Vielen Dank, Herr Lauterbach.
Wonderful video! Just popped up in my recommendations today and it reminded me of my first stays in Germany in the mid-1980s, visiting Kiel and Hamburg from the States as a student. It was magic and I ended up moving here for good a few years later. Thank you for capturing the magic of those times on film!
Thank you for this video, my mother was german and as a child I was used to go to my grandmother in Hamburg in summer for one month at least. You brought me back in the past, in 1982 I was 12 and I remember well that I was there in that year.
Glad you enjoyed it. I got a lot of stares traveling through Hamburg with a video camera and portable VCR. However most folks were still relying on 8mm cameras, and I got sight, sound and motion.
May I ask what kind of camera you recorded with? In my memory 1982 is a quite early year for a VHS camcorder, isn‘t it. In my family, they still recorded on 8mm for years to come. ;) Cheers
It was my second Portable VHS camera and VCR that I had taken to Europe. It was an RCA 0011. media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/c6/23/3b/c6233b6c54a39e7926368d590c4a7e48.jpg. It was connected to a Panasonic portable VCR (professional 2 head model), and it was indentical to this: ua-cam.com/video/umizUDkFHUo/v-deo.html Thank you for your interest. I hope you liked the visit to Hamburg. Please share this video.
Thanks for leting me join your private film. I was grown up in Hamburg and still living here. It is quite interesting to see and remember how my city used to look like and compare it to now.
I was about a month and a half old when you shot this. If I ever get the chance to go to Germany again (I saw Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle, Salzburg, Austria, and Berlin that time), I'd like to see Hamburg, especially for the Miniatur Wunderland model railroad. Parts of the city, at least in this film, remind me a little of Seattle.
Reply. First, I agree that VHS was not the best format, but you have to realize that this was the early 80s, I had the best consumer level video equipment of the time. Second, it sat in the cassette for years before I could digitize it. There may have been some degradation of quality. But all things considered I was a pioneer, because most people were still shooting 8mm film which had no audio. So I could archive a memory of the city that few others could. I continue to video record events to this day in the Greater NY Metro area where I reside. However I shoot everything in 1080 60p now. I could use 4K, but 1080 is fine for UA-cam,
@@chrislauterbach8856 I do agree by sticking to the 1080 format, 4K eats too much hard drive space on your Computer. Years ago I used a Bolex 160 Macro Zoom super eight movie camera. This camera I still own. Thanks for replying.

This was in the days of camera and portable VHS recorder combo, connected by wire. It used fill sized cassettes. I hand a RCA camera and a Panasonic portable recorder. Weighted a ton.

Great time capsule of my home town, which I had left 2 years before this video was made (though I have been back many times since). Other than the incredibly racist joke the boat captain tells at 17:00 (for which he would be fired instantly nowadays), it's a riveting document.

Oder doch Beta-Video? Beta hatte ein deutlich besseres Bildqualität als VHS. VHS hatte sich 1982 noch nicht durchgesetzt.
Wahnsinn. Tolles Video. Fantastisch.
Die beste Zeit in Hamburg in den 80er.
