How do children learn words like "this" and "that"?

    This is the kind of thing that got me into linguistics. On one hand, literal babies all over the world learn languages. On the other hand after learning about linguistics, it seems impossible that a baby should be able to pick up the usage of the same syntax that a linguist could dedicate their entire career towards studying.

    Interesting, there isn't even a distance distinction in German between this or that. You'd even use the same word (das) in the context of pointing at two objects.

      Even "here" and "there" are not as different. You can always ask someone "bist du da?"(are you there?), if you want to know if the person is at the same place
