- A rower has gotten up close and personal in a stunning encounter with a large pod of whales in the Atlantic Ocean.
UK-based ski coach Tom Waddington found himself surrounded on Sunday, July 7, by approximately one thousand long finned pilot whales, while rowing more than 100 nautical miles (185.2 kilometres) off the Newfoundland coast.
The school of whales accompanied the solo rower for two hours, as he continued to undertake his 2,000 nautical mile journey to raise funds for mental health charity, Mind.

They may be guiding him
Why would we think that there are 1000 whales?
Bro is from the maga school of counting. 100 = thousands.
Most of the time to grab your attention or promote engagement in the story, a media outlet will embellish a story or headline. In this case, the traveler say’s excitedly, “these thousands of whales”. So it seems as though the media has ran with that statement, since there would be no real way to be quantify the amount of whales there.
That’s not even close to 1000 whales
They are showing their support. No need to be afraid.❤
What an "Awesome" experience, discovery, and scene. In my opinion.
Thousands??? C'mon, be realistic, no dramatic!
They look like dolphins to me
What happened at the end?!
Flipped his boat
At the end, he made it to shore unharmed and posted a video.
All days i'm running into forest with THOUSAND of dinosaures around me... 😂🎉
That's freaking scary! Ocean mammals never cease to amaze!
Definitely dolphins. Whales don’t form large pods like this, they have large dorsal fins (whales have small or no dorsal), and their dorsal fins are sickle shaped rather than triangular (porpoises have triangular dorsals).
It's a globicephale a species of little whales
amazing!
It's a scary, lucky sailor
I guess he made it back to share the discovery or was it uploaded live ...
Dolfins? It’s like saying: look at all these buildings WOW, but they’re just one or two bedroom houses…
Technically a dolphin is a toothed whale
Wow!
👍🏻very cool!
They want fish..give them fish
Perhaps offering protection from sharks?
Aquaman rowing a boat?
Not so sure those are whales. Maybe porpoise?
