular minority in our work environment.
Tracee Ellis, you're remarkable! We need more talks like this, and explanations added to pop culture and scripts.
Mutual respect is all we need
This gave me chills. Watching it, I thought back to every creepy male manager who ever commented on « how nice my outfit looked on me » or the uninvited back caresses or touching my hair or telling me « smile, sweetheart, you’re so pretty when you smile *for me* » . If you’ve never experienced this kind of objectification, then you really are not an authority to comment on why women shouldn’t feel angered by this. Telling people to do things they don’t want to do or touching them uninvited should make anyone angry. The problem is that it happens disproportionately to women and girls. If you haven’t lived it, you don’t *get* it, so you don’t have the right to say it’s not a big deal.
Yes, it's difficult for men to relate to behavior they never experience but the same can be said about women, right? Imagine we collect a number of anecdotes about mean women, would that be helpful for anyone?

There are a lot of single good looking women out there crying because they can't find a man to put up with them (except for white knights, male feminists or feminizers... It's typical to hear of a woman complain about these things when their actions and victimhood/empowerment narrative is literally the thing hurting their prospects for a bright happy future with marriage, children and family, to those women who so desire the fulfillment of nature's course.

This TED talk is a perfect example. Women moved to utter fury and desire to physically assault someone. Physically being moved without consent could possibly be ruled as battery, but aggravated assault is hardly a logical response.

The entire speech was built up about a singular event that occurred in which a man moved a woman. So the claim here is that men objectify women? Because the rest of the video falls under the pretense of that statement. She's basically suggesting that women are the victims in society and that we should blame men for women's faults yet disregards that women should hold their own accountability as well. She provides no real examples of how men are at fault for women's behaviors, but still makes the statement "It is man's responsibility to change man's bad behavior". I hope you're aware that men overwhelmingly have the highest rates of being victims of crime?
She just iterated one story of a woman, who was violated, yes she was violated, as he didn't even have the basic decency to just say, "Excuse me", but there are so many stories, of men doing so much worse than the above story, to so many women. And I get it, it's not all men are predators and not all women are victims. But enough men in the world have this mentality, that just because it's a woman, he can do absolutely whatever his heart wishes with her and she would not make a sound. That's how his brain is functioned and that's how the woman's brain is functioned. As women, we are still told to this day, that "boys will be boys". And that we are just to accept what they do to us. I have no intention of undermining the struggle that men go through, but in this context, where we are obviously discussing women's issues, we should highlight that with more emphasis.
@@roopsharoy7156 I don't disagree with you but i will say that the facts are in our current society is that there are way too many advocates for women than there are for men. There are way too many false claims against men of all kinds of accusations if you look at statistics, and yet society today will still favor women indiscriminately. Taking a look at our court systems, they will always lean towards the women's side in almost every situation regardless. This has become an issue for men in recent times as there aren't that many organizations/movements that fight for men in comparison.

It has been several yrs since I stumbled across this video. I had a recent incident with a man that brought this video fully back. In 2023. This video has withstood the test of time and is still relevant. Of course I wish we'd had more progress.
As a man I must say, that this was very elequant (sp), and put words to feelings I have often heard friends of the opposite gender, try to express. I see myself as a feminist in many ways, and I still found new thoughts in this - thank you!
If you cared more about statistics and logical arguments then you do about elegance of speech and feelings you would be less likely to be fooled by con artist weather of the used car salesman or the dictator verity.
If you don’t agree with the analogy, it might be because it’s very hard to show someone a different gender’s social issues. It’s similar to how an upper class white person will never fully understand the racism put on a dark person of color.

^ I guess I wasn't being too clear then. I included economic status in the comparison because there are some upper-class people of color who can avoid a lot of racism, but now that I'm thinking about it, I'm sure even they can't escape it. I wasn't trying to say they can't understand the economic troubles of having less money, but the social ones like being stereotyped or unintentionally or sometimes intentionally discriminated against. There's just no parallel. You won't be able to fully understand it unless you live it, and you can't.

? There's nothing wrong with being a victim. You can still be a victim and not let it hold you down. There's nothing wrong with trying to better your situation and make yourself not a victim. Again, I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. I'm not saying that if you're discriminated against you shouldn't try or let it run your life. This is a completely the opposite of what I'm saying. Take control, and try to show people the problems. My main point was that no one could ever fully understand some of the troubles of being a woman similar to how many people will never fully understand what it's like to be discriminated against because of the color of their skin. I'm not saying those people should be submissive to it. They should speak out and advocate for change (rise over it) like how Ross is doing in this video.
You are basically saying that empathy, putting yourself in other peoples shoes, is impossible. Thankfully for everyone you are mistaken. Saying a black person cannot know certain things just because of there race, is racist. The same is true of all other groups it is racist to say a white person cannot know something because of the color of there skin. Your creating divisions in society that do not exist, we should be uniting each other and not dividing each other and asserting that we can never be undivided. Ross is not advocating for change, she is complaining about nothing and demanding that other people change in ways that she does not specify. You can't just demand people fix the problem you have to actually come up with an idea that address the issues, she failed to do that in this video.

I almost can't believe the knee jerk reactions of most guys in the comments. It's likely most did not listen to the whole talk. It's guaranteed they don't comprehend the talk. The question is why and did they even try?
The perfect case in point is they guys who say they would react aggressively to a man grabbing them to move them. These guys don't have the empathy or intelligence to put themselves in the place of the woman, who is fearful because that is the ingrained response for her. _And the very odd thing is that this is the experience of their sisters and mothers, their cousins and aunts their wives._ You brave, insightful, brilliant guys need to explain to me how it is you let your family be subjected to this.

I am furious that I am not yet in a position to reach out to her and get a reply. I will find safe and positive ways to work my way up the ladder though. Blessed love.
I think the example she used was well chosen. I highly doubt a man would move over another man the way the man moved her friend at the post office. It was a gentle, soft yet significant example in the difference of how men's and women's bodies are treated and respected in general (not every case). I don't understand why people are being so harsh in their comments. It makes no sense to me. In fact, what is truly confusing is how misconstrued her comments and opinions are in other people's comments.

Tracee Ellis Ross could not have said this any better. This is the same conversation that I was having with my sisters. Men are absolutely responsible for how they behave and the change begins within them. At first, I thought "eh, it's not that big of a deal. He moved her. Just laugh at it" but then what she was saying makes sense. Those tiny moments symbolize how women are used and abused. Majority of cases you hear of human trafficking is of young girls and women. You've heard countless stories of women being beaten in domestic violence scenarios. This tiny case of her friend being moved just represents the larger picture.
"Majority of cases you hear of human trafficking is of young girls and women.", that is until you look beyond the media frenzy which loves everything feminist and look into the actual cases and you find that young boys are frequent targets as well. "Men are absolutely responsible for how they behave." yes and so are women, so stop telling men "you have to change!" and actually have a proper conversation with them over what you and other women have trouble with, and then LISTEN TO HIM AS WELL, the solution has to be fair to everyone and that does not just include women.

Lol. I'm so fed up with this group politics that suggests that everyone from a certain group behaves a certain way. Not only is it wrong, but it's downright prejudice. Also, the heavy majority of domestic violence is committed by women against their husbands or boyfriends(who are usually too scared to admit it) but, due to biological facts, men can cause more serious harm in the cases when they do attack. It is a myth that men are oppressors of women; that's not only wrong but also a Marxist way of thinking. Men and women are different. Both have problems. All this victimisation is only marginalising the problems that men face and blowing women's problems way out of proportion. When a feminist says they care about equality, that's a lie. They don't even acknowledge that men face, at least, equally important problems and all they want is a system that allows them to gain access to the top of hierarchies without having to work for it by saying that it's because of oppression instead of work. It'd be nice to see people who actually want to help everyone, for once.
I expect this to be a very controversial topic that flares up a lot of emotions, but, all men are not terrible and all women do not let things fly by. However, in general, men need to have more respect for women. Not all men are disrespectful. Not all cases of abuse and trafficking or whatever else is about women and girls only. Yes, it happens a to boys as well. But, in today's society, women are not respected. We have shifted from that notion. Our young boys are growing up thinking that it's okay to just look at a woman anyway they please. Young girls are growing up thinking it's okay to settle for less and not value themselves. There are men out there who understands the value of a woman and will not ask her to lower her standards. There are men who will step up to the plate to do whatever it takes to honor a woman. And, on the contrary, there are women who have lowered their value simply because "it's hard to find a good man." That's some women's issue. It's not okay to feel like you have to compromise your self worth to find a man who will respect you or just to settle for less than you deserve. Some of you just need to sit down and analyze what Tracee is saying here.
It does seem sometimes that even when you try to “ play by the rules” you still lose. You still suffer people (women and men) who help themselves then blame you. It was what you were wearing, or you should have known better etc

Wow.... Let's just continue to DIVIDE, right? My entire life has been completely ripped to pieces and stomped on and washed away and had to start completely over THREE different times. I had the party of my life for YEARS on end. But I was still missing something. I had unfinished business..... I KNEW this wasn't how thing were supposed to be forever. And then I realized something.... If EVERYONE treated everyone else the way they have been wrongly treated a few times..... the WHOLE WORLD would be filled with horrible people. I KNEW that if everyone stayed bitter and stayed DIVIDED, the World would have NO HOPE. But I knew this wasn't true. I KNEW that I was a truly GOOD Man. I KNEW I deserved much better and I KNEW there must be someone out there that deserved the same. Now..... I have MORE than I could ever imagine. What we have has completely made my past pain, hardship, and life disaster worth every second. And it works because BOTH of us have looked past those few OTHER PEOPLE'S transgressions against us for so many years..... And we always will STAND TOGETHER.

I think this would have been a better talk had it not been completely based on the moving of a person. My initial thought was, what if he was autistic? Or what if he'd asked her to move 5 times and since she was, what 60 I think she said, she didn't hear him? I feel she didn't provide enough "evidence" or any of her own experiences to make this believable. Her mind was made up and it sounds like she scrounged up "evidence" to support her point. The lady wasn't even handled in a sexual way and her whole talk was on sexually abusing women. I would think the story would be better used on an ageism talk.
I can understand the points at the end, and they are very good points to follow but shouldn't it be "people" and not just men who have to responsible for their actions.
Why am I thrown I with the majority men because some people find it ok to put hands on other people. No, it's not ok to move someone to get what you want without using words, but it's no less wrong for someone to move man out of the way.
Why am I being made to feel guilty for the people who came before me. I happy to be responsible for the last 30+ years of my life after all it is my life. Change is compromise and it will take everyone to reach that goal, pushing blame solves nothing, alienates people and hurts your argument.

Punxatowny i don’t agree with her making this into something that only men do, but I don’t think it’s okay to move someone if they are blocking you. I think it’s best to say, “Excuse me” and if they don’t move you can just intrude and get what you need, but I wouldn’t move someone else.
It pisses me off personally when someone puts their hand on my back or anything motioning me to move like they can order me around haha. It feels like a passive assertion of dominance haha.

Okay, but I'm a women and this never happens to me, or I don't remember I dunno. No one ever took a phone out of my hand. No one ever made me feel like I shouldn't be angry. Maybe it's the generation gap, I know my mother was treated as less inteligent by her father.
