TUTORIAL: Granny Squares Block

- Hello Friends! It's been quite a while since I last made a quilt block tutorial! (Two months! Eek!) So I thought I'd share with you how to make the block I've been swooning over the past week - the Granny Squares Block!
Until last Tuesday, I had never made this block before and was quite unsure how it came together! But with a little research and experiment, I realised just how simple the construction was and just how utterly adorable it is when finished!
Measurements and Cutting info:
- This block is made up of x25 3.5" squares. (You can cut your squares bigger or smaller depending on how big you wish the final block size to be!)
- The block is usually made using three to four fabrics. (I've chosen to use four.) But can also be completely scrappy if you wish!
- Of each fabric you will need to cut:
~ x12 white squares for the background
~ x8 green squares for the outer section
~ x4 cream squares for the inner section
~ x1 mustard square for the centre
Follow the steps in the video to see how to layout the block design and piece each square together.
FINAL BLOCK SIZE: 13.5" squared (approx.)
Fabric bought from Kelani Fabric Obsession www.kelanifabri...
~ Natural Unseeded Homespun

Thanks!
One of the greatest things you demonstrate is how to square up your blocks. Thank you so much, this is an awesome block, which I am going to try using a jelly roll, white and mixed prints. You are always an inspiration.
Just found your channel. Love how simple you make this block. Thanks for sharing and now am going to explore your other videos 😊😊😊
Yay a new block tutorial, this is such a cute block and the fabrics you used are great. I have got to get me some of that Cotton + Steel fabric!! I love that quilt behind you in the intro, you really do have such a great eye for putting you fabrics together.
pomomary Yay!! Thank you!! :D
This is by far the best video I found on how to square up / cut the edges from the block. Thank you!
I knew there was a reason why ive staied away from this block, its because the squares are too small in the tutorials ive seen in the past but i know i can cope with 3inch, so now im thinking i will try this block now. Thanks again for a great video and easy to follow instructions x
Beck Alexander Yay! That's wonderful to know! Can't wait to see a pic of your block on Instagram! ;)
Going to try this block today by cutting up some jelly roll strips into 2.5 squares, and also using some Moda candies that I have. So cute! Thanks, Amanda!
Oh yeah, thank you for showing so clearly how to line up your ruler in order to trim down the block- very helpful!
Cheers! :)
Ann

Ah-Ha! That's what I did wrong...I tried to cut the triangles to piece them to the outside...grrr...now it seems so obvious!! lol Thank you, thank you so much for this tutorial. I'll be making another block today following this :-D
***** You know, that's exactly what I thought I had to do too!! But then I was sure there would have to be a more simpler way to do it! So, I'm glad I've been able to help you understand the block! :D
PS. I've just seen your re-make of the block on Instagram and it looks perfect!! x

+AWAHC Hello and welcome!! :)
Hi, I am a new sub to your channel. I just adore you and your teaching style. It seems we have the same taste in fabrics too. I would love to see your take on some applique blocks. I love applique especially flowers, vines and so on. Looking forward to seeing more of you.
R MARTIN Thanks so much for your lovely comment! I've been thinking about doing some applique block tutorials for a while actually... I think I better plan some now! :D
Oh please do. With your creativity and unique fabric choices, I know it will be awesome!
Awesome video! Thanks!
Thank you!! :)
Love these blocks! Are you using them to make the baby blankets you were asked to make? Love the fun color choices! I also love when you say, "confidently trim off the excess fabric" because sometimes it's hard to be confident that your not messing up! Great tutorial!
Liz G Yes, I am using this block in one of the baby quilts I'm making! I've made four blocks so far and I'm really happy with how they're progressing and sit harmoniously with each other!
Thanks for your lovely words about the tutorial! I think it's important to be and to feel confident in what you're doing and I love reminding people to be so! This simple encouragement can mean a lot to some! :)
Great!
Do you have a photo of the finished quilt to show us? Love the fabrics so It would be nice to see the whole quilt.

Can you make one out of flannel for a baby. I'm having trouble keeping everything straight and binding it! Can you give me some tips please!
Roy Mojica You should be able to make this block with flannel quite easily, as it's a woven fabric and fairly easy to sew with. I'm not sure why you would be having issues... My advice is to just be patient with it, always giving the fabric a good gentle press before cutting it and to remember that flannel is slightly thicker than a normal patchwork fabric as it has a slight 'pile' on it's surface (the fuzzy bit that you feel when you run your hand over the fabric) resulting in thicker seams and joins.
Hope this helps you out a little bit! x
Thank you I will try what you said!
