  • A wet and miserable day which started at Hinckley station as we witness the departure and arrivals of class 31 services on Norwich/Birmingham services. This is followed by class 31 haulage to an equally miserable Leicester station in very wet weather showing the departure of a northbound HST service and a view of Leicester TMD as seen from the platform. This sequence has been transferred from Super 8 cine stock.

This is BR as I remember it: grimy, dank, trackside stuff (wires, random bits of wood, sleepers, rubbish) strewn everywhere, embankments unkempt, minimal safety signage, mechanical signals, point rods, oil puddles, filthy trains clanking and sputtering. Objectively worse than our railway today in virtually every way, yet with an undeniable nostalgic pull for what feel today like simpler times. This video captures it superbly.

Too true. Even the flagship 125s are filthy.

@@ep1981 and any old dude could board a unit and use the toilet cos the slam door carriages were left unlocked. Staff were surly, cabbing was impossible depots were off limits and ticket inspectors were worst of all.

Apart from the crap strewn everywhere and rampant lineside veg, which the privatised railway is equally guilty of. There must be hundreds of thousands of pounds of scrap rail scattered around Britain.

That's the reality of nationalisation, esp when the government had other priorities. Privatisation in my view has been successful broadly and has increased rail use. What was a failure has been ticket pricing and lack of rolling stock,

@@duncancurtis5108 Late 70s and early 80s were great times for railway enthusiasts. I never had issues with staff and depots definitely not off limits. A group of us used to do Stratford, Willesdon, Old Oak Common on a regular basis. Sneaked into Toton a few times and had no issues. Did a few other places too like Guide Bridge over the years. Favourite of them all was Stratford. Used to walk all round the place, take pictures in and out of the sheds. The staff knew we weren't causing trouble, we just wanted to see what was on shed and they let us get on with it. Great times. Now West Ham attempt to play football on the site.

Steam-age infrastructure, but with so much more character than what's there today!

What on Earth happened to that HST power car? They usually kept them pretty clean, but that one looks like it's had a can of used oil thrown at it.

Blocked cooler group fins leading to engine overheating and spewing oil out. Obviously got it going since but not cleaned up.

I think there were maintenance issues around that time resulting in loads of oil being thrown out. There were certainly coolant issues, I remenber new st having tanks on brute trolleys at the end of rhe platforms to top them up en route. That's why they all had the valve sticking out of the radiator grille. The faults were all ironed out eventually.

I'd agree with 31/1s still on the Norwich trains. A couple of years later it was 31/4s exclusively.
