clive fucking thomas desperately trying to find a way of disallowing the first goal even though it rebounded right into the back of the net from phil neal's clearance.

In the 5th round the blues were drawn away to Southampton.
Jim Mc Donagh was back in goal and had an outstanding game at the Dell in a 0-0 draw. In the replay thousands were locked out, due to Alan Ball and Kevin Keegan in a very strong Saints team. Many of my workmates from" across the park" a were at the game. Everton won 1-0 in extra time. And in good time to have a few pints in the old Hale Road Labour club before going on nights at the Docks.
Ironically after defeating Arsenal ( unbeaten in FA ties since 1977.)
This Liverpool side who were dominating the domestic game. The Blues came unstuck against Man City, who had been struggling in the league. Leading 2-1 at home late in the second half, Imre Varadi contrived to miss an open goal after going round the city keeper, Joe Corrigan. Instead of leading 3-1 City broke away and equalised minutes later. The replay was lost and an end of season collapse saw the board sack Gordon Lee. Who knows what would have happened if Varadi had have scored. Lee would have been saved. And confidence and results maintained.
Jim Mc Donagh also left after one season at Everton

We had chance after chance in that game should have been a rout, they still managed to snatch a late goal, then we had to sweat waiting for the whistle

That happened so many times in derbies in the late 70s and early 80s. Everton would take the game to them, create good chances, squander them and Liverpool would either hang on for a 0-0 or nick it 1-0. They only really properly put Everton to the sword once in that era.

If Hansen had sprinted back he may have stopped the first goal.

They beat Southampton in a replay the next round. Then they lost to City in a replay at Maine Rd.
