Wow! Another testament to the fact that Bill still lifts jazz drumming to new levels. I mean, this is an unbelievable balance act between mind and body (ideas and tools)!!!
I got to study with Bill when he was fresh out of Paterson back in ‘89-90(?) and he’d come up to UCONN to teach jazz drums. He’d bring that snare, or a cymbal or his bass drum (but not all 3 at once) and we’d trade 4’s and 8’s as part of the lesson, and he’d stress musicality over chops. I was basically a jazz beginner but he challenged me in that year to expand my ears and phrasing.
WHY DOESN’T BILL STEWART HAVE A PATREON? I’M SURE A BUNCH OF HIS FANS WOULD PAY SERIOUS MONEY FOR THAT. BILL: IF YOU’RE READING THIS, PLEASE HELP US OUT!
Félix Rousseau Yes! I noticed that too!!...I think he does it so he can use it as a instantaneous voice! Also, to get away from the 2 & 4 timekeeping!!!
All are awesome. Man can Larry Goldings play! I see him as outside the Jimmy Smith thing - more akin to Dr.Lonnie Smith, to Jeff Palmer in that all three of them bring/brought a unique vision to the Hammond.
Bill is simply one of the best ever....Completely unique...Truly inspirational
There are drummers .. many drummers .. different levels and skills .. then there is Bill Stewart
And then buddy joe moreel I Tony Williams gene Krupa
Yes them too I could go on forever

Woah, can we just take a moment to appreciate how fucking good that bass drum sounds? That is a true bebop bass drum sound.
Agreed. Those Canopus kits are all over town. I saw Kenny Washington playing the same one (Yaiba) at the Village Vanguard. Great drums!
@Jaiden Hector That's creepy. It sounds like it would be healthier just to get out of that relationship.
To each their own, right? Throughout the clip I was kind of distracted by how awful I thought the bass drum sounds. Great drummer though, obviously.
Great player! instantly identifiable
when he plays!!! very original style!!!!
I love this Trio..!
Such a trip to hear that tasty comping on the snare coming from matched grip.
Doesn't matter what kit he's playing; it always sounds perfect. Nice and open and melodic across all drums.
Great playing!! And that Canopus Yaiba kit sounds just as good as Bill's Gretsch drums.
Thanks for uploading, I simply cannot get enough of his playing...!
Incredible
These 3 still sound the best together .
Wow, that was really a pleasure to watch. Absolutely nasty! That made my day. Thanks for uploading this!
what a snare tone!!!!
Awesome Bill!
The most musical and underrated drummer ever.
He's rated exactly where he belongs.
Beyond Jazz into zzaJ...and back.
Without excessive bombast,Bill's playing is always heroic.
Holeeeesheeeeit that was good!!!!
Maestro
Thanks for uploading this. Cheers.

Ludwig Hammered Brass Supraphonic Snare 5x14 + Bill Stewart = THE DRUM SOUND
14x6.5 i think
This is my Ludwig brass 14X6.5 - Bill likes to use it on his gigs over here in the U.K.
@@joelbarforddrums Is that your Yaiba kit as well?
@@tonymcroger7447 No, this is the house Canopus Yaiba kit at Pizza Express Soho London. Just my snare 🙂
I just noticed he takes his left foot away from the HiHat pedal often when soloing. Interesting. Sounds amazing.
Félix Rousseau Yes! I noticed that too!!...I think he does it so he can use it as a instantaneous voice!
Also, to get away from the 2 & 4
timekeeping!!!
That’s part of his musicality and phrasing ability. It’s another texture. Gives it some space and breaks it up a bit.
0:39 - Left-hand floor tom, left-hand rack tom, two bass drums. Repeat. #insane
To think that he plays not wanting to impress allways is admirable.
Master jazz drummer
Cool, still has that killer bronze Ludwig snare that he's had forever!
Part of his sound...love it
Those buzz rolls at 1:50!!

I rarely see jazz drummers use match grip, seeing this helps me not feel like such an idiot when I do it!
Many of them do nowadays. Bill Stewart, Joe Dyson, Justin Brown, Ofri Nehemya, Ron Bruner Jr, Marcus Gilmore
Yessirrrrrrrr
Man, oh man.
love it!!
Damn
Is that in andys stomping ground?

Little Green Man

@@kylef4784 You’re welcome!!
I like these guys for the same reason I like the Dave Brubeck Quartet: the players are tasteful and musical over showing off.
I thought the year was some polyrythem from the video lol
