Why the Doctor has to be such a brat? Whenever the poor Master tries to help him, he rejects his offers! The Master did nothing wrong and deserved better!
It is possibly due to this version of The Master not being a proper Time Lord regeneration. The Master tried to do a 13th regeneration and it left him a barely living walking corpse, only kept alive by force of will. To survive, The Master hijacked the body of Nyssa's father and took it over. He regained some youth and became the way you see him here. Although The Master could survive this way, to quote one of the books he considered it a ghoulish existence and he wants another set of time lord regenerations.
