The fun thing is that even with his awareness of being in a movie, Benedict just holds a monologue hamming it up for a camera and he *doesn't know where it is*. He just naturally assumes that if this were a movie, the camera would be on him, and he is absolutely correct.
Exactly, Benedict never meets Charles Dance but Charles Dance, like Dalton, was a Shakespeare stage actor so knows that, on stage, the focus is on him. (Macbeth, Othello, King Lear - its the monologue that actors love doing!) It's strange because in contrast Slater/Arnie Shakespeare setup in the film where he goes "To be or not to be...Not to be" they go with an explosion which I always thought that Hollywood would rather blow something up then let an actor use their skills to keep the audience - something the theatre would do!
Well, he probably predicted it because he saw how Slater usually performs an arrest. What he wouldn't expect is Slater coming by with the IRS saying that he was under arrest because Benedict had been not declaring taxes on his status us a hired assassin and should have filed himself a dependent of his boss or declared his income for the last year under federal law. Benedict: "This...this...this is not in the script! Outrageous! I demand my agent...unhand me! I deserve a proper death over a building top not jail!"
At this point in the movie, he has realized that he can only be killed in a climactic scene with the hero delivering a pithy one-liner first, so he doesn't have to worry about about being killed randomly by trucks driving through his house without warning.
I think his little "I'm the villain" speech should've been a bit longer and grandiose but still his turning to address the audience is such a great moment.
