- Yes its true I grew up on Catalina Island! Come experience what its like to live here. Meet some real islanders including DEER and BUFFALO!
This is not the tourist video you're used to seeing. (Sorry no Catalina Wine Mixer). BUT I promise you will get to see a whole new way of life and some beautiful views in one of the most unique places in California.

The Real Catalina Island - A Local's Tour
Thought I'd add a few more memories!
-The Glenmore, summer 1968. I had just graduated from L.A. Pierce College and I was on my way to UCLA, I decided to spend the summer in Avalon, I don't remember why I chose to go first to the Glenmore, I don't remember ever having stayed there before, but I was in luck, as the new owner, I. Newton Perry, needed a dishwasher for the the little restaurant just off the lobby, called The Broiler, whose manager and chef had just quit, leaving one really nice lady, named Betsy Busby, who had been the waitress and was now the short order cook... and I was there to help her. I was given a room and, if I remember correctly, a little money. I worked some, roamed Avalon a lot. The town doctor then was Dr. Staff, who gave me my physical for the entrance to UCLA.
-The Glenmore, 1972. Graduated UCLA in 1970, not happy with the jobs I had had. Where had I always been most happy? Avalon. Had enough money to last a week to get a place to live and get work. Gregor Milne, Glenmore manager, was working front desk at the Glenmore, I got a room at $50 a month and he directed me to the Mole and to Dennis Reitinger, of Island Baggage Service. I got a roof over my head and work. I even had a phone installed in my room! I had a key to the front door of the Glenmore for when they shut down over the winter. I lived at the Glenmore from June of 1972 up to March of 1973 when Jeanne Sook Hill got me a little place right next to hers and hubby Bill's house up on Eucalyptus on the alley, also for $50 a month. At this point I was working with Cliff Lashlee out on the Mole, for Long Beach Catalina Cruises. While working at the Mole over those 5 years I got to work closely with Duke, aka Leo Duke Fishman, one salty old lifeguard, the offical greeter of Avalon. I left the Island for Maui in September of 1977, Duke passed a few months later. I remember getting a letter and a poloroid picture of his new Datsun 240Z shortly after arriving and prior to his passing. Made lots of friends in Avalon, many have since died, but I still have lots of great memories of them and Avalon.

Heading to Catalina next week, staying @ Hamilton Cove so we will have a golf cart too. So stoked. Doing the 3 hour jeep interior tour, renting a boat, etc. Can't wait!!

This was such a pleasant video! You are just so likable and easy breezy. I'm a LA native and have been enchanted with Catalina Island since I was a little girl. I've been there many times and have the fondest memories of horseback riding, this little taco cantina by the golf course, even a school field trip to the marine biology camp. I've convinced my husband that we should retire there someday. How lucky you are to have grown up on such a hidden gem! Thank you for this video, I cannot wait to show it to him.

I went to Catalina last year for a school trip with my environmental class! We stayed at Fox landing, and I fell on love with the amazing views!!! I really want to go back and visit Avalon and the local beaches! Because I only stayed in a small cabin and did class activities.😆🥰❤️❤️❤️
oh that's amazing though!! its so beautiful there because its completely undeveloped land and crystal clear water! but next time come visit Avalon, there's so many fun things to do here :)

Thank you so much for the tour I've been wanting to go to the Catalina Islands , I used to live in San Diego but me and my husband moved up to Sacramento where his family is but: I've never been to the Catalina ,my son has been there several times ,and loves it, and he's always on a cruise every single year and stops off , to visit the island, my other son lives in Las Vegas so I'm going to go and see him and I'm going to stop off at the Catalina see you then Bye thanks for the tour I always tell my oldest son take a lot of pictures I want to see what it looks like never thought of Googling it but I went to UA-cam and I saw you have a great day

@@ShannonKlein oh my gosh...everything! But the fact that there were literally no cars, & my hubby & I were able to walk everywhere! The walk to the Eco tour zip line from our hotel was especially beautiful, as it was right by the ocean. And we didn't know that when we got there, we would be treated to the beautiful beach with the cabanas and gorgeous views of the ocean!
We loved it so much we are already planning to go back next month! P.S...the zip line was fun but I think once was enough for me 🤪 I think we will definitely be doing the parasailing again tho!

This video is such a gift. I live in Orange County and see Catalina from the distance often (except when there is a lot of marine layer or better yet...smog!). I've been privilaged to visit it once on a 3rd grade field trip. Went on a cruise back in 2005, but the water was too rough to tender to the island. Been wanting to save up and go for a while (...once all this has passed). Thank you for this awesome behind-the-scenes tour of your HOMETOWN! I have a few places I know I plan on visiting.
When you think about it, we're really neighbors, just separated by 22 miles of ocean.

another air head tour..LOL.... bring a bicycle or ebike, great snorkeling, fishing on Catalina,,!! Back in the 1980s and 1990s there were very few tourist traps there. I went there with friends (Lisa and Kyle) who lived there. They had a very nice 50" boat

Love your energy and joy! I used to live in Avalon. Chet's Hardware was named after Chet Smith, once married to Janie May Stamford-Smith, from the Stamford family and the Hotel Stamford. So long ago... so many fond memories of so many wonderful people and places.
Well you should talk about it and maybe even make a video or several vids about it . I would love to know more about what this place was like in earlier times .

Am I right or or am I wrong , as I am under the impression that a lot of people who grew up there and used to live there no longer can afford to do so .

The other day I watched the video with Jill st. John and Robert Wagner talking about what it was like when they first came to Aspen Colorado.... it had one paved Street , all the other roads were dirt roads , there were many lots... it was just wonderful them talking about how great it was back in the day when everybody could afford to live there she said it was a classless society and it was wonderful hanging out with everybody .
She said now all the rich people there make damn sure everybody knows just how rich they are .

Can you talk about how expensive it is to live there ? I know that in many places that are nice more and more people are having trouble being able to afford where they grew up . I'm assuming Catalina Island has to be a pretty expensive place to live due to the limited space for housing .

I see it all the time driving down golden lanter in Dana Point or from San Clemente or Newport or Laguna, and it makes me wonder, what the opposite views are like? Can you make a video of what the Southern California coastline looks like from your perspective? I bet it’s amazing, you are so lucky!!

In the early 60s I went to Catalina every summer. A friends family had a boarding house I even went in the winter. It was a lot more laid back and way less crowded way before the cruise ships
You got there by steamship(SS Catalina) or flew by seaplane sadly there long gone now. Those were great summers

I used to go to a summer camp out there when I was younger! One of the elective choices the campers got to choose was to go to the backside of the island...man I WISH I could go back to shark harbor. It was so beautiful. I fell though and got a nasty cut on my thigh from the rocks HAHA but it was so gorgeous.

You're so freaking cute! I love your channel, I went to Avalon a few times while I was younger and I loved it. I went last week for the first time and had such a beautiful time. I stayed at the Hermosa Hotel and ate Lobster trap every day. Went on the hummer tour and had a blast. The Casino was closed :/ never been there yet. It would have been such a cool and unique experience to grow up there though. Keep on making videos! They inspire me to get out more 😁

Joshua Rialto ...i’ve also compared Monaco and Catalina! The palace over looking the harbor, the Wrigley home over looking the harbor, yachts from around the world docking in both places, great fun on the 4th of July with the islands spectacular fireworks combining with those being launched from the yachts! (I sit up at the bell tower for a great view of both) I also say for an hours travel from the mainland, you can be in a Hawaii like place....love what Wrigley and Renton did there!

OMG, a local - I love Catalina and have been going every year for the last few years (living in LA, so it's right in my backyard!) Love hiking, snorkeling, jet skiing, miniature golfing (LOL) and just chilling. Love the sound of the beautiful bell on the point behind Zane Grey Pueblo hotel. Last year I went there to finish my book for the music industry (I'm a USC professor and former musician) and this year I took my brother who flew in from NJ to just enjoy the sights. I'll likely be back for a day visit this summer. Do you still live there? If so, you'll have to point out that first view you showed off --- I couldn't quite make out where that is.

Wow, great Island vlog!!! So I am heading down this Saturday!! I'm fact getting off the Express on Saturday...arriving from Oregon!! Have family there that has grown up on the ialand... My ex was born...well LB born but raised on the Island. I am related to all of the Felix side. My ex's father worked the sanitation there for many years. His name was Mouse. His picture is in the Locker Room (bar) Idk if you know Jimmy, or Albert and Nichole. Anyways it has been years since I have been back, but I LOVE it!! Hi, lovely video thanks. I'm coming from Phoenix for Thanksgiving - first time visit. Will I need to wear warm clothes and a winter jacket etc?
Yes! It gets cold in the winter, the ocean breeze makes it chilly. California is weird and has random warm days in the Winter but I would bring clothes for 50-60 degree weather. Hope you have a blast there!

This was awesome to watch, I grew up in San Clemente and visited Catalina twice, loved it each time. I'm in my thirties and I move around a lot, I'm used to working in tourist towns where money can be tight and I'm definitely not rich... is it realistic to consider moving to Avalon? I spend a lot of time in Waikiki and South Lake Tahoe, where housing can be expensive, but I'm used to that. I also usually cook in restaurants wherever I go and I was wondering how that scene looks lately. Anyway thanks for the tour, the island looks great!
I love Santa Catalina Island. I went just over a year ago, and my first reaction was where is the tiny little hospital on this island and how can I get a job in it and live here forever? Lol. I love it. I’d like to explore more of it than just the immediate Avalon area.

unfortunately the casino stopped playing movies as of January 2020, it was really sad news for the islanders! they would play one new movie a week, with one showing per night. we are hoping they bring it back! they still plan on using the theater for film festivals and events in which case they could play classics!
