I get tons of emails every week from people who are blown away by the fact that I taught Pino Palladino. Here's a few stories about Pino that you might want to check out! Enjoy- Joe

It is funny to me to hear you tell these stories, because I have myself a few story that I shared With Etienne M'bappé back in the eighties ( 84 to 87-88 ). I remember that he was 21 at that time and I was 24.
Etienne was already a killer bass player and above the level of most of the pros of that time and became better and better over the years.
I couldn't teach him nothing of course because I was the one who was constantly asking him things to improve myself and was a complete beginner too ( but I must confess that he got sick of me chasing him for lessons because he did not like teaching ).
All that was way back before the " black gloves time ".

Joe, I think I'm doing better than Pino. I've been studying with you for a little while and I'm booked in the studio for at least 10 years! Who cares that the studio happens to be my spare room?

Well, how can you not? Did you take any lessons from Joe? No? Ah, it sounds like you’re full of horse manure! However, there was this duo, and they we’re using a 4-track PortaStudio, and their demos were killer! So in their apartment, they not only convinced an amazing guitarist called Alan Murphy to record, but he instantly became an additional member of the group. The other was Pino Palladino who also heard the demos and joined whole heartedly. That group was Go West. So mr. Wise-whatever, how’s your 10 year plan working out for you? I bet you, that four years in the spare room, you’ve done absolutely nothing because you’ve met nobody to exchange ideas with, as music is a social affair. Otherwise it’s mastrubation. So you’ve got six years left on your “master plan”. After, apply to Berkeley as an experienced “Mastru -bat 4:01 or”

Thanks for the stories Joe.I really enjoyed hearing about how your student became a lifelong friend.Sure we all love Pino's playing but your commitment and generosity towards improving us mere mortal bass players is a true gift to our fraternity.

I found you again! We met on Gary Numan's album tour. What an amazing guy you are. Honestly, for me, you are one of the craziest but best bass players in the world, and a martial artist as well! Hahaha, you crazy guy. Are you living in London now or in Miami? Are you touring or teaching?
Hey everyone, Smokin' Joe is the real deal. Him and Dick Morrissey (Saxophone) are my favorite musicians.
Sending much love Joe,you are looking great!Oh this may surprise people again but for me,smoking Joe is a much more interesting player than Pino, just listen to his playing on Gary Numan Warriors album, now that's S**T hot playing!...

You are right, the first Go West album has great bass by Pino, thanks for the tip! Users, please note that the first song seems to be synth bass. I believe Wiki said it was done before the album deal (and Pino).

Pino was involved before the album deal. In fact, he did all the demos for this project way before Go West were signed.

Mr. Hubbard, of course a big thank you is warranted for a book that you transcribed in the late 80s-early 90s, that had four songs of each player who were: Mark King, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, and Jaco Pastorius. Back then, we used a tape recorder, and our ears, and occasionally a book (no tab bull crap), would help with verifying that all the hours spent trying to learn Marcus Miller’s solo on a Lee Ritenour song was actually quite good. The intro to Come on, Come over, was helpful, and Chromatic Fantasy a nightmare.
So for that thank you sir.
But in the Pino “story”, some of us remember when and how he started, before he switched from classical guitar to electric bass. So get some clicks for using his name, but be a little humble Joe. I was on duty the night Jaco got beat-up. It’s not for laughs.
Now let’s see your discography, cause I’ve never heard or saw your name on the sleeve of any albums.
You let me down Joe! Like George Anderson didn’t have Pino’s number!

He and Pino were watching the Jaco Instructional video and they were LAUGHING at Jaco’s inability to play “Portrait of Tracy “ in the homeless state he was in at the time and he’s actually laughing about it AGAIN here? Is that funny to you? Seriously?

    • @JoeHubbardBass
      @JoeHubbardBass  4 роки тому +4

Not laughing maliciously dude and even though Jaco wasn't in the best of condition he still was playing his ass off on that video! The observation was regarding the guy who pretty much invented harmonics couldn't remember the tune that changed the world while everybody who was coming up had learned that. I guess some people just don't understand irony. Tip- start watching old Monty Python more...Jaco would have gotten this!

Man, Joe just answered you but your comment reached me as a moralist, extreme kind of one. It seems like a spreading virus because many people like you are making huge efforts to find a little something wrong in other people. How could any bass player make prejudiced thoughts about Jaco, especially on their own bass theory UA-cam channel? Come on dude!

Joe Hubbard Bass You weren’t laughing “maliciously “? I get it, you were just “having fun” laughing. As for your Monty Python advice, I’ve actually performed on the same stage with Terry Jones, so thanks. . Also we don’t know what Jaco “ would have gotten”. There, I’ve already said my 2c and besides that , your channel and teaching method is fantastic. It’s just that your laughing while talking about it rubbed me the wrong way, that’s all. And I’m not one of those “easily offended” types..Just sayin’...
