You could homestead if you arrived soon enough.
But I think you had to make use of the land to own it.
Most of Nevada is owned by the federal government, and is just sage brush desert.

One thing I never understood is how the sheriffs are so silly 🤔 And the so trustworthy Cartwrights are always getting in trouble for doing the right thing. We intend to have everything we want by stealing and lying and immoral.
