    The way the green and red were combined to create that deeper pattern is what surprised me the most. The blend of blue into the dark red looks seamless and give it a lot of life. The grain of the paper definitely lends to the texture. Reserving room for the highlights is the hardest part for me because I usually try to mark them out and leave behind traces. This is a really good tutorial, especially for texture.

      Thanks so much! I Love all those points you made. As far as marking out where highlights go, maybe try very light pressure for the outline of this highlights. Some of the more textured papers (like Pastelmat and sanded papers) do a great job accepting light colors over dark. ☺️

    I was looking for how to color an apple in one of my coloring books.
    This video is just what I needed, although I will be watching this more than once it certainly has given me a great start.
    Your finished picture is as realistic as I have seen. Amazing.
    Thanks for the smiles.

    I really love this video. Cool how you layer the colours in the same order an apple ripens on the tree.

    I like your apple. I tried to follow along with my 100% cotton hot pressed fabriano but the color pencils still would not cover all the white areas and it was not smooth like yours. How did you get it so smooth?

    • @Sharpenedartist
      @Sharpenedartist  2 роки тому

      That Fabriano paper is a great paper! I think that having an incredibly sharp point on the pencil combined with short strokes, and light pressure is how to achieve the smothness. I hope that helps. :)

    Thanks, Jon.........would you share the brands of pencils you use and perhaps a demo on why you use them and in what context? Do you ever paint landscapes and if so, what are your suggestions for a beginner? I love your Podcast with Lisa. Lots of information, discussion and fun. Thanks so much.

    Great video! Could you please make a burnishing tutorial? I seem to have a hard time with that part of drawing.

    • @Sharpenedartist
      @Sharpenedartist  8 років тому +1

      Hi there! Thanks for the comment. Yes. I do plan to create a video on burnishing (pressure that flattens the tooth of the paper) . The biggest thing to remember when burnishing is to make sure you have enough pencil down first before you start applying pressure in order to eliminate the white of the paper. :)

    Is there a reason why you didn't finish blending with OMS?

    • @Sharpenedartist
      @Sharpenedartist  5 років тому +1

      Hi Chandra! Mostly to show that it's an unnecessary technique. Colored pencil can be easy. The techniques can be quite simple and the pencil selection can be few. Learning to draw and see how light and shadows work? That's the challenging part to drawing. I teach students to focus on the final outcome and composition. Not the technique. Modify the technique for the result. I hope that helps!

    What exactly is the purpose of a complementary color scheme if one must end up using multiple different shades, tints and tones of red any way? Why not just start off with, and finish with different shades, tones, and tints of reds? As long as the colorist is aware of basic value relationships and understands how light affects form, what is the point? I try to understand the theory behind complimentary color schemes, but I get hung up here.

    • @Sharpenedartist
      @Sharpenedartist  2 роки тому

      Thanks, Zach Alicea, I'm glad you asked this. The reason behind has to do with the end result. By the time you're done, if you've only used a lot of reds, it can look very drab and "lifeless". If you compare against one done with complementary colors, you end up with something that you can actually see through the semi-transparent layers of pigment using this soft layering technique. I hope that helps explain my opinion better. :)
