This is so popcorn can pop faster. I place my plate of microwaveable food (except popcorn) on a clean dry bowl to raise the food off the lower center area meant for popcorn. Elevating the plate will also eliminate the problem of over cooking areas that get burnt, dry, or rubbery while other areas are still cold.

only uncoated paper plates should be microwave safe. Other paper plates have a plastic coating.
Seeing the scorch marks from the aluminum foil tests made me laugh.
having food on the plate before you microwave is prevents the plate itself from reaching such high temp;....
