  • My name is Ian and this is part of a series documenting my helicopter training in the Robinson R-22. Follow along as I switch roles from commercial pilot to instructor. On this multi-part series, I'm switching to the left seat and learning how to teach a student to fly. This is part 3 where I primarily focus on teaching running landings and a few other maneuvers to my instructor who acts like the student.
    Video Highlights:
1:00 - Normal takeoffs and patterns
    3:30 - Low Rotor RPM
    4:56 - Running Landings
This video is not intended to be a substitute for in-person instruction with a Certified Flight Instructor.
Outro Music: "Invisible" - Vibe Tracks

Hey guys! Just a quick update. Sorry it's been a few weeks since I've uploaded. I recently started a new job as a Flight Instructor, so my schedule has just gotten quite a bit busier, and I just needed to get used to that. I think it should be good now for being regular with the videos again!

Great videos, wanted to ask why do you wear the gloves and what kind are they?

Your mic was cutting in & out a lot. Maybe the squelch could be turned down on the audio panel?

Yeah I noticed that while I was editing. I was actually messing with the squelch during the flight. It was either a ton of wind noise or voice cutting out. It's isolated to this flight though.

I've noticed in a few planes that different brands of headsets each require their own squelch setting. I've got the lightspeed like you, and I always have to turn the squelch down for the comm panel to pick up my mic on that headset.

Yeah it can be a little tough when you have mis-matching headsets in the helicopter to get the squelch that works well with both.

Seems like once you're instructing an instructor-in-training, you can just troll them endlessly. I can't wait! :D

Good grief, students really do try to kill their instructors. Great videos, I'm really enjoying them. Congratulations on the instructor gig!

For instructors teaching a fixed wing, tailwheel pilot to perform this landing tell them to do a "wheel" landing with respect to attitude. This was quite easy for me having done hundreds of wheel landings in a taildragger.

I'll see if I can get a commercial student to go do those and record it.
