    My name is Ian and this is part of a series documenting my helicopter training in the Robinson R-22. Follow along as I go from zero experience to my goal of becoming an instructor. This lesson's main focus is as an introduction to off-airport landings. There's a lot more than you might think that goes into landing a helicopter in an unfamiliar, uncontrolled area. This video is not intended to be a substitute for instruction with a Certified Flight Instructor.

    At 19:37, that looked ridiculously close to getting your right skid caught under that rock...

    All your videos are good, but this one, in my opinion, is the best so far. Thanks for sharing your journey.

    Great channel. I just stumbled across this and it brings back a lot of memories. The owner of your school used to be my flight instructor at the dreaded Silver State at KBAZ. I'm enjoying these videos. Thanks

    As a fixed wing man you and Mr Aviation get most of my attention away from Demo Ranch. This is why I love Texas

      Brian H thanks! Glad you like them. You don't have to check every day though. I usually upload once a week around the weekend. If you hit that little bell, it'll send you a notification when I upload. See you around!

    I enjoyed the clip. Seems like the downwind checks are rushed and said out of habit. My instructor caught me doing this when he pulled a fuse. I checked everything except the fuel and confirmed everything was fine while the fuel gauge was showing empty. Quite embarrassing, but definitely the first and the last time I did that.

    • @CriticalAngle
      @CriticalAngle  7 років тому +1

      +Ian Fraser that's funny and I agree. That's the exact same thing my instructor did to me. These videos are a little older. Now, I slow down and actually process each gauge to verify that it is what I'm saying it is.

    so around the 17m mark, just trying to understand, were you simulating a high density altitude by agreeing not to raise the collective past a certain point, or was the helicopter genuinely not able to climb out of ground effect without forward speed? I guess that's what the mock approaches are for, is to find what manifold pressure just barely lets you climb so you don't exceed it for practice?

    • @CriticalAngle
      @CriticalAngle  7 років тому +4

      Andy Plater yeah we genuinely did not have the power to do a max performance takeoff right there and you're right on with the mock approach. What we're looking for is the current manifold pressure when we see the Vertical Speed Indicator begin to show a rising trend. This lets us know how much of a cushion we have between our climb power and our maximum power. Down below tree height, that cushion will be even smaller because the wind won't be helping us out down there. There is no special practice manifold pressure, only the maximum power that we can demand of the aircraft. We use the same amount of power in a training flight as we would in any other kind of flight.

    He wasn't too worried about skids straddling protruding rocks?? An unexpected gust from the side might have made for a really bad day, no?

    • @tasercs
      @tasercs Рік тому

      I was more than a little concerned too as that right-hand rock seemed to be all around the right skid.
      I also saw another pilot's video once that suggested coming up a little more vertical from such ambiguous areas before moving off forward as he was once snagged on a very flexible branch that he couldn't initially feel but as he was moving forward (and was fully committed) he was lucky that it gave way.

    "Okay ATC won't let us come in because there's a few airplanes flying around. We've been hovering here for 20 minutes orbiting around this one spot waiting for them to give us clearance we are getting low on fuel we have less than a quarter tank which is our minimum so we're going to go ahead and land and this guy's backyard. Winds from the Northeast. Obstacles the man standing in his backyard. Performance keep an eye on the manifold pressure and the tachometer and your airspeed and make sure your gauges are green and the warning lights are off. Path in over the neighborhood street and into this man's backyard. Path out this mans backyard. Surfaces the grass. Additional notes watch out for a well armed farmer. m.ua-cam.com/video/mXSi9F8_xKo/v-deo.html"

    Now I understand why a fixed wing pilot would want to get a rotorcraft rating.

    @14:29 what is he asking you to push down?

    • @CriticalAngle
      @CriticalAngle  6 років тому +3

      He's saying to turn off the carburetor heat. Basically, heat from the exhaust is able to heat the air going into the carburetor to prevent carburetor icing. The carburetor has a Venturi tube in order to create low pressure to pull the fuel from the tanks into the carb. Higher pressure (fuel tank) always wants to go to lower pressure (Venturi). The low pressure causes lower temperatures and can cause ice to form. The catch side to this heat is that it also robs the engine of power. We turn off the carb heat when we are about to come into a hover so we have the most amount of power available.

    • @austinkamps3654
      @austinkamps3654 6 років тому +1

      Critical Angle ahhh "carb heat" I kept hearing different things and couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was. Thanks for the explanation, love the videos!
