The voice recording in the start is between a Russian and chechen general. They've fought together before the fall of the USSR in battle only to have to attack eachother. In the recording the chechen was begging the Russian not to go further because he knew they would die and the Russian did take a little pause to think. Only a handful of the 1000+ men in that brigade survived a following ambush and the Russian did die in battle and the chechen later died in a prison I believw

Most likely, the head (the president) decided to make a quick rush to the grozny to scare away the chechens (or they just wanted to make a war catastrophe for some reason) Being on the station, brigade was surrounded, and were shot from 2 chechen positions, a 5-floor house at the front, and bunch of wagons on the railways, close to the station. There was like 3 attempts to reach the trapped battalion, but again, due to lack of preparations and overall brain issues of general (Pulikovsky) who ruled that group of attackers, none of them arrived. So the commander of the battalion, I. Savin, decided to extract the brigade with its own resources. they divided on 4 groups, and while meeting some chechen forces, most of the soldiers managed to reach russian forces. Sadly, Savin died during that battle. Yea, it appears my english isnt that great for such speeches. Lol
