Think Differently about Exposure

    In Digital Photography, Exposure is controlled by Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO, often referred to as the Exposure Triangle.
    While the Exposure Triangle helps remind us that there are three controls for Exposure, it's not very helpful when working out how each of these controls works together. So instead, I like to describe Exposure as a Pie or Pizza, let me explain!
    For a typical landscape photography senario, I try and keep the ISO near the base ISO of the camera. More of the light needed to expose a scene correctly comes from either the Aperture or Shutter Speed. I want everything in the scene in focus for many of my landscape images, so I need a larger Depth of Field. To achieve this, I narrow down the Aperture resulting in less light being allowed to pass through to the sensor.
    While this approach doesn't directly improve the images you take, the more comfortable you are with controlling Exposure and the operational side of taking a photograph. The less you'll have to think about it when on location and the more headspace you have to focus on being creative.

    Great improvement to visualise the 3 exposure components. In explaining the increase is contribution from the shutter when minimising ISO and aperture you describe the shutter speed needing to be longer. It feels better to me to say that the shutter opening time needs to be longer (or slower).

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Derek, you bring up an interesting point that I struggled with for several months when I first started creating video. I totally agree with you, it's the shutter is open for longer. Speed can't be longer, but it's often referred to as longer. In my early videos I'd sometime say the shutter speed is longer and then interchange "longer" with "increase", but increasing Shutter Speed means the opposite. I should have either made that point or be more clear. Good pick up mate! 👍😀

  • @ReidThaler

    I like the pie analogy as it does a better job of showing the interactive relationship. I think it's a misnomer to describe ISO as sensor sensitivity control, as its really a signal amplification control. People can relation to increasing an amplifier and the music gets louder--and more distorted. Same with ISO: the greater the amplification, the greater the noise.

    Great video Andrew - love the graphics over the content specific video - nice. I remember the days of slide film and more than one time removing a 64 ISO roll (being careful not to wind the tail in and remember how many shots I'd taken) and replacing it with a 400 ISO roll. The fun of film - I take digital only these days. Saw a quick grab of Horseshoe Falls in the video - I recognised it as I was there yesterday. Just watched that Tassie video again now, and you captured some great images. A tree has fallen down on the right of the falls to the displeasure of a few photographers walking away saying "the shot was ruined". I took another tack as I am always looking for a different shot. Just put it up on Instagram if anyone is interested. Look forward to your next video Andrew.

    I really like your slices of pie analogy for understanding the interaction of exposure time, aperture, and ISO, but wince a bit at ISO described as changing the sensitivity of the sensor, which is a fixed property of the sensor, rather than amplification applied as information is read out of the sensor. This distinction might seem to be an irrelevant nit until one turns to explaining a strategy such as taking advantage of ISO invariance. Come to think of it, I’d love to see your talents as and educator applied to that one.

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks Michael, you are absolutely right, the readout is amplified, rather than the sensor itself being more sensitive. I was thinking about grappling that aspect this video, but decided to take it out (along with a few other bits) to keep the concept simple. I may well take on your challenge and explore this aspect in a future video. As always, I appreciate the value you add to the discussion mate! 👍😀

    I find the use of a triangle or pie confusing. I have heard some cinematographers use the idea of a pipeline rather than a triangle. For me, this aligns more with how I think my camera works and allows for inclusion of elements such as [CP,ND,UV] filters (which you show yourself using in your video, but you don't mention as they don't show up in the triangle metaphor). I like to think of it as a series where the light first passes through filters, then aperture, then shutter speed, and finally the sensor applies some iso. I could see using the pie metaphor, but I think you may need a slice for filters. Thanks for posting.

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  3 роки тому +2

      This is an interesting point JP. I see filters are in someways slightly different an in others ways similar to the other controls. Some filters are used to control the light (rather than controlling the exposure). You could argue that's the same thing, but there are differences, like a graduated filter let light on to part of sensor/image. Where the other exposure controls effect the entire image. Some filter reduce the light across the sensor, I see that more similar to waiting for the light to fade in the evening, it more an environmental thing...before it enters the lens. Either way, the pie analogy can be extended with another slice, as you mentioned, to accommodate for filters. I really appreciate you share you thoughts and adding value to this discuss mate, thanks! 👍😀

      @@Andrew_marr I really find these videos and the discussion useful. As a total beginner/amateur with all of three months experience under my belt shooting a manual camera, I yearn to make something amazing come out of my camera. I have already experienced several moments when I feel like I need another slice of the pie to achieve what I see online (and this is where your metaphor really shines) for my current lack of any ND or CP filters. Keep up the great work.
