I will add my thanks here. I have an old Viking Designer I and stopped doing embroidery for quite some time because I was unable to do much with the floppy disk storage format any longer. I am getting back into it with the purchase of a used Brother Dream Machine 2 and having fun re-educating myself. I have a bit of a crazy question. What brand/model scissors are in the video (the black and white ones with the mint green comfort grip). I love the look of them. Thanks again!
Without knowing which babylock, I can't tell if you want to transfer with a USB stick or WIFI? You don't need the 5D software to transfer designs. Just drag the files to the folder on your computer that you want to transfer to (USB or WIFI drive). You'll be dealing with PES files for a Babylock, so try searching the internet for PES design transfer if you need step-by-step instructions. I don't have a video on that yet or I would link it for you.
It may be a while before I do anything with hats, since I don't own a single cap to stitch on. Maybe a facebook group for the Babylock Alliance or even the Brother/Babylock multineedle groups could help? They pretty much consider the Alliance like the multi-needles since they work the same way. I DO know the Brother & Babylock machines are not the best for hats - the hoop won't go down low enough and people complain. Have you looked at the new hooping system that's supposed to fix that? I hear it's expensive, and still waiting for reviews on it.

I’m trying to find a machine as my daughter’s scouting troop is interested in investing in doing their embroidery work in house. Hats and shirts are the main objects to embroider. I see in your comment here that those machines are problematic as far as how close to the bill the design can be stitched. Would you recommend focusing more on the sewing machine style single needle units? I’ve scheduled a demo with a Janome dealer I’m very familiar with. My next stop will be the brother dealer. But I was really setting my heart on the professional style machine even if it has one needle. I do have to really make the proper choice though as it’s not my personal investment. I’ve discovered your channel and have found it immensely helpful in my research for beginner embroidery. I am a free motion longarm quilter, so I’ve got some basics but embroidery is a unique beast to tame I’m learning. Thank you very much for sharing your honest perspective and your knowledgeable insight. It’s been indispensable.
@@anitra7747 Thanks for the questions. First of all, the regular single needles are NOT good for caps. So stay with the rotary hook style like the Persona you're looking at. I see a lot of complaints about the Janome multi-needles and steered clear of them. The Brother/Babylock machines do well with hats but not as well as the commercial brands. HOWEVER - there is a new cap driver for those machines that people are raving about. I don't stitch caps but it sounds like for the extra expense of the newer hat hoop those issues are solved. If the logos you will be stitching have multiple colors - spend the extra money on the multi-needle if possible. Changing threads on the PRS1000 is a hassle in my opinion. Talk to as many dealers as you can, and let them know you're shopping around. You might get a better price if they know they are competing for your business. And finally - consider the time it takes to do machine embroidery along with the cost of the machine. Many people find that doing it in-house is not as cost effective as they thought and their machines wind up on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace in nearly new condition. :-)
I am really new to machine embroidery. When you find the center on the shirt, is that where the center of the embroidery design starts, or is that where the top of the design starts? Thank you
The design center is in the center of the hoop. You'll want to position the design on the shirt with that in mind. Practicing on fabric first will give you a feel for how your machine will position the design 😉
yes, you absolutely need stabilizer even when practicing! Otherwise the thread will not stitch correctly on the flimsy fabric and it will look terrible.
Both videos show the traditional and floating methods of hooping. But the positioning video has extra steps to ensure the design is placed exactly where you want it. If you're putting a design onto a finished item, you'll need to do the positioning each time. (like centering a design on a shirt) But for practice you don't need to position the design. And for in-the-hoop projects it's not important since the first stitch usually shows you an outline of where to place the fabric. Hope that helps!
Well that's interesting. Is that documented somewhere by Brother or Babylock? Or could it be a calibration issue? My needle certainly appears to be smack in the middle of the hoop center guidelines when the designs starts at the center mark.
I was surprised too! All my brother templates are off on the vertical line. When I have my plastic template inserted into the hoop the vertical center line on the template is to the left of the vertical center line on the hoop. But the horizontal line is fine. For that reason I use the actual hoop markings as a quide line. I print up my design and center it on the article to be embroidered. I then use that print out as my guide to make sure all is centered and in line with the hoop markings. My embroidery software prints up with a visible grid.I don't use my plastic template. A quick tape measurement of the area verified that the plastic template was off about 1/8" running the length of the design. It took me a few tries and couldn't figure out why I was off center. Now I know!

Those are an old pair of Wescott scissors. And that Dream Machine is a big step up from the Designer 1. Have fun with it!

Where do you get templates
Design templates either come in a PDF file with you design download OR you can print your own if you have software like Embird or Embrilliance, etc.
Just an FYI. The little “marks” on Brother and Baby Lock hoops are not the exact centers. They are off by a few millimeters.
