I found a spellbound double cd compilation of Split Enz at a thrift store for $2!?!?! yesterday and this song is on it... Absolutely fantastic song! I have it all on LPs but this one is really good, it's on repeat!!
Anyone ever hear a more tightly produced song? Every note and drum beat is perfectly laid. No wonder why there aren't many examples of this song performed live.
A Podcast here said that Mushroom Records criticised the last two albums saying "I am hearing a lot of art and very little commerce" This music suits their more quirky sound, the 1980/82 period had several straight ahead focussed early 80s synth pop songs that hit, but before 1980 and the last two albums, this one and 1983's Conflicting emotions were more of the old creative (Hippy musical collective, split enz with the mandolins, violins and weird keyboard effects we loved). If anything Doctor Love (Cliched title, howmany songs called Dr Love are there?) and I walk away are their most straight ahead commercial pop songs ever!

Never understood the derision aimed at split enz for this latter music, its superb.

All of side A is very good. Pretty well any of those songs could have appeared on the first Crowded House album if not already recorded.
Thanks for the update 🏆
